Extend haste only lasts 10 turns. Not worth it.

I was expecting the staff to get burned up was why I did that. Of course it doesn't when I use up all its charges. Sure coulda used those ?recharges on this vault level. But I am frustrated again as I realized that I left the balance armor on DL68. It saddens me to have to confront the fact that I am playing the wrong game. I have a hard enough time keeping track of my stuff irl, item management gets fatiguing.

I just ?phased instead of ?identifying the long sword in the center of that special room I mentioned in the post above (?phased out of the vault into the hallway below the vault; tengu summoned me to Ausse. I figure I am better off _Teleporting than TOing in that position. Took me to the special room. The Great Balance Wyrm I TO'd earlier was nearby and pursuing me as I went for the center of the room. Now I can't get back to the center without using a precious TO charge (I need to save them for the rest of the vault). Stupid blunder after stupid blunder. So frustrating. But leaving the balance armor behind really hurts. And I'm still moving around at +2 speed because I ditched Til-i-Arc and I stupidly didn't take Grima's boots with me.

EDIT: Note to self: When you move onto a potion that you already have, you still have to wait till your next turn to pick it up. bye bye !*Healing* (thanks vibration hounds).

Woops, the Terrasque had favorable Knights' move LOS on me when I drilled into his chamber, so I couldn't TO him. He breathed every turn, even after I just picked up RS <+9> and another _Speed for +21 temporary speed. Had to use 2 !*Healings and he destroyed another one (only one left). Amazing. He better have been guarding something good.

Well, it's always nice when the last thing you pick up in a vault is a =Power. My base speed is up to <+16>. Lot of good loot in this vault; "Ingwë, "Weaponmastery, wand of TO, rod of TO, 2!AUG, RoS <+9>, no boots of speed, though.

EDIT: Gah, I let go of "Evenstar thinking I'd want to wear "Weaponmastery, but found a (Preservation with rPois so dropped =Barahir, and switched to [Rohirrim to don a crown of might. All "Weaponmastery is doing for me right now is (+2,+3). I could wear Hithlomir, but I remember now that its low AC is annoying. "Evenstar would be perfect. Stupid me. At least this blade of Chaos is doing 500+ to evil and 624 to demons and undead.

I recommend playing slower, and less. You're going to burn out at the rate you play. Also mix it up some. Try Sil. Or FA.

Alternatively look back at the challenges Ingwe and MattB subjected themselves to. If you're looking for an "ultimate" challenge, maybe artifactless fists only.

I wanted to do the current PosChengband competition but don't have my Desktop computer setup now (only using my Mac these days) and didn't find a Mac version for it. I did try FA, but found it less compelling than Angband for some reason. If I recall correctly, I think I found the wilderness levels a bit tedious (which I think was most of them).

I have tried Sil a few times but found the learning curve rather steep compared to Angband (maybe I should ask: when starting out, what's the HT Warrior equivalent in Sil?). I usually die much sooner in that than in Angband, but I have heard good things about it.

I think trying without artifacts could be fun. I enjoy bashing things too much with powerful weapons to want to try fists only, though. I'm not sure I am in need of more challenge, though. Right now I am playing High Elf Warrior which is in my experience one of the easiest combos (at least for my preferred play style) and I quite enjoy it. It's also fun to dive fast and hope you have what you need by the time you are forced to face Sauron.

I guess I am still enjoying Angband quite a bit because there is so much content. I like that the game is now quite familiar and I am gaining a certain amount of mastery, while enjoying how things can still unfold in surprising ways.

I will have to do the nightlies on my next run. I keep forgetting to try it for some reason.

Noldor with 3 con, good str/dex and dump all your exp into melee and evasion to start.
Make sure to not get too distracted by abilities, you need good skills too or you won't be able to hit your rolls.

Thanks for the tips Pete Mack and Patashu.

Doesn't look like I'm gonna beat 40k turns, but my prospects look good going into the Sauron fight (though I wish this @ was a ranger, those {Holy Mights and {Wounding!) This battleground looks significantly better than other areas I've fought him in the past. I'll get some {Holy Mights in before he even sees me. As far as my setup, went with damage over more CON and resistances (a slightly different setup would have me wearing "Trickery, Elros and the cap Celembrimbor which gives me all resistances, save pStun and pBlind, and nearly 1000HP).

Éowyn was a nice find on DL98 to help bring me to CL42 easily just now by taking out Sauron's escort and his escort's summons, but I will be smiting Sauron with the {ego} BoC I found on DL68 as it does more dam to evil (592 before !Heroism, which I brought along for the fight this time) than Eowyn. Late game _Teleportation has been very good as well. Gets me around the level quickly, though sometimes it wastes time and moves (you know, when I lose 300hp when I land) and it doesn't take me where I need to go on repeated tries. Nevertheless, my experience is _Teleportation is worth the risks in the late game once you have your speed and CON up to respectable levels.

Taking a break was a big help. You rest. You feel your head clear.
I, like, didn't forget anything going into the final fight this time.

So that went very well. Only used 1 *Healing and 1 !Healing (and a couple _Healing after Sauron reminded me that he heals himself from my charges). So I ?phased next to a little cubby and stashed my _Teleportations and used up all the charges on my other staves and dropped my wands of TO. His health went down quickly between {Holy Might and melee. I had him almost dead but was below 595HP myself so I healed and he summoned and I ?Phased, TO'd Huan, and then Ar-Pharazon commanded me to the other side of the level. Not wanting Sauron to regenerate his health, I deliberated a few moments before using a precious ?Teleportation and landed right back in front of Ar-Pharazon. I TO'd him. My limited TO ability (3 rods) meant I had to ?phase around the fighting area until I went up into the safety of the passages. More {Holy mights, short work of some "lesser" summons (Nightcrawler, Death Drake) and then Sauron fell, after which it was just a matter of cleaning up his summons (Major Demons) and carefully remove some Es as quickly as possible lest they destroy my precious {Holy Mights.

Not sure if I will fight Morgoth with less than 900HP. May revise my equipment strategy before fighting him. I still don't know how to kill him at range since I have a limited supply of ?phase and ?phase is also a crucial part to mitigating limited TO. I have a feeling I won't do much ranged combat on him unless some favorable knight's move diagonal hallway setup presents itself.

                (§)(§)(§)

So I guess I needed to take a longer break before starting on the final fight. Forgot temporary speed! Luckily I found two rods of speed and two !speed in the dungeon and a !Life and !*Healing* and a few !Experiences.

Polyphemous came back after I TO'd him before he could leave his spot behind a bunch of other monsters I had to kill to get to him. I was so happy to remove him from the vault before he could do any destruction and then sometime later while I'm clearing the vault I get hit by his acid bolt which destroyed like 8 objects in my inventory, but he already squashed a bunch of objects when he came back into the vault. So far this 8 feeling DL100 hasn't produced anything notable at all, and he probably destroyed whatever was notable. Kronos also picked up the ring of speed I was hoping to get in another smaller vault. I don't think it's worth fighting him when I have limited heals.

Then Charcharoth comes back into the vault to breathe on me and I try to TO him but he remains, and he breathes again. I try TOing again and he remains, and he breathes again. Then I realize the TOs weren't failing, I just didn't have a LOS to him. Time to go skiing (southern New England getting hammered again) and return to this tonight.

Use Elros and an amulet of weaponmastery. That'll give you plenty of HP.

I stupidly declined to take a dwarven multitude DSM; I could use "Trickery and Elros but want to max my dam. Hoping I'll find a better crown of might.

I mentioned Weaponmastery because it has rDis. Crown of might are pretty rare. Unlikely to find one quickly while scumming dl 100.

I probably overlook something but if you switch to Elros you just lose rdis and nothing else, don't you? But you would gain rshards, pconf and +4 CON which would max your HP if i see correctly.
You also write "I have a limited supply of ?phase and ?phase is also a crucial part to mitigating limited TO" - do you use Belegennon's activation (phase every 7 turns)? I often forget such things.

I actually considered forgoing rPois since getting hit by a big poison breath while attacking Morgoth doesn't happen that often. I think that may have been better than fighting him with ~850HP.

Well, it's been an exciting fight so far. Even though I have {Bard and {Holy Mights shooting him at range was very slow to do damage, but he never blasted me while I was hitting him. He'd heal up when I'd teleport away and return to get the arrows. I did this a couple times, and I managed to whittle only ** from his life bar due to him regenerating. So finally I decided to switch to melee and so I ditched my staves and wands and relied on my consumables, 2 rods of speed and 4 rods of TO. At times I couldn't TO so I'd have to ?phase and run. But I caught a break (or series of breaks) during melee when Morgoth would Earthquake, and I'd be isolated a moment to use !CCW instead of precious !*Healings (!Healings used up pretty quick). I also would ?phase away from the summons into little isolated cubby holes, !CCW while he'd approach again. I actually got him down to * red health bar. Looked like he was gonna fall, when more summons including a Black Reaver who was right up against me. So I ?phased, but phased into a bunch of greater dragons. so I ?phased again. I'm worried he is going to regen too much for me to finish him without dying. We'll see!

I probably also should have risked being double shotted and used the ring of damage. I'm gonna switch to ring of damage for the final blows to him. Now it's up to good fortunes to deliver me.

There are arrows of holy might nearby. I could try to grab them and finish him at range. There are also 7 !CCW in two separate stacks in the greater vault.

Jeez, maybe I should try to setup a favorable hockey stick to blast him with the last of the {holy mights. There are 8 arrows left, doing about 340 dam each.

I considered wearing Belegennon for the extra phases and in retrospect I wish I had gone this route--well, *almost* wish I had: The Preservation shield is also granting me rPois. I could have ditched (Preservation, and worn Elros and Belegennon. The reason I didn't do this is because I drop from 5.8 to 5.2 rounds since the DEX and STR from [Rohirrim provided <+2> of each. What I *should* have done is realized that the Dwarven Multihued DSM would have allowed me to have max HP, rPois, rDis (with "Weaponmastery) and I'm pretty sure max blows with the BoC if I swapped out {Bard for the Lorien bow I had at home just in case I would need it to get max blows from the extra <+4> DEX it provided. And yet, somehow I didn't put this all together and left the Dwarven dragon armor in the dungeon. Curses!

I win! By the skin of my I know not what. Another thing I realize, I should have swapped out =Narya for =Damage! (+15). That is another big blunder. I had +30 speed with =Damage vs +35 with Narya. /sigh, though Narya was also granting me precious HP.

Well, I won, which is the main thing. Very exciting to win such a close battle! I thought the dong sound when M finally gave up the ghost was him summoning more Greater Dragons or Black Reavers (he sure is fond of them).

                              http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=20315 42,701 turns.

I decided not to wait for him to return to me (which probably would have been better than teleporting away) and that I'd use my last ?Teleport and hope to land near the HM arrows and maybe grab the !CCW as well. But ?Teleport brought me all the way across the level near the lesser vault. I was faced with a Horned reaper and figured, oh what the hell, maybe he'll give me some !healings. Well, he took what little health I had left (brought me down to a little over 200) and dropped me only useless gear. So I ventured into the lesser vault and killed some things in hope for something useful and got two more !speeds, but no healing. Killed some medium Undead who did no damage to me at all but dropped also nothing. To'd M one more time after getting in a couple pot {shots from a favorable knight's move and then I guess I decided my situation wasn't going to get any better and after another arrow (seeker, +12) I swapped out Narya for =Damage and hoped to finish him. He summoned a couple times in the last few frames of battle, which I guess was a blessing as other things he could have done would have quickly ended me. So I ?MBanished and continued to smite him. He sneered and he scowled and then he died.

BTW, I didn't use any *destructions. All the destructed areas are from him whacking away at me. Now on to the latest Nightlies!

Nicely done! I'd still go without rPois, but more HP. Doing without ESP is more dangerous. One time where mushrooms of ESP or !rPois would actually pay off.
