WTF just happened? Or rather what did I do wrong?

    WTF just happened? Or rather what did I do wrong?

    Okay so I'm confident that my Mage is ready to kick Morgoths ass all over lvl 100. Only it doesn't quite go down like that. So I get to lvl 100 and I *destruct* a couple of areas until Morgoth shows up. I fire a few arrows of slay evil..and about 1 out of 5 hits. So then I think if I let him get closer and use a RoP then I can fire at close range and hit him more often. Long story short this doesn't work out either. Once he brakes the RoP he hits me and usually drains a charge from one of my staves. At this point I read a phase door heal, recharge and cast a RoP. All through this I'm pretty much ignoring his summons and trying to hit him with arrows and bolts. However he drained my stave of the Magi and I didn't have enough mana to rechage it...so I teleported him away and fled the scene without even collecting my ammo since I was surrounded by dangerous monsters and couldn't banish them.

    Here is my dump right before I got ready to attack Morgoth. THe only thing that is different is that I loaded up all my slay evils& holy mights I also left the extra helm behind since I won't need res shards or disenchantment.

    What would you have done?

    It wasn't clear what you took from your post, but those rods were must-carry items. If you did not carry them, you should have.

    You ran out of mana. That should never happen. With all those staves you have essentially unlimited mana and healing. You could easily have maintained a buffer of 100 mana, restoring it whenever it was below 100 and Morgoth not in LOS. If necessary, phase to get out of LOS to recharge.

    Playing a mage, do not ignore the summons. Banish them. There's no reason not to. You should never flee the area.

    When M drains charges, he heals himself. With a low-damage attack, you don't want that to happen. Short of a MoD with slay evil or equivalent artifact, you are unlikely to do much damage with a mage. Don't let him hit you except when you need an earthquake effect to break LOS again.

    Figure out how much damage you were doing, counting hit percentage. All of the people arguing in other threads that mages need to be penalized with bows and swords seem incognizant of the massive hit differences from p_class.txt. I assume you would have done more damage with rift, and more than that with mana storm.

    If you plan to use attacks other than spells, you should have saved all !berserk all game at home. You should also buy out the temple a few times for enough !hero and ?chant to cast in town to cover the fight.

      The reason I didn't banish much was that I was afraid of getting below 650 hps. But I think that I should have been rifting M. I just had the idea in my head that I'd be hitting M with my arrows more often. Oh well, live and learn I guess. Thanks for the advice.

        Admittedly, everyone does things in their own way. But for me, when I play a mage, I prefer to mana storm Morgoth to death from a distance. Unliike pretty much every other character, I meet Morgoth in a large empty room with long un-obstructed line of sight. If he moves, I mana-storm. If he summons, I [mass]banish. If he mana-storms, quaff *Heal* or Life. If he gets close, teleport of phase door away. When you run low on mana, use the Staff of the Magi. It's good to keep a couple of scrolls of [mass]banish handy for when I screwup and let my mana fall too far before recharging. Note that you'll really want to get your INT at or above 200 to get zero fail on the [mass]banish; for your guy, I think swapping Villiya for Narya does it.

        This can go bad if you've left a lot of powerful Uniques out there (since they can't be banished). So don't do that.

        If Morgoth never touches you, the RoP are irrelevant, as is the charge draining attack. If you insist on using arrows, you should quaff Heroism, *and* Berserk Strength, *and* read some form(s) of priestly Blessing scroll(s). The extra +46 to_hit really makes a difference, especially for a mage.

            OMG - I didn't even look at the stats. A mage or priest should prioritize 18/200 as a top priority, certainly over rFire and rCold. If you don't think 0% fail is the highest priority, you should not play a pure caster.

              Nice, but with Rohirrmin and Palantir you don't need anything this gives. Use Hammerhand instead. +3 and sustains STR, DEX, CON and you get yet more to_hit and to_dam

              Lets see what we got with these changes:

              Narya -> Vilya +2 to all stats, speed, IMM_elec, dark, hold life, +4 to_hit to_dam. Sustain INT, DEX, CON, poison, fear
              Evenstar -> Elessar +2 STR, WIS, speed, resist poison, fear. +7 to_hit to_dam
              Elendil -> Palantir +2 INT, WIS, blindness, chaos
              Belegennon-> Rohirrim +2 STR, DEX, sound, confusion
              Gondor -> Hammerhand +3 DEX, sustain STR, DEX, CON, nexus, +9 to_hit, to_dam

              Total: lose rnether.
              Gain: Sustain STR, INT, DEX CON, +20 to_hit and to_dam, +6 STR, +4 INT, +6 WIS, +7 DEX, +2 CON, +whocares CHR, +1 Speed. Two healing activations.

                I think with mage/priest you need pretty darn high +hit and pretty darn high +dmg bow/arrows with slay evil to get anywhere near manastorm / orb dmg. It comes down to having enough mana, and 4 staves of magi = nearinfinite unless really really really bad luck (I guess you could unluckily blow two of them early in the fight and then the rest will go much easier).

                Also don't forget create doors. Make sure the ground is clear (turn of hidesquelch), stand in a big big open room, storm from afar, if hp lost > 300 or summons something too nasty, create doors and banish/wait for morgy to open door/teleO/disarm spell to destroy all doors. Repeat ad M death.

                  That's new. For some reason I have never thought about using create doors at final fight. To me has been more like "ugh, I'm Rincewind the Barbarian, I will hit you to head until you are dead" -approach.

                      Create doors is pretty useful I don't know why I didn't think of it myself...I might have won if I had.

                        Yes. In brackets obviously. There are more tags you can use but I'm not aware of more than just quote and code. Some smileys require tags, I think.

                          Sorry I was going to reply to your previous post but got sidetracked. You needed +1 int for 0% fail. I would have used Vilya. You also needed !mana and slay evil. I would have scummed for them wearing cubragol/vilya/narya. -annihilation would have been nice.

                          For Morgoth. m7a aka create doors. Go in the corner of a room in the corner of the dungeon and *doors. You'll have 3 doors surrounding you. Do not let him get into melee. Shoot at range +3. Rift when closer. *TelOther when at range 2. When you TO pick up arrows and if bored cast some runes outside your 3 doors. If you don't mind abusing LOS, close the middle door. About 50% of the time Morgoth won't have reverse LOS and you can pummel him. This works for all mage types.

                            Also do not be afraid to TO Morgoth. He will come back. With your limited ammo I would not shoot at range < 4. Although there was this one time the level contained symmet right in the middle and Morgoth kept getting stuck inside. I had to keep helping him out.
