Thanks everyone for your input. I am happy to report that Sauron is a dead sorcerer, although he unfortunately did not drop the One Ring.

    Complete N00b’s Journey: Part 5-13

After reading the replies, I decided that the tie goes to more preparation, so I dived back down to D:98 to get more Seeker Arrows. I dive down and kill Feagwath, the Undead Sorcerer, who drops the cloak ‘Colannon’ and also kill Scatha the Wurm and find the Wicker Shield of Elros in a vault. I then find two more scrolls of *Destruction*, deposit them back at the home, and dive down again, where I kill Osse, Herald of Ulmo and get to level 42 before going back up to Recall after find a scroll of Mass Destruction. I then get more Seeker Arrows from the Black Market and proceed to go down for a final dive to get more Seeker Arrows. This third dive gives me the Metal Cap of Thengel, which was useless at the point and dropped. I also kill Hourmurath of Dir, who drops an even better ring of Speed and the Great Hammer of Aule and proceed to kill Gorlim, Betrayer of Barahir and Arien, Maia of the Sun. I then get another supply of seeker arrows and recall for the last time to get the necessary items for Sauron. I switch to the Bastard sword of Eowyn to get dark and nether resistance, and switch to the necessary gear to dispose of Sauron once and for all, while buying a potion of Life from the Black Market for Morgoth. Having done all of this, I then proceed to D:99, where I quaff a found Potion of Experience and proceed to dig shooting corridors to abuse the line of sight rules. Sauron, the Sorcerer comes soon enough and dies to three rounds of corridor shooting with Seeker Arrows of Frost. After killing him, I get to level 43, and find that he didn’t drop any useful items. I descend to D:100, and immediately Recall to prepare for the final battle. While waiting for Recall, I end up trying to evade Morgoth by going through the winding corridors. Once back at the town, I pick up the arrows I have stashed at my home and get the items that I think are needed to slay the Black Foe of the World.

So Duntir’s status has once again been updated, and I welcome any tips to make sure this character is tip-top for Morgoth.

I don't think there is any particular reason why Sauron would drop the one ring --- maybe there is in some variants, but as far as I know in Vanilla his loot is just randomly-generated like every other unique, and there is no reason to expect anything in particular.

Apart from the odds being slightly higher on the 2nd highest unique there's nothing special about his drop. Congrats and good luck with Morgoth. You may want more ?banishment 1st. You don't absolutely need it but that'll help a fair deal.

You also might carry MB4 instead of speed potions. The spell lasts longer than the potion, and in any case it is much easier to replace lost books. The teleport other spell can be useful too.

Thank you so much for the input folks! I was aware that Sauron was not likely to drop the One Ring, but it would have been nice for some flavor issues! After some tense moments, I vanquish Morgoth and fulfill the second prophecy of Mandos!

Complete N00b's Journey: The YAVP and the Finale!

So I begin the final dive to Morgoth by recalling to D:100 and move to the top left corner of the map and cast Word of Destruction. The destruction misses a nightcrawler, who disenchants my Caestus before it succumbs to another Word of Destruction casting. Soon enough, Morgoth comes and I begin the first round of firing from my Seeker Arrows of Wounding before he summons the Tarrasque and Vecna, The Emperor Lich, prompting me to use a scroll of Teleportation to get the hell out of there. It took a while for me to learn the methods of avoiding LOS with Morgoth in the destructed zone, and I ended up wasting a lot of potions of speed before I could master it, but I was able through a series of Seeker arrow Volleys to get Morgoth to 50% HP before I am forced to teleport him away and retrieve my ammunition. In the second round of volleys, I get him down to one pip of health before the next teleport other and ammunition retrieve. While getting my ammunition, I am forced to evade the Witch-king of Angmar, Maeglin the Traitor of Gondolin, and Khamul the Black Easterling. After getting my ammunition, I use a scroll of *Destruction* to kill them and soon run into Morgoth for the last time. I then kill Morgoth with my precious Arrows of Wounding, get his Hammer 'Grond'€™, Iron Crown, and the plate mail of Celeborn that Morgoth also dropped, equip them for giggles, and formally end the part and celebrate my victory!

I have posted my final update to the ladder, and would once again like to thank EVERYONE for making this win possible after only five different tries! With this win, I am no longer a n00b to this game!

Anyway, it's time for me to move on to the last part of my roguelike tour of duty by going on to: Elona+! Farewell folks!

I knew it wouldn't take many games, man! Quite a few hours maybe, but not many games.

Congrats and best of luck beating Elona!!

Congrats! Be aware that angband has a lot of variants, some quite different (and harder!) from the original. Sil, FA, PosChengband and its offshoots are the ones I'd recommend for widest variety.
