    Dumbest death ever....

I'm in a room full of dragons ...awake dragons. Instead of using my staff of destruction like I should have a used a phase door scroll. F8(k I feel so dumb. I just got Bard and was killing everything in my path. I thought I'd just phase away and pick the dragons off one by one.

Lesson learned don't ever leave things to chance...use your best escape at all times.

    Off to start again.

So did your phase put you like 3 spaces over to the left and no less directly in the path of everything that breathes bad things? I have (unfortunately) done that many many times.

*Destruction* isn't all that much better than ?Phase in this situation. It has a relatively high failure rate.
If you must rely on a staff, this is the time for _Teleportation.

As for "dumbest death evar"... you have a lot of competition. Here's my contender.

The problem with Phase is that even if the spell succeeds, it could still move you within the same room and you'll still die.

        Moar liek ?fail, amirite?

(-_- I apologize. taking a long break from WoW does this to me...)

Heh. That makes me still laugh.

My most rememberable stupid death was against Dracolisk in GCV. I was at last row emptying that GCV and I had got pretty much every single piece of my gear changed to better one and was facing Dracolisk. No matter, I have immunity to fire and nexus resistance and over 800 points of HP and 6 blows with Glaive of Pain with huge damage boost and speed to spare and no FA....

Yep. I just got plain greedy and plain stupid...I should have either Destructed or teleported level. The thing is with this game is that no matter how powerful you get a group of powerful monsters can still kill you. I was hoping that I'd get "lucky".

            Lesson learned.

What was that, Ancalagon with escorts? I've never seen a pack of high dragons in the wild.

                  Ooh ooh, can I play?

It's a randarts game and I have two rings. One has Im_cold and a bunch of other stuff, but it aggravates. So I have another ring as a swap for running around. Problem is, I don't even have Rcold with the second ring. Guess which ring I was wearing when I decided to take on Huan?

If you've never seen your health go from 800 to -700, you should definitely try it!

Exactly...my dumb ass SHOULD have teleported away. Oh well at least I'm a better player for it. But I had all of the good gear which makes it that much sadder.

Ancalagon is a ravening badass in modern Vanilla. Way, way more dangerous than any of the other unique dragons. Compare:

Scatha: 2200HP, fast, 2x 4d10 physical + 2x 4d14 cold melee, 20% spells to breathe cold, confuse, or cause wounds

Itangast: 2200HP, fast, 2x 4d10 physical + 2x 4d14 fire melee, 25% spells to breathe fire, confuse, or cause wounds

Smaug: 2400HP, fast, 2x 4d12 physical + 2x 5d14 fire melee, 25% spells to breathe fire, confuse, or cause wounds

Glaurung: very fast, 7500HP, 2x 5d12 physical + 8d14 poison + 8d14 fire melee, 33% spells to blind, confuse, scare, summon ancient dragons, breathe fire or poison

Ancalagon: very fast, 10000HP, 2x 6d12 + 2x 10d14 physical melee, 33% spells to summon ancient dragons, summon kin (more ancient dragons), or breathe acid, fire, cold, electricity, or poison

So he has four times more hitpoints than most other unique dragons, none of his melee attacks can be mitigated by resistances (and his average melee damage is 228/round before AC damage reduction), and he frequently casts spells that are actually dangerous, whereas most dragons often waste their spell actions.

If it weren't for the fact that Sauron self-heals and teleports, Ancalagon would be a much harder fight.

You forgot the most important point. Ancalagon is immune to all the elements. If I don't have something with slay dragon, I don't bother with him. Let Sauron or Morgoth summon him, it's not much worse than the standard 'summon ancient dragons.' All the other dragons can be brought down by self-branded missiles. Now I guess if you're playing standarts, you have bard, so it's not that big of a deal...

Yes, I also have done the "oops, I forgot about FA" YASD after a kit reshuffle. I have also done this:

You are no longer resistant to fire.
                          The Phoenix breathes fire.
                          You die.

I still would have killed him if I weren't so d.u.m.b. See he was summoned so that meant that he and all his boys were awake in a room. I had been looking for him I would have TO his escort and used Bard to finish him off.

See, I tried to use the phase heal thing...rather than teleporting or destructing the area.

This is not my dumbest death ever, but it is the most frustrating. I submit this for everybody who thinks we don't get enough exciting moments with OOD monsters. FWIW I am on dungeon level 21:

                              > It casts a plasma bolt.
                              > You have been stunned.

                              Huh? What's that?

                              > You sense the presence of monsters!
                              > Vargo, Tyrant of Fire casts a fire ball.
                              > You die.

                              That was not so exciting

This was back in a time when I liked to clear levels so it was losing several hours worth of work. Vargo is native to 43. Admittedly this was avoidable: getting hit with a plasma bolt should have been a hint to get out of dodge, whatever it was. Frustrating nonetheless. Funny now.
