I quaff a dropped !Heroism and then proceed to miss the displacer beast three times in a row with my bow of accuracy (+18, +8). I think that pretty much concludes my troubles with the Basilisk was a 'fluke' earlier and nothing more. Although, what is the to-hit on !heroism? I should probably know by now the differences between !Heroism, ?blessing/chant/prayer, and Berserk.
Wow, Aglarang is great against a Master Lich! Was hoping he wasn't gonna notice me walk by him, but he did, but I picked up another ring of damage right before he showed up, so I swapped the =rPois, hit him with a couple {flame, and then whomped on him with Aglarang. Thanks to Aglarang's Sustain DEX, just got myself some easy XP. He didn't even exp drain me or staff drain me. Amazing. Can't say I mind unintelligent monsters (pretty sure he was trying to drain my DEX).
@ said "aww" when I just ID'd a heavy xbow of power (+23). I'm like. Woohooo!!!!!
EDIT: Interesting unfolding of events. It's always the young dragons, I swear. Had teleported across a level and on the other side I get 4-8 feeling. Now I can tell there are no vaults cause I detected on both sides of the level. Ahh, crap, probably a stupid book. But I have found insane weapons lying on the floor at lower depths, so I say, what the hey, it can't be a book *every* time, right? Well, yeah, it Tensers. So I could have aborted mission as soon as I saw Tensers, especially since it and I were sharing space with a sleeping Drolem. But I'm thinking I can take the drolem since I have an =rPois and doing decent damage. I came all this way, I wanna see what the other red * are. Drolem gives me problems. For one, I forgot to look at his AC. If I had, I'm pretty sure I would not have fought him; and I'd either TO or Teleport myself and find the nearest >. Anwyay, I was forced to use both !heal. And then very riskally used a !CCW instead of a !*heal when he brought me to 105 and himself at just over half health. (I'm thinking at half health he is breathing for around 150). At least I didn't ?phase around the room, and ended up in other rooms. So eventually I kill him, thanks to a fat stack of !CLW. There were also a bunch of young white dragons in the room. What does one of them care to drop me? Nothing less than boots of speed <+10>. Got my 8 feeling item anyway.
Now, I know it's said level feeling doesn't affect drops, but I often get really good drops on levels with good feelings. In addition to the super boots, I just got chaos Elvenkind armor, !STR and !DEX from killing like 5 monsters.Last edited by Grotug; February 3, 2017, 19:51.Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM

Just found Gorlim. At 6.8 blows a round and poor stealth it's tempting to wear it. I actually had a situation once, where my searching was so bad wearing Gorlim I actually couldn't search: "You can't make out your surroundings" or something like that whenever I'd try to search for a door. There is a ?*Enchant Armor in the black market I was considering buying in the event I find a good cursed item, but figured it wasn't likely I would so I didn't buy it. Might still be there, tho.
EDIT: And the curse is broken! I think I'll save it for later, though. Not sure I want aggravation without Telepathy, Detection or any high resists right now.
Jeez, Gorlim doesn't mess around. Every other turn casting a bolt of raw magic and incanting terribly!Last edited by Grotug; February 3, 2017, 21:12.Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM

Crash dove to DL80 and found more stat potions than I normally do when crash diving. Found a MoD of Westernesse (+13) in a hallway on the way down, too (on DL59), but I'm saving it for later. Just found power ring of iFire in a vault, as well as a +5 DEX Lorien longbow (+20). My only source of ESP is an amulet, but I want to wear Ingwë so that I can wear Thorin (and pConf isn't bad either). Ingwë grants rE,rA,rC and Narya provides rF. But for now will wear rDisenchant Elvenkind armor waiting at home and Thorin. Crown of Might also adding another +3 CON (I'm only CL36 so even though I'm High Elf Warrior, I need CON! Only source of rPois is still a ring which is annoying, but my base speed without the ring of speed is still +21, which is all you ever really need. I'm getting 7.0 blows with Aglarang so will be swapping +DAM (+12) with =rPois for easier XP acquisition when necessary and safe to do so (ie. after -Detecting [I have one rod]).
Oh, snap, so the elven cloak of Aman I also just picked up has rDisenchant, which means I am going to be wearing the rPois elvenkind Robe I bought in the armorer on the offchance I might need it? HMMM. Gotta do it to free up a ring slot for =DAM. With the Thorin/Robe setup, my important resist holes are Nether, Nexus, Dark, Shards. "Trickery will be very welcome. This will probably be yet another game I go without rNether. Thorin will probably be preferable to rNether of Elvenkind. Not sure if it's worth bringing Thalkettoth back home with me. Will post a dump after I ?recall back home in a bit.
It always amazes me, when after crash diving, that I am able to kill so many things, so deep. The heavy xbow (+23) has been huge in softening up (removing 60% of their health is more like it) heavy breathers since I picked up a lot of good (high teens branded) ammos on the way. But even the slay evil (+8) bolts take down greater dragons with ease. Good thing I also saved some good bow ammo (including acid arrows) to use with this Lorien bow. I hope Sauron will enjoy it as much as me; maybe I'll save the acid arrows for him.
High Elf Warrior: am I a ranger? Am I a warrior? I'm both! thanks to native +80 shooting and +80 meleeing. Another reason why I like the High Elf Warrior combo over the HT Warrior; better shooting.
Also, I killed Q unique in a vault cubby. I wasn't sure if he was gonna summon on the other side of me, so I tried to TO him, but failed. An example of my good luck--this happens often, actually: He summons a pink W, I kill it, with lots of energy to spare before his next summons. I figured, I'm not gonna risk stepping next to him if he can summon on the other side of me. So I TO, but it fails. He summons a louse. I take that as a sign to risk it, so I step next to him and he doesn't summon anymore.
The only thing I don't like about forced descent is I can't play DL99 over and over again if I need to. Once I enter DL99 I *have* to kill Sauron before returning to town. It means I can't crash dive all the way to DL98, which would be nice.
Well, hello there Amrorer. Yes, I would like to purchase those gauntlets of power (+5, +5) <+3> for 9500 gold. With the new gauntlets and Lorien bow this brings the MoD to max blows of 5.2 if I continue to wear the Dwarven Chaos dragon armor. Man, 728 to undead. Too bad this mace doesn't slay evil. Will keep wearing Aglarang for now, though, and the AC debilitating rPois elvenkind robe. Dump coming real soon.

I kept TOing Maeglin and he kept coming back; I'm like; I'm not gonna have enough TO charges to explore this vault and keep TOing him. I did just pick up a staff of healing and brought with me a ?Recharge (and picked up another); I'll risk it. He didn't summon a single thing. I used up my staff of healing, and successfully recharged it to 3 again. I also happened to have perfect hockey stick location so that when he fleed through the pit of Undead I was fighting him at the top of at the end of our battle, he couldn't see me on his way back to me through the Undead pit to me, 'cause it's usually when he is fleeing and returning that he summons half of the most terrible things in the entire game. So I just stood my ground and went toe to toe with the Elder vampire and the vampire lords. #feelsgoodman.
Now Ar-Pharazon is returning. Maeglin's diagonal tunneling will make this an advantageous fight; let the Ancient dragons and what not fill the corridor while I stay out of LOS and whomp on him. Let's see if it works....
Very unexciting; he didn't summon anything, he didn't teleport me or himself, but he did bring me to 255hp from 638.
EDIT:
So I found two more ?DD and read all three, taking me to DL97. I recalled back home and I just realized, if I bring ?*destructions with me on DL99 and feel I am not ready to fight Sauron, I can destruct him, recall and get a new level to find whatever it is I need for the fight. My health is a little low so I'm hoping when I enter DL98 I'll gain another CL and maybe find some more !CON/!AUG.
DL98 was a small labrynth level with nothing on it but good pathfinding by Charcharoth. Ahh, but DL99 plays nice. Sauron above the medium small oval vault, Witchking come down to be TO'd and then I find a power dragon scale mail thank you very much; in what is an unprotected vault save for the Time Hounds I ?Banished, with my only scroll only to immediately pick up and ID a _Banishment. PDSM slight upgrade from Green dragon scale mail. Now i just need "trickery so I can actually, like, fight Sauron. I don't think you can take Sauron without rNexus can you? HMMMmm.. PDSM does not provide rNexus.
The little vault that could: Sling of Buckland <+2, +2, +4> (+20, +25). That's almost identical to the best sling I found couple weeks ago. Too bad I have over 100 arrows and no sling ammo.
Haha! This is working out famously! So I decided maybe the Witchking will give me "Trickery. Well, as he is wont to do, he summoned all sorts of nice things for me to kill. One of which is Dwar, Dog of war. He drops 24 Mithril Arrows of Holy Might, (+21, +17). This time I am not saving them for Morgoth. If I find rNexus on this level, Sauron is gonna go down at range. I used a staff of Earthquakes to sculpt the playing field to fight the Witchking and his friends. That also worked out well. So no rNexus yet, but gained a couple levels using !Restore: when the Unique Undead is fleeing I quaff and then finish him with PDSM Activation.
Still amazed at how quickly @ can get so powerful. CL39 37k turns.Last edited by Grotug; February 4, 2017, 18:44.Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM

I need to dump some arrows; I hate dumping {excellent} arrows but I have inventory issues.
EDIT: I don't mind using up *destructions to reset DL99 rather than having them for the final fight. I rarely use *destruction when fighting Morgoth anyway.Last edited by Grotug; February 4, 2017, 19:19.Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM

Wait a minute.... how can Sauron Teleport me off the level if I can't even teleport myself off the level? Aren't I thus immune to his Nexus?Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM

Heh, but Sauron can't teleport me off the level therefore I don't need rNexus to fight him, right?
Kamul the Easterling Commands you to go far away. You feel unstable for a second, but the feeling the passes.
Sauron is mine.
Kamul dropped Nenya, immunity Cold ring. This sort of bodes well for ranged attack of Sauron. Wish I had a better bow.
~~~~~~~~~
Well that was close as beans.
So I discovered 3/4 through the fight I had left my ?Recharging at home. The only way I was gonna have a remote chance against Sauron is if I could recharge my staff of healing and wand of TO a few times. The last phase of the fight: he had just blasted me 3 times with mana storms, so I drank 3 times in a row my last 3 !*healing, (I only had 4 at the start of the fight). Some more lesser blasts and I use up my last !healing. I was out of {Holy Might and using {Evil (+9), but the RNG at last plays fair: 3 consecutive arrows hit doing good damage, at least one of them a critical hit, 5*, 4*, 3* goes his health. At that point I'm down to only !CCW. I look again at his description to find out why I am getting blasted so often. More than half his spells blast me with something and he casts spells 1 out of 2 times. So I decided I don't have enough healing to to continue ranged fight. I drop all my staves, _banish a beige L, since my wands of TO are out, and, in hockey stick position, get in the arrow, and then begin to melee. He casts another minor blast and we are going toe to toe with me at 533 health. I don't bother trying to heal since my !CCW will only take me to 593 anyway. He melees with me for a bit and then another minor blast. 293 my health. I keep whacking at him, he's at 2* now. He summons some friends, a beholder, a death kniht and some other things that didn't seem much worrysome. I continue whacking away at him. I probably should have swapped the fire ring for damage, but in the stress of the moment I didn't think of it. Then Sauron gets in some good hits and I'm down to 83 health. He is down to one red * but I am going to have to ?phase here. So I get lucky on the ?phase, up in a corridor and am able to heal up a little. Again I get into favorable knight's position. I activate PDSM and it blasts him. He's still coming, though, and moves next to me. I whack away in melee for one last desperate push. A magical staircase appears.
I was aware of "Carlammas on the level the whole time. That would have been better than "IngwëLast edited by Grotug; February 4, 2017, 21:10.Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM
Morgoth is in a vault with an MoD. I am going to have to kindly ask him to leave. I still have 16 {holy mights after Sauron. Brought buckland with me in case I pick up any shots. Even the (+7, +7) shots do 438 a round.
Well, that didn't work. Forgot to bring ?phase doors and so I destructed Morgoth and then went back to the vault to grab the best "Trickery I've seen and then went to read ?Recall and nothing happens.
I started up a new @. Need to get better about the flakiness. Silly losing the game to forgetting to bring essentials to the fight.
Having 86 AC on DL16 sure is nice. But that Brigand, tho.
Good thing I have a wand and a staff of light just bought from the store. And I also just bought a _Detect Evil (I never do that).
Not that I needed it:
...
... Umm...what?
Well, I guess this answers a question I've been wondering about for awhile now: do items under rubble affect LF? Apparently not!
~~~
I want in!
Searching in the dead end above does not yield anything.
You can see where I successfully ?phased up (first try) from the central most room with two brown traps, into a new area above, and then marched west towards the vault. On the way over I conveniently picked up a ring of digging <+5> and a heavier frost branded ball and chain (+6, +7) than the Rapier I was wielding (+6, +2).
I already ID'd by quaff a potion of healing on DL10. Now I find two more. Also in the four compartment vault are an {excellent} shield and {excellent} boots and =Electricity. Almost guaranteed the boots are FrAct. The shield is likely Resistance due to the depth (DL24) and the enchantment bonus [+11], which is good since I left rings of fire/cold behind in order to hold onto {worn} rings in hope of possible FrAct. We don't want good fortune @ to die early! The question now is do I ?Recall home and ID the boots or do I drop all the {worn} rings, and keep adventuring? I'm kinda tempted to do the latter, but it would be such a shame to lose early fortune @ to YASD. I could try to test out the boots on an illusionist. I still have the staff of detect evil. I think I will do the Ironman thing here and chuck the {worn} rings and keep going! Never too soon to start training for my eventual ironman attempt.
Whoah, just noticed Thengel I've been wearing since DL13 courtesy of Grishnákh provides pConf! (I was a little surprised the Umber Hulk earlier didn't confuse me).
Oh, good, the next level is 3-9. If it isn't a book I think I'll faint. I'm dubious that a rod of recall would give such a high feeling at this depth. Also not sure I want a rod of recall. Sometimes if I really want to bring something back home I can read my last ?Recall and grab the item. The boots are FrAct and the shield is Resistance.
Lol, this is really turning out to be the game of RNGesus. So I kept exploring the 3-9 level (DL25) and finally found an undead pit. After clearing it, didn't find any interesting items, but at least no books. But of course I held onto the potions to bring back to get ID'd. Bought 4 staves of ID (averaging almost 19 per staff!)
Hi. Today we bring you DL45 on DL25 without any of the nasty monsters. Enjoy!
EDIT: Found a small permanent vault on DL31. Detect evil, gorgon. TO. It occurs to me Gorgon might not be the only thing giving danger level. I'm clearing the rest from hockey stick at the corner of a hallway when suddenly I'm face to face with a drolem. Of course TO fails. And of course--no, not this time. He merely claws and bites. TO works the second time.
~~~~~~
Can't decide if it's worth keeping shrooms of terror. They can be handy if I'm TOing something very scary? Can be handy if I decide to blast a unique from a far with !speed, <+7> base speed and Terror for +27 temporary speed? Not sure if these unusual and conditional circumstances warrant an inventory slot. I just picked up a heavy xbow (magical) and an elven cloak.
~~~~
So I'm screwing around with Gondricam (175 total AC) and I start whomping on Lokkak. Usually when I fight Lokkak he destroys me if I don't have a good weapon. But he can't hit me. It's pretty funny. It's like fighting farmer maggot at the very beginning of the game without a weapon. Then a berserker comes along and crushes Lokkak. It seems to me that non unique monsters shouldn't be able to crush unique monsters....
§§§ §§§ §§§
Well, I killed off that character *VERY* stupidly. I stood next to a lesser titan to grab an unID'd amulet. I figured I had enough health and speed to survive a round of him whomping on me while I grab the amulet, but by the end of his turn I was at -10 health. This was the most unnecessary death I've had at that depth in some time, and I really shouldn't be making these sort of stubborn, hair-brained moves. Basically I'm playing Angband too much, and just getting super careless.
But I am having fun with my new @. On DL8 Bullroarer dropped me the Phial, just like days of old (so I'm told). Now, on DL30, I see another bright yellow ~. I sorta sigh; I don't want a Star. I like the Phial. Then a voice whispers inside my head: "Child, here is no star...." Can you say Thráin? What a pleasant surprise. So I quaff a !Speed since I'm low on health, don't have FrAct and I see some paralyzing ghouls in the the monster packed vault, granted from â?€Second Sight. Inside the vault one of the first items I pick up is "Inertia. Quite happy to take the -2 to speed since I'm being granted +2 speed by Til-i-arc. Thráin reveals the ghoulz to be walled off in the last diagonal compartment of the vault, guarding nothing.
But I don't get why this magnificent object only produces a level 7 feeling at this depth?? Thráin is *easily* a 9 object, especially when you consider its native depth is something like 4000'. And then you consider all the ho hum items I've gotten at similar depth with deeper feelings (sans books). I've been considering playing without level feelings as others have suggested. Maybe I really ought to.
There were quite a few other good items in that vault, too: including a Cloak of Aman rChaos and full resistance [40, +20] armor. One of the rare "very good treasures here" levels that actually had very good treasures.
Holy Hofstadter! So the last item I picked up and ID'd on that vault was a wand of TO. Very next level is 9-6. Thráin shows the way to the checkered special room. I eat mush-of-Second Sight, quaff !Speed, TO away Radagast the Brown, =Digging activation to quickly get to Great Swamp Wyrm and TO him away while he's still sleeping. "Evenstar, {Bard. TYVM 6 feeling! Once again, these are some low numbers for some fine treasures for the depth!
EDIT:
Man, this game is going swimingly! Keep getting stat potions (I've drank 3 or 4 !Augs). Thrain is amazing. Keep finding vaults. Get to beeline to them. Current one's feeling is 7 and has Cambeleg, and Scatha just dropped a better Aman rChaos cloak than the one I was wearing: a <+1> more to speed and stealth over the last cloak. I love straight upgrades , they're so rare. Cambeleg is almost a straight upgrade to Cammithrim, but it doesn't have sCON.
More 7 feeling levels; skipped the last one without exploring it since it didn't have a vault, but the one I'm on now is permanent walls labrynth with Andúril. My DEX is maxed, my STR is *** I'm doing 465 to evil and over 500 to a whole lot of others. I'm on DL56, all resistances except pBlind, rSound and pStun. It's very strange being this powerful this quickly. Although switching from Til-i-arc to Andúril drops my speed from +4 to +2.
Forgot that Evenstar sustains CON; so I have bodykeeping with Andúril.

I also found boots of Wormtongue and there is an ?*Enchant Armor in the Undead pit.
I just realized I blew it on that vault. I have a ?*Destruction* I could have read from a position that would have destroyed the Greater Titan and Arian and the Elemental who were all in the lower right corner of the main compartment on the left side of the vault. /sigh
The cyan Liches kept returning and I was out of TO so I left the level, leaving behind wormtongue boots. In the blackmarket when I got home was a ?*Echant armor*. I returned to the dungeon, but after experimenting with different gear forgot to bring ESP helm with me. Find a vault on opposite end of level, so I teleport near it, and there is a Hydra pit between me and the vault. I try to ?phase around it but they are after me breathing fire, and fire, and more fire, and destroy one of my staves of speed. Frustrated, I decided to start a new @ with randarts.Last edited by Grotug; February 10, 2017, 14:21.Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM

So I didn't respect a brown c (probably a stegocentipede) and died an unecessary, early death. Just now I decided to reload the other game. So I got some good luck. First, I decided I'm probably gonna have to take down this Hydra pit since I can't rely on ?phasing by it without having the whole nest pursue me. So I ?phased a couple times and ended up in a room right below the nest. I healed up, used up the last couple charges on my remaining _Speed, ?recharged it, used the 3 charges immediately; ?recharged it, used the 3 charges immediately. ?Phased again, and was lucky to land in the hallway between the nest and the vault entrance! I can see upon using -Detection that only 3 Hydras are pursuing me, and one of them is almost dead. So I {kill the first one, TO the second and get hit by fire (bye bye more {slay evil) before TOing the third (I didn't want to wait for him, because there is a line of things in the vault I want to TO before they wake up, namely Ar-Pharazon the object picker-upper).
The other really lucky thing is this vault has no object destroyers and the one guy who picks up objects I just TO'd while he was still asleep (as well as those other big hitters in the line). Time to =Digging activation into Longthorin and then sit back and relax as I collect the loot.
Extend haste my left foot! Right after TOing Mr. White Fire, I already slowed down! It's been like 40 turns! *Shakes fist at false advertising on temporary speed item descriptions).
Picked up a Balance Dragon of Craftmanship. Not bad. I guess such an item warrants a 9 treasure feeling on DL69? Found a good AC Steel helm of Telepathy, too. My AC is good, my resistances are good, and my speed is +2. :-/ Found a ?DD and =CON <+6> as well.
I ?DD and stepped into the nearby trapdoor bringing me down to DL75:
To the west of the vault is this special room; I've never seen this before:
I wonder if this is some kind of "super" special room and has a higher chance of having something of value?Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM
