Then again, I may be missing out on some combat subtleties, such as perhaps switching to a heavier weapon or launcher that may make such runs unnecessary.
I think you could survive, with recalling, but you would need luck. As for combat subtleties, the big one in O is to get a weapon with big dice, as the second + (to deadliness) is a percentage of dice damage, and criticals give extra dice.

Why do you say that? Would they do more damage than an arrow from a well enchanted longbow?

For a sleeping monster with a good critical roll, surely yes. Otherwise, it may depend (especially for branded arrows).

The 'thancs are 'well-balanced' weapons, this adds an extra multiplier to the damage done by throwing them.

My current FA char (Bignose on the FA ladder) has recently found Nimloth which is a well-balanced 1d7 spear - he can throw it for over 400 damage on average against undead. With a branded, well-balanced 1d11 Storm Hammer you can do over 600HP (I once found a 1d21 randart Storm Hammer which could do crazy damage when thrown).

So I'm new to the forums and to the competitions. Given that I've never beaten M before and never had even a successful level 45+ character (outside of cheating) - what's the line on me winning in a truncated timeframe with a variant I've never played before?

See you on the competition ladder... hopefully

Your odds, about the same as mine, dismal. Doesn't mean you shouldn't try. And don't worry about the time frame, you've got plenty of time to kill off plenty of Harrys.

If you don't think you can win, then set yourself another goal, like reaching a clevel or dlevel higher than you've ever gone before or killing x number of uniques. The competitions are useful to force you to play races/classes/variants that you've never played before, which will overall probably increase your skill at playing the game.

Congratulations to the winners - I bow to your achievement.

This competition was never about winning for me - just trying something out I've never done before. I'd say it was fun - but I have to admit - it was pretty frustrating... in between bouts of fun...

                            Congratulations to the winners.

But I have a few question how you do to not use a lot of turns ?

Do you never rest ? Is there a trick, something to know ? Because, I played and win two levels and use a lot of turn and I didn't catch how to not use a lot of turns.

                            Any help ?

Me? DON'T waste 1000's of moves in town. Just a little rest, detect objects, pick your fights, stay deep, take a chance every now and then. But then again, I never won anything.

I have written some extensive playing notes in the past in rgra. They were not about O, but the general ideas should apply.
