I kind of have a thing for classis games and Doom has been a favorite for a LONG time. I remember I used to have a fan variant that had all the sound effects and voices ripped straight from the movie The Untouchables so every time you fired the DB it was the sound Kevin Costner shooting that guy in the chair at the Canadian border. Even bought it on the xbox mp so I could play it on my console.

Pretty much! I think it would be super fun to make an Angband mod for doom, but it would be a serious undertaking. One of the things I really liked about doom was finding secret areas and treasures, but Doom has so few treasures that it doesn't really work that well. Nevertheless, finding secrets in episode 1 was still a blast.
So it wouldn't be turn based, it would be doom, but with all the items, monsters and traps of Angband. It would require some seriously sophisticated programming to have randomly generated levels for the Doom engine, though. You, uh, you guys do know about DoomRL, right? It's a Doom roguelike, and it's pretty awesome. Top-down and turn-based. There are level generators for the classic FPS Doom as well, but there's also so many fan-made levels that you can just play those instead and basically never run out, even if you enforce "permadeath" by never replaying a level even if you die.Comment

Yes, I have played Doom RL but I didn't get hooked on it like I did on Angband. I have made a lot of levels for doom. Used to love trying to make maps similar and as good as the originals but never managed to. I actually started a community mapping project called "Doom the Way Id Did". It was a fun challenge that's aim was to pretend that each episode of the original doom had a level that was lost and then to make the 'lost' maps as authentically as possible to be convincingly mistaken for original levels from the game, to recreate Doom the Way id Software Did.

It's always nice when you replace your cloak [1, +0] with a cloak of Fire Immunity.
Also nice when you have 2 rods of detection on DL33. ....YASD; didn't detect near the small vault when I was meaning to. Double blasted by a hand druj. It's okay, need to download the latest build anyway.
So diving quickly once again and on DL29 (5-6 feeling) receive a wand of TO from a Priest. This will be handy if I expect to get any well guarded treasures. Then I quaff an UnID'd potion and it's enlightenment. Just what I needed to see a vaulty like room with some treasures in it (5-6 feeling). So I check out some other treasures nearby first to give my HP some time to regenerate and I find an artifact cloak with good AC bonus (no idea what the cloak does, though). Then I go to another object nearby and it's an artifact shield, also good AC and <+4> STR and no idea what other powers it has. I don't even know if I want to bother with the vaulty room now. Seems like I should quit while I'm ahead! -- cleared the room (not sure why the 5 danger feeling; there was nothing significantly OOD in the vaulty room).
EDIT: I love when the dungeon is nice to me. Next level has amulet of Weaponmastery (3-7 level feeling).
EDIT: Oh happy Hippogriffs! Turns out the shield provides immunity to fire and the cloak resistance to Poison.

EDIT: Dear Colbrans and Ancient Blue dragons, Storm giants and energy vortices. I have lots of nice metal objects I'm hauling around with me. Feel free destroy a lovely wand of confuse monster! Or how about a wand of sleep monster? No? Then surely a wand of scare monster wants to conduct your most unwelcome bolts of lightning?
Problem with playing this game too much is I take greater and greater risks. Was trying to fight a basilisk and an elven druid in a square room at the same time. Elemental attacks don't work that way. They have a damage-dependent 1% to 3% chance of destroying any vulnerable item in your pack, independent of all other items. Charge draining attacks do work like that: any object capable of being drained is eligible, so empty wands and staffs give a chance of avoiding a successful drain.
Edit: against Colbrans, you can drop stuff on the floor beneath your feet to protect it. They only have a bolt attack, so floor items aren't affected. Well, this vault hasn't killed me yet. Still exploring it. Kinda sad I have to TO just about everything in it. I can't even take Ancient Dragons. Even Death Knights I TO'd.
Thanks for the tip about Colbrans. I never thought to do that.
So far I've found handgear of lightning immunity and a spear of wounding (+13, +19) (1d6), bringing my damage up to 153. But even so, I had to TO the Ancient Blue Dragon because his jaws and claws tear me to shreds. I found some decent bolts, but a master thief stole my xbow I was saving in case I found good bolts while I was on the downstairs to the level I am on now. I'm low on health so I can't really mess around trying to kill stuff right now, anyway. But glad I don't have to worry about my wands of TO getting destroyed any longer.
I only have one !Speed and I think I'm gonna have to quaff it before I activate my ring of digging to get into the heart of the vault. Hopefully there will be no drujes in it. That's what my last @ died to.
EDIT: Well, kind of disappointing. Found another artifact weapon but nothing good on it ([+36] AC, but no increase in DICE and no stat boosts). Also noticed the vault I'm in is shaped like a 3D cube. Now I have the annoying task of trying to Identify these staves and scrolls without Teleporting off the level or destructing. I've always assumed elemental attacks target all items at once and if there are any vulnerable items then there is a percentage chance for one or more being destroyed. But if I have 20 objects and only a few of them are vulnerable then why do so many items get destroyed? If I understand what you're saying, if I have 1 potion of CLW and 19 other objects, I'll have a 5% chance of the potion being destroyed if the elemental attack has a 100% chance of destroying any vulnerable items. If the elemental attack has a 4% chance of destroying vulnerable items, than the potion will actually be 20 times less likely to be destroyed (or have a 0.2% chance).
If I only had potions in my pack how many potions would Huan's frost breath destroy?

In any electric attack, each wand, ring, or amulet in your pack has a minimum 1% chance of breaking. Or at least it used to. Now it has a 1/2000 chance of breaking for each point of damage, up to a max of 3%. So very weak attacks have a minute chance, but elemental attacks of 60 dam or more have a 3% chance--basically any breath from a half strength or better Wyrm, even double resisted, will do this.Comment
