I spotted it - but I thought it might be blasphemous to ascribe Ringil's ruination to the RNG, rather than player daftness.
It could have been worse - at least the +10 to speed didn't get reversed. A really nasty Curse Armor/Weapon scroll might flip all the Pvals to negatives...
Most likely the only reason it didn't go to -10 speed is that none of the previous developers thought to add that feature to Curse Weapon - look for a bug or feature request ticket to appear shortly.
But isn't it good to know that the game always has a surprise, even for the most experienced players? Disaster can strike at any time. Sort of like the definition of a good slasher flick - "anyone can die at any moment"

Actually, the curse scrolls have been toned down to just heavy curse, rather than utterly destroy items. I'm not particularly interested in discouraging people from doing ID-by-use.

well...curse scrolls are still strong enough that id by use is very dangerous when you reach their native depths. However, I think that this is fine. ID by use is really important for the first 30 levels. By the time you're past this you can afford to buy enough identifies to not worry about it anymore.
Question: what happens if you strip completely and then read curse armor, curse weapon? do you get a 'nothing happened' and an unid'd {tried} scroll?

Then you will get the message
"It breathes - you die"

My new and improved thanc(+9,+12) still got dropped to (-3,-3). Keeping the 2d4 dice means that I haven't died yet, but that may well just be delaying the inevitable. Also, the heavy curse means that afterwards it is impossible to id weapons by use because I cannot wield them! Swap weapons are out. All ego weapons have turned into junk.
Only 3 ?id all game, and 1 ?curseWeapon and 2 ?curseArmor. Does not seem right.
i suppose you'll say it's my own damned fault for playing ironman.
But if I stop playing ironman, I will have to finalize my buy-out-button patch. And if I cross Tak on that, I've promised myself I have to add a couple of options. But I don't feel like mucking with the code relating to birth options.
