I've probably played thousands of games and I think the earliest I've found the One Ring is somewhere around 3500ft... I wonder what's the chance of finding it this early (can you even use it at such low level, won't it make you level 1 forever?). The most unusual item I've ever found in the first 300' is probably a ring of speed +4.

i once got Word Of God from Maggot, and Trident Of Wrath from Boldor, but nothing of this magnitude.

Does it still have experience drain in new V? That's very nasty at low CL, and combined with aggravation, it could be unpleasant for early game.

It does. In recent V, it was changed to be temporary drain, like when you drink a potion of lose memories, but since you gain only 10% of experience when it's drained you would have to constantly restore it via potions of restore life levels otherwise you would be at 0 exp for a long while.
