    Huh? What's that?

    > You sense the presence of monsters!

    > You die.

    That was not so exciting

This was back in a time when I liked to clear levels so it was losing several hours worth of work. Vargo is native to 43. Admittedly this was avoidable: getting hit with a plasma bolt should have been a hint to get out of dodge, whatever it was. Frustrating nonetheless. Funny now.
I feel your pain. I think that sometimes when we play we forget that Angband is turn based. We have all the time in the world to think thru our move.

This one was kinda funny, actually.

I had found a nice vault, and I had no real escapes but I had a wand of teleport other with a few charges. There were some nasty uniques in the room and I used up my teleport other wand getting rid of them.

I entered the vault, and one of the first things I found was a staff.
My inventory was full, and for some reason I decided to just stand on it, use it, and see what it did.

It was a staff of teleportation.
I ended up in a room with three of the uniques from the vault, who gave me smirks, and killed me shortly after.

I rolled up a dwarfish rogue yesterday, and was diving to 1000' when I hit an undetected trapdoor. It dropped me into a room with some ogres, some hill orcs, and Wormtongue. While trying to walk out of that room (my only teleportation was Phase Door), Wormtongue woke up and slowed me. Then I ran into a druid right outside, who summoned a bunch of energy hounds and white wolves. Phase door just left me in the room, with everything awake by now. I tried to survive via my healing potion stock, phase door, and Word of Recall, but I died before the WoR kicked in, nibbled to death by white wolves.

I wish -TrapDetection were more common, but I suppose I could have been trying to cast the relevant spell...at a 50% failure rate due to my whopping 12 INT (but hey, I got 3 blows/round!).

That's not really a dumb death, that's just an inevitable death that comes with diving. I would estimate that at least half my characters die like that (usually after a stair descent, disconnected stairs and all) before they can afford _teleport.

Oh, fair point. This is a "dumb deaths" thread, not a "sudden deaths" thread. My bad.

Though I did have enough money to buy _teleport, so I suppose I should have!

I once found myself in a dead end, being beaten to death by some low level unique, maybe Brodda (FA). I was all out of escapes, and I even checked my inventory carefully to make sure I wasn't missing anything. After I was dead I realized I could have cast 'blink'.

That is probably the most annoying type of death. Thumb rule of the YASD is that when you check your inventory after death you find at least three items that could have saved you. I think that should include spells (IE. the item that could save you is one of the spellbooks).

I have done that. I believe everyone that has won this game has done that at least few times.

Yep, been there with this character... it took Psi to point out that I was wearing an artifact cloak with a teleport activation...
