I like rogue trolls, treating them like poor warriors with detection. I had more fun with initial Str and Dex starting at 16, but it is playable with 15 in everything besides WIS.

Troll rogue is best rogue. It takes a bit longer to get stealth up, but on the plus side you get to melee unlike kobolds and hobbits.

so, turns out the new ladder cannot have two character named PRIEST II

not a lot to say, i found a ring of speed +9 in the black market when CL29 / DL30, since i play with selling on i obviously have a ton more money and could afford the 105k that it cost.

Both Sauron and Morgoth fights were hard and long, because it's either Orb Of Draining of Annihilation (the spell) which is vastly underpowered (even compared to the wand of the same), no comparison to the damage that Chaos Blast or Mana Storm do.
I did have at one point a nice mace with +6 Spd and +1 blows that did over 300 dps to evil, so i guess i could in a pinch have used that in melee + Glyph, but the layout of DL100 was pretty simple so i put down a room full of Glyphs instead, and used my crossbow for damage.

Well yeah aside from the two final fights, Priest is incredibly easy. The endless spam of Heal and Orb can take care of pretty much anything, only think you need to watch out for is fire burning your books, and have a decent supply of Spd that don't constantly shatter.

The more I seethese characters, the more I want to stick with standard artifacts. +23 WIS?? You hardly need any !Wis with that!
Well yeah aside from the two final fights, Priest is incredibly easy. The endless spam of Heal and Orb can take care of pretty much anything
Paladin is easier still. Free slay evil, and you don't need to worry about summons in the late game, except in the last two fights. And possibly vs Ungoliant.

you mean 4.2.4 Paladin, that no longer has Teleport Other?

I do mean paladin without Teleport Other. In the older spell set, you get the spell at CL 25 with base fail rate of 80%. That means you won't reliably be able to cast the spell til after CL 35, when you surely will have other means of TO. (In fact, lack of full detection is a bigger negative, as the rod has a longer charge time and has no alternative.) But the replacement spells are just crazy powerful. But moat of all, it is genuinely different play from other classes.

Rogue is another story: all that's left of the class are high stealth, Haste Self, and detect objects. It alone
has the distinct feature of being significantly harder now than in 3.0.x. (Worse stats, lower HP, vastly inferior spells.)

i disagree. You get Slay Evil when you are already overpowered, just so you can have a MoD with 7 blows instead of 5. Wow.
That solo combat spell i have only used back when you'd lose all your missiles if you used them, and it would crash around 10-20% of the time so i left it alone.

When the run changes were made, i had a look-see and i agreed that the new system was better than the old one.
When the new classes/spells/books/mobs changes were made, i also had a look-see and decided that the older system was better than the new one. This ain't magically gonna change.
Aside from some absolutely baffling changes, like <=> being the "confirm keymap" command instead of <$>, or <m> the new cast button instead of <p>, the absolutely odious ringing noise i get every time i rest with R&[enter] and the new tiles, i just don't like the new gameplay. I liked 2.9, i liked all the 3.- releases, loved the 4.- development, and i just think 4.1.3 was the peak. Not all games continuously get better, and MAYBE in a few years 5.1 is going to be substantially different than 4.2.5, maybe with an expanded spell list, maybe with more books, or maybe just going back to the old D&D names that had no reason to be changed ..

                  High-Elf Mage 4.2.5

                  This was *incredibly* hard.
I nearly died (i think like 6hp) from running into Wiruin, which i later killed from around a corner because he doesn't move - basically a big Druji.
I note that the Nazgul are now far more powerful then they used to be, specially for me who likes to keep them alive until DL98. I remember asking for this myself, but DAAAMN they are so much stronger now.
I note that larger mobs/uniques tend to both summon and breathe a lot more often, i had a lot of close calls, and had to abandon several fights that got out of hand, more than one when the unique had 1 star left of health.
I'm not terribly fond of the shorter spell list, no S2M and no restore hungeh, have had to carry ?Satisfy Hunger until the end. Weird that Resistance is now in the starter books too.
The Mana Tap ? spell is far too useful, i wound up leaving all staves & wands unhidden, while i still normally do not use !Mana until the end, this time i had tons of extra mana on tap, you can even cycle Recharging and Tap + phase for near-infinite mana.
The new magic missile thing, Mana Bolt i think, is too strong compared to 4.1 mage. Starts too early and goes all the way to 40d8 damage, basically Chaos Blast but with lower spell failure and you don't need a DL90+ book to cast it.
.. i have no idea how many Mass Banishment spells i cast, in the hundreds, too much stuff that's too aggressive and dangerous to try to manage it.
I've also seen some weird pathing issues that were not there in 4.1 at all. Mobs/uniques not finding their way to me when i'm just a handful of tiles away.

Btw nice ring of speed +19 on DL100 to replace my RoS +14 i had before.
I also found some boots of speed +10 ridiculously early, idk DL6 or similar, and got Arcane Control from a scroll of Acq.

It's hard the first time. It does get easier, especially with mage and Paladin. I actually like the reduced spell set for mage: you can carry a lot more gear when you only have 4 books. And recharge on things like STM almost never fails.

But you missed the deadliest spell of all: dimension door. You want to blow up drujs? Just carry clone monster and stm.

Sky, when did you find the fifth spell book? Was it before or after this bit:

106254 2650' Found the Band of Throthil
108554 4400' Found the Bar Chain Mail of Belome

If it was after, I can see why it would have been a difficult game. I just finished a high elf mage iron man game where I found the fifth book on DL62, at CL42, which meant I had banishment and mass banishment well before some of the worst mobs showed up. A couple games previous to that, I found the fifth book on DL38. There's no need to dive deep to get it.

Here's that iron man mage, BTW.

Oh you icky things, don't you know you're driving your mamas and papas insane…

fairly early, and fairly easily. I think it was just lying on the ground while i was diving. I cast *a lot* of MBan, far more than i normally do. I'm used to having more options - and less aggressive mobs.

Are you using dimension door? Even if you don't cheese diagonal tunnels with stm, you can wreak havoc on summoners, let alone drujs. It's a bit easier with Paladins, tho they have to heal a ton of damage in payment.

i have cast it ONCE in the whole game.
Not because i dont know how to use it, but i'm generally pretty good at positioning, and i find the Thrust Away spell to be stronger.

i have been grinding for HOURS for a damn artifact light; to think i lucked out by finding ESP almost immediately and a x4 +27 artifact shooter, and a RoP on DL27, already have Resistance + rPois, 12 scrolls of DD at home, all i need is a damn damn artifact light.

(idk why the forum resizes the image when you click to zoom in; this is a PDSM [60, +23] of Craftsmanship)
