Wow, this game is much more generous with wands of TO than my others. I have 5 now. But I have used a lot of charges, especially on that one "cube" vault. My damage has gone up considerably (around 220) despite not finding anymore good items (though I did find a RoD). Still diving. Think I may need to carry more than 40 !CLWs with me, though, or finding regen item would be nice. Nearly died when an Ethereal dragon breathed darkness on me. But I did find a staff of detect evil so that is very helpful. Keep getting breathed on by fire and lightning.

_Detect Evil is a store item that warriors pretty much need to purchase unless they get lucky with full detection or ESP. (Rods of light are a necessity too, for anyone playing with no ESP and bad HP.) Or are you playing ironman?

Or (c) stashing the vulnerable stuff on the floor, out of the line of fire, before a fight.

I am not playing ironman. I haven't seen _Detect Evil in the store. I dropped my 2 rods of light when I found a rod of illumination, but maybe losing the rods of light was a bad move. I also have 2 rods of mapping which is super helpful. I have a ring of escaping which is an item I am on the fence about having on most games. Kinda useful for TOing OOD monsters, but otherwise kinda useless once I have TO. I really need an item with some good stat boosts. I'm on DL49 and have 321HP.

This is super risky. I get burned doing this about 50% of the time. Meaning, the fight gets out of hand and I have to teleport away and I can never get back to the items. EDIT: Or worse, I can't teleport away because my staves of teleportation are stashed somewhere and I'm confused. But I guess I'm thinking more about times when dropping everything to take on a charge drainer rather than water hounds or colbrans.

I don't usually do it with easily replaceable stuff like _Teleport. It's for things like staves of speed or *Destruction*, and extra !Healing. (No need to risk a big stack against an ice wyrm.)

So I died raiding a vault and think I need to switch things up a bit so I am going Ironman with a High Elf Warrior. My starting gear will be 2 flasks of oil, 38 ?phase doors and a potion of cure light wounds. I am going to do my best to ignore the turn counter. Gonna take my sweet time.

My starting stats are +8 to CON, +6 to DEX and +6 to STR. Already found a dagger (+2, +2). Very nice. Didn't really want to be punching things for too long. Starting my @ looks like this:

                STR: 18/20
                INT: 18/11
                WIS: 18/7
                DEX: 18/30
                CON: 18/20

EDIT: I need to stop picking up the gold pieces....

Potion IDing is going along very nicely. Just ID'd saltwater and have 10 rations of food. Shoulda bought a torch, though, instead of flasks of oil, that was dumb. Light is more than half used up and no torches found yet. Not too big a deal since i'm only on DL4.

Lol, so my torch is at 94 turns left, so I take it off in lit rooms and just chased a soldier down an unlit hallway and he lit the hallway for me. 39 torch turns left and I find a torch in a lit room.

Found a short bow of power on DL5.

Well this is interesting, just picked up an artifact amulet on DL11 [(3-9) feeling] after reading an un ID'd ?DD. The only obvious things the amulet does is grant SI, sustain INT <+1> and grant [+4] AC. If it is causing the 9 feeling, it must have some key higher resists or an immunity. I haven't encountered any ID scrolls yet. EDIT: Hopefully I'll learn a lot of runes with this amulet. Learned pBlind from it so far. Nevermind, it's an amulet of the Magi.

Found a Heavy Xbow of the Nazgûl (+12, +19) on DL13. I guess I'll keep it as a swap. I do have 44 bolts.

EDIT: Man, I am struggling despite clearing every level. I don't get it. I guess no dive=no good items. The nazgul xbow is pretty boss but I rarely use it. But when I do, I squash 'em good!

A smattering of orcs. Where is their leader? Why the chaotic, rag-tag assortment?

Anyway, things aren't going as well as I thought they'd go. Was down to 6 phase doors, now I'm at 9. I had 3 scrolls of teleportation. Now I have 1 (but I haven't used any). I thought if I was exploring the levels more fully I'd be doing better on things like this. In my diving games I have more scrolls of teleportation than I do now. I've used up my wand of TO save for one charge. I dropped my amulet of rPois since I found a ring of cold immunity, <+3> DEX and rPois. But I can't take advantage of a ring of dam (+10) since I have a ring of speed <+6>. Despite the early find on the ring, I'm still struggling. It's a bit frustrating. I got chased around a level by a death quasit, forcing me to use 13 of my 18 _Teleportation charges. I guess this would be a good time to drop a stave to save on charges when I pick up another one.

I just found a cap of Telepathy (8-5) feeling level on DL34, where I had to teleport away relatively minor threats, so that's pretty huge since I have no other monster detection. The idea of playing slow is that I'm supposed to be bored at the depth I'm at, but instead I've been on my toes. Ever since I read that scroll of DD it's been a struggle. Basically, if I could find a decent weapon things would be going much better. Often it's more damaging for me to fire a bolt in melee range than to hit the thing with my weapon.... I found an amulet of the magi on DL11 and "Devotion on DL19. Somewhat useful for the pBlind/hLife+1 lite, but a good weapon would have been much better.

Since staves of ID have been removed, I would suggest scrolls of ID rarity be made less rare. I think I've found 4 or 5 scrolls the entire game.

At least I have a lot of !CCWs.

EDIT: @ started collecting good gear right after I posted the above text. @ looking much more promising now.

Why are scrolls of teleport level always in vaults? really annoying. I guess I should really stop reading UNID'd scrolls in vaults.

Holy cow, just found the Phial of Arkenstone (not it's actual name but even better than the Dwarven light): rPois, pBlind, hLife, +3STR, +4WIS, +2STEALTH. Funny, before I entered into battle will Ulfang the Black I had a feeling he was gonna drop something good.

                  EDIT:

Well this blows. Used my last charge of TO on a wall because I didn't realize the Arch-Lich was in the wall. So I tried to lure him out and self-teleport, and of course wounded up near the other things I had TO'd. So I teleport again and found myself in the village of the Vampire Lords.

This is a lousy situation. If I had TO'd the Arch Lich I would have been able to take the rest of the monsters in the vault. Now I will probably not make it back into the vault, and emptied my wand of TO for nothing (actually, I think the Arch-Lich may have drained the last couple charges). There are two vaults on this level, too. The first one commanded me to go away, which is how I discovered the one with the Arch-Lich in it.

EDIT: Well, I'm back near the Arch-Lich vault, but the Archlich is next to me. I could use one of my seven potions of speed and try to lure him away, but it's tricky because the Vampire Lord village is right above me and my only clear path. I could self teleport again, but I don't see what it will accomplish. I could try to kill the archlich with my seeker bolts and good xbow, but it would take awhile and the things he'd do during the onslaught are probably fairly nasty, and I will use up my precious phase doors (I have 13 of them now!).

Guess I'll read a scroll of teleport level.

With a character named "Ironfist", are you a Brent Weeks fan?

                      That's what they're for.
Guess I'll read a scroll of teleport level.

Mmm... I don't have TV so not sure who that is. I just like the expression "crush him with an iron fist!" And I ran out of ideas for Elven names.

Yay, started in a room with more Mûmaks.

Dread drops RoS <+9>. Found a scroll of ?DD but not sure I want to read it.

Man, artifacts are dropping like rain! Nothing amazing, but definitely some good stuff (I suddenly have pConf covered with two items).

I still have to make a decision between my two weapons; one grants +5 CON and the other +2 speed, though the +5 CON one has slightly better dam output. Prolly should lose the +2 speed one. (The two weapons are listed in the char dump above), but thanks to new gear, my +5CON weapon does 162 to others whereas the +2speed weapon does 149 to evil.

5 CON beats 2 speed, sure.

Yeah, especially since I upgraded my speed ring from 6 to 9. I have 3 rings of damage that I never wear. Because the +3 DEX of the Cold Immunity ring boosts blows significantly that the trade off isn't worth it. But I am reticent to drop them they are (+10). I did drop the other weapon.

Just found another artifact: X6 heavy xbow (+10, +15). This is significantly better than my nazgul bow, and no more robbing an inventory slot to keep unwielding the drainer xbow! Yay

Thanks for all the replies, Pete. I really appreciate it!

EDIT: The dragon *slay* on this weapon is soo useful. Evil dudes keep summoning dragons; it was a summoned Crystal Drake that dropped the artifact bow I just picked up. My high AC and high CON mean I can take on every dragon at this depth. Lovin' it! Just smote Smaug easy peasy. I thought I was a dead man when I ran out of TO charges, but I haven't need the TO since that run in with the Archlich.

EDIT: So I found a vault (7-6) level feeling on DL53. The only troublesome monsters in it are an eye druj and elder vampire. I should be able to take the elder vampire without *too* much trouble at +19 speed. Since this isn't a permanent vault, I can just activate my ring of digging into the wall to hockey stick the eye druj since he is against a wall of the vault. No TOing needed! (Hopefully the elder vampire won't summon an archlich ).

I have 40 !CCWs. Not too shabby. Phase doors are up to 15. The Eye Druj goes down with 6 bolts, 5 of those were (+6, +6) and the other was average. Elder Vampire didn't summon anything and crumpled before my Awl-Pike. Hey, I just realized. This is the first time I am wielding an Awl-Pike. I've always been under the understanding that awl-pikes are awful. I think this one has extra dice, though (3d8). I'm a bit giddy right now because I kind of expected the blunder with the archlich and losing all my TO charges was gonna mean curtains for my @, but he keeps finding good gear without needing to TO anything. Let's see how the rest of this vault goes, but somehow I don't think I will be undone by a pack of barrow wights.... I had actually made peace with probably needing to start of and was kind of looking forward to my second attempt, but maybe I won't have to now.

I think I will dive if I find a wand of TO. I already did just skip a couple levels, but seem to be very comfortable for the depth.

This is interesting: found another Phial (this one isn't quite as good as the one I have). But it doesn't have an icon; just a red *, but when I walk over it or wear it and drop it it remains a red * on the ground.

I have never been so happy to find 31 bolts (+0, +0), but any bolts right now are a blessing. This xbow takes no prisoners.

In the below image you can see where someone commanded me to go away. So I am going to activate my ring of digging and crush the perp with my super-ballistic bolts! To quote a Rogue-themed card from Hearthstone: He'll never know what hit him.

Just as I thought, a pink Q. But he is not where I was expecting him to be...

And a single bolt ends his silly life.

And inside is a Mace of Disruption (+15, +14) *slay evil* Grants Telepathy. What DL am I on? That is a 5, right? Not an 8? 53, yes, 53 is my dungeon level, not 83. So now all I need is to recall to town and put this puppy in my home until I can wield it. I got surprised by a silent watcher and lost a point of STR. As such, it does 311 to evil and 208 to others (better than my 197 with the dragon bane). It's also cursed. So I guess the question is do I lug it around until I find another remove curse scroll? Even without the curse, I'm not sure I'd wield it right now since the dragon bane is so useful right now. On the other hand, this could be an endgame weapon. Given how things are going, it seems unlikely I won't find another, but just because I'm on a streak of finding good gear doesn't mean my luck won't change.

I wonder if we did find a super good crossbow exactly the same time?

I just found mine; when did you find yours? I haven't visited your thread in a little bit.

There is also a scythe of slicing of lightning here that does 335 to non-rLightning; that's a far cry from the 197 of my current weapon. Man, I don't like these decisions! It's to-dam is only +8 but I guess it has a good brand.
