    Your worst death?

I suppose there can be many categories for this:

    1. YASD -- You screwed up big, you paid for it.
    2. Unavoidable -- You never did, nor could, see it coming.
    3. Totally Absurd -- Just so funny, you laughed on the death screen.
    4. I was so close! -- You put up a good fight, against a unique, or the big P himself, but bit it in the end.

    1. I found Anduril (sp? 3d5 longsword with fire brand) thought I could kill a room full of ogres surrounding me. Never did find a weapon that good again yet. Also the countless times I had -tOther, or ?teleport or _teleport, forgot about it and died because I couldn't escape.

    2. Unavoidable - Netherbolted through a wall by a ringwraith I couldn't see

    3. I died from a trap after killing something, don't know why but I was just laughing.

    4. Similar to #2, my first char to get a boots of speed (it was +8). I was doing quite well, got blown up by a skull druj I think, or maybe it was a ringwraith? One of the two.

I don't remember most of the stupid ones. It's the funny ones that stick in the mind. I've had 3 memorable ones. The funniest is here:

Mine is in a reply in that thread.

My most impressive death was -925 hp, and I really was playing to win http://groups.google.com/group/rec.g...1bd8a3e995a6a9

New dumbest: Very promising with the artifacts I had found, Eowyn + Celegorn, I had good resists, FA, (no poison, but I did have nether!) some speed... life was good. Picked up a heavy xbow of extra might, life was better. Fought Uldor the Accursed, he summoned, put me to 70 hp, and instead of using my teleport level scroll, I USED MY STAFF, FAILED, AND DIED.

STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID Grr...

          1. Wasn't in much danger, but teleported anyway just to be safe.

          3. Obedience.

          4. Just a couple more rounds as long as I don't fail the heal ...

Your worst death is usually your most recent one, as the pain numbs over time.

            1. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=6999 . This was only my second ever NPP character and it was going too well. I foolishly read a scroll of Summon Unique and got one I really couldn't handle...

            2. My most recent death. Recalled next to a dragon of some kind who woke up and slowed me. Cast teleport self to escape and landed near to a player ghost who instantly paralysed me with a spell and then splatted me.

            3. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=6806 . Going for a low turncount had decided to take on Morgoth without a key resist and got instakilled by a double move before my first attack...

            4. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=7730 . More than "so close" - killed Morgoth and died in the same turn.

If I recall that thread correctly, we all thought that still counts as a win most epic win evar, imo.

If you're going out to free the world of Morgoth, then technically you succeeded.

                  2. Descending the stairs for the first time, with a floating eye on adjacent grid that wakes up and paralyses you to death has to be the worst. Has happened to me more than once, but I dont have dumps

The thing about this is: you don't have anything invested in the char, so you don't lose anything. Any deaths on dl 1 are (or should be!) meaningless bad luck.

50th level HE warrior with winning kit. My first real game in the new NPP, iirc- or maybe it was my last real game in the old one. Wanted to kill Vecna before M. Vecna is really a badass in NPP- he just keeps casting, and casting, and summoning, and casting, until he's out of mana. I caught him in a nice spot where he couldn't summon much and I had a nice hidden space to step back to, or so I thought...

He hit me with death. I stepped into a space that I'm pretty sure would have been safe in V. I activated Gondor, rather than quaffing a potion- I thought Vecna couldn't see me. The activation failed. Vecna hit me with death again. Second time was the charm. I think that's the only time I've ever lost a clvl 50 character. The worst part is that since targeting is symmetric in NPP I could have checked.
