    Please advise...

    Hi,

I am trying to get a winner in under a million turns right now and looking for a little advice on what to do next. I am continuing downward, towards dlvl97, detecting and evading as I go. My weapons, armour and missiles can use a serious upgrade. Artifacts have been hard to come by, and my stats got scrambled about dlvl60 screwing my intelligence. Is it just a matter of keeping on at this point?

Int doesn't matter, but your con is too low. You should be carrying staves of dispel evil, power, and holiness for clearing pits. Try to return to town every 10,000 game turns but not when the turn counter rolls over a multiple of 10,000 or you will miss a restock. For the forseeable future, your goal is to collect stat potions, most importanly con.

You should also carry the best xbow you find so you can make use of ego bolts. Don't ignore them just because you are playing a ranger.

Thanks. I had _dispelevil but I can't remember what happened to it. I will be more careful next time! I have seen only a single xbow this entire game (+6,+3)! And that was before finding the ego bolts...I keep carrying them so I can use them as soon as I find a xbow. I have a =Con+2 in my house. That or =rpoison?

The int is frustrating because even if I find Tenser's, I won't be able to use it!

The int is frustrating because even if I find Tenser's, I won't be able to use it!
Better stuff will come soon. In the town if nowhere else. The change to power-based pricing has exaggerated the "game of shopping" effects. You should easily be able to come by more than enough money to buy the best items for sale.

You should save the two biggest int rings you find at home, best int hat, etc. Then when you find Tenser's you put on all your int items in town and brand your ammo. You don't really need Tenser's or the necessary high int in the dungeon.

Yup. Your int is so bad, trying to make it better is just a waste. (without fairly high INT, buffing spells beyond rFire, rCold and Haste Self just don't matter.)

Bad HP/CON on the other hand, can kill you.

At 350K turns, and +9 speed, you have all the time in the world to win in 1M turns. Focus on survival first; only then on getting stronger.

Things are looking up. I found a xbow of extra shots, some bolts of lightning and started picking off ring wraiths. Then in one of those little 5-block plus "item depots" I found the piece de resistance. Randarts rule!

            Code:
The Pair of Iron Shod Boots of Cuthon [3,+12] (+2)
                 +2 intelligence, shooting speed.
                 Provides immunity to cold.
Cannot be harmed by acid, electricity, fire, cold.
                 Prevents paralysis.

When aimed, it polymorphs a monster into another kind of creature.
Takes 100 to 176 turns to recharge at your current speed.
Your chance of success is 91.2%

Check out these boots! They're fur-lined so they keep me safe from any amount of cold, they have an eternal supply of omega-3 fatty acids to keep me smart, they have a bunch of glow-in-the-dark stickers on 'em, they have a battery and motors to keep on moving even if I get paralyzed, and there's this special attachment that folds out a mechanical arm to help me shoot faster!

...I mean seriously, what the heck? +2 shooting speed on boots?

I think the power calculator may be broken. The only artifact I can imagine these matching up to in the standard set is the One Ring.

Paging Magnate, Magnate, you are needed in this thread.

I agree, +1 shooting speed is ridiculous for any non-bow and should only appear on maybe one item in a game. +2 should be impossible.

First I saw it and I was like "Neat, boots with immunity to cold, and hey you needed int. Good swap if you find bos."

Then I saw +2 shots which means you're a machine gun.

                    Dead.

I was playing distracted and got darkness stormed by the Mouth of Sauron. Even while getting 5 shots/turn with my short bow of Lothlorien! Ah, well. I will start again tomorrow.

I looked up the spoilers and those boots were the only artifact with +shooting speed. There did seem to be a lot of immunities in the mix, though.

Got it on attempt number 12! 650K turns. No fancy artifacts this time, just a nice broad coverage of all resists and sustains. I melee'ed Morgoth to death in the end (more half-troll than ranger, I guess).

Thanks for the advice. Here is the dump.

I admit those +2 shooting speed boots were pretty amazing, especially for a ranger. But *THIS* doesn't qualify as a fancy artifact ?!?

I think this is the reason:
                          Code:
Restrict creation of artifacts : no (adult_no_artifacts)

It was nice to find, but it didn't fill any gaps in my kit. I found it on dlvl 96, towards the end of the game. It is a ring of power, of course, and nicely balanced for a randart, but not unexpected.

I checked the spoilers and there were a few nice ones that I didn't find. Something like these is fancy (especially because of their min level). By the by, can someone explain generation chance to me?

It's a percentage. Object creation decides on a base item first (helm, longsword, whatever) and then determines quality (average, magic, ego, artifact). If it gets to artifact, it cycles through all the artifacts available for the given base item, and tries their generation chance. If it fails to generate any of them, it falls back to an ego item. (This is a recent change, it used to generate nothing at all.)

The old parlance was "rarity", which was a 1-in-x check. So gen chance 100 equals rarity 1, 50 is rarity 2, down to 1 being rarity 100. The drawback is that it's now impossible to specify rarities greater than 100, or between 33, 50 and 100.
