    priestly ferric diving

    I've been trying to dive in ironman, using a priest for remove curse and portal. You absolutely have to buy ?PB2 and ?PB3 before you enter the dungeon, and I was scumming the town but that is too painful. Now I sell my mace, potions, and scroll to buy those books and a ?phase and a whip and some oil.

    I just spent 20K turns on the level so I could clear a square vault, and now feel the char has a chance.

    I just wanted to post a note that I practice what I preach. I have a dump from my current attempt on the ladder http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=9136 and it shows that at DL 71 I was wielding a shield of resistance. That's a fine item that is likely to be useful.

    However, when I got slowed due to encumbrance a couple of levels later, I tossed the shield and am descending without any shield. No boots either. That cost me the chance to try to kill a bile wyrm, since I could not count on the additional acid damage halving from armor.

          No thesis per se. It's in AAR thread about whatever seems relevant to the specific situation of repeated attempts to dive in ironman with a priest. I thought that throwing away my only shield, especially with it being "of resistance", was noteworhy. YMMV.

          I thought the char I used to start the thread would win, and figured it would be useful to have repeated dumps together here since the ladder overwrites prev dumps. Then that char died in short order and I decided there was not point in numerous dumps of chars that were unlikely to survive very long, so I haven't had much to say.

            I would have ditched sling & sling ammo before the shield. Your XBow is so much better than the sling that even branded ammo wouldn't keep up.

              But the bolts break so quickly. I think I remember either the ammo didn't weigh enough or I dropped it before the shield, so I might have played in agreement with that suggestion.

              If people want to give me advice, now is the time. I've got 3 rods of teleport other on the ground I'd like to pick up. Can I afford to aggravate? Can I afford not to?

              I had extreme difficulties in the first half of the game, and perhaps foolishly I made up for it by diving harder than usual in the second half. I only just found my first !str of the game at DL 85. I had no speed boost before DL 78, but now I am swimming in it.

                If you need the Rods of Teleportation, they are certainly better. Though with 18/*** WIS, you may not. (I forget how much mana TO costs for a priest.)

                Edit: what's the activation? (If it's Recharge, it's a very tough call.)
                Looks like there's a bug in character dumps.

                  Probably junk. I have an unnatural aversion to tossing gloves with an elemental resist.
                  The activation is useless, some bolt spell.

                  As to the rods, they are useful in allowing me to cast more orbs without worrying about saving mana for escapes. The point is if I am going to free a slot later the next time I find a new randart, I might as well free it now so I can carry the rods. My weapon looks spectacular, but it's not so great. Efficient priests kill with melee and use mana for healing, but I'm still orbing far too much.

                    OTOH, is very close to endgame quality.

                    I don't think you can do much with your equipment until you find an alternate source of RConf and/or ESP. As it stands, you are pretty much stuck.

                    Don't know if you can handle aggravation. The only way to find out is to try....

                        I pick up. separately, a couple of scrolls of enchant to-dam and carry them for over 20 dlvls just in case I pick up a launcher with low +dam. I finally find one, a heavy xbow (x4) (+4, +2). I read them both and neither works.

                        Note to self -- use them when you find them.

                            Is it time to debilitate?

                            I picked up a couple of mushrooms of debility I was planning to save for fighting Sauron, but I just picked up rPoison and there is a Swamp Wyrm nearby. I cannot do enough damage to kill it without restoring my mana.

                            So do I burn a precious consumable to kill it? If so, should I plan to use a mushroom of debility or the potion of rMana instead?
