Yeah, see, this guy didn't have the stats to pull off more than 2 blows with the pain glaive, so I wound up doing more with other weapons. Shame really, I was looking forward to making the switch to such a painful weapon. Ironically enough, the paladin I'm playing now has found some much more epic gear and is making 5 hits off of a battle axe of westernesse, and has some +3 speed armor, so I'm pretty hopeful.

      Update:

Met an OoD drolem at dlevel 34 and died instantly. Fail. Think I'll roll up a priest this time.

That's a lot OoD 500' or 10 dlvls. Maybe there was a vault nearby?

Wouldn't surprise me. It was on a really good level feeling. Worst part was, I had plenty of teleport (again), and was just about to have to recall to grab more _identify. I had a staff-recharging artifact cloak, which was really nice, until I got gassed.

That is really bad luck. Totally unavoidable death.
Try playng a ranger or rogue for a change of pace. (I'm partial to rogue, but others prefer ranger.)

I suggest giving monsters that are superduper annoying a nice exp boost.

Beholders, all kinds? Give a nice xp boost.
              Time hounds? Massive xp boost.
Colbran ... well not so much, IMHO it is not that bad except all those pretty -TO nooooo! =P

I agree sort of with both notions that there should not be monsters that are just there to annoy, but also with that there should be monsters that are annoying as hell and usually avoided (just as long as they are not ubiquitous like the old hound rarity). Having beholders and time hounds for example be huge xp potions I mean monsters would atleast lure those players who can tackle them but still need xp to possibly kill them.

Atleast I can vouch that huge xp has lured me into a death (stupid nether hounds =P). If time hounds were huge xp, every time I would see them would instead be a "can I kill em?" and not "not that way". Oh, and gravity hounds too should have huge xp due to lethality.

You'd have to raise time hound XP *a whole lot* to make it worthwhile to fight them. And even then, I'd probably avoid them. XP isn't that hard to find.

                  50k a time hound? =P I'd dig into that if I thought I could handle them ...

Time Hounds are quite OK as they are without XP-boost because they are extremely dangerous. I don't count them annoying because of that. They are the one reason why teleportation is risky in deeper in dungeon, which is a good thing.

That is why you don't need to do anything for them. Beholders OTOH are IMO just annoying speed bumps that are not worth anything. Either those should be made more dangerous or less tough so that you could kill them faster.

Well, increasing the xp won't lessen the danger, but might lure unsuspecting players (mememe!) into tackling them, not just purely avoiding them. I see no harm in that.
