My first Quylthulg (LTm -13) I know how to spell "quylthulg", but in my entire history of playing Angband variants, I never encountered one until now. My ToME character knows Symbiosis and may use Charm Never-Moving on an adjacent monster. By fortune, this room's walls blocked my encounter with the quylthulg until I became adjacent. I tamed the quylthulg successfully before it could summon or take any other action against me. Now I wear the quylthulg and I have access to the quylthulg's Phase Door power. I assumed that Charm Never-moving required adjacency (as does Hypnotise) and obeyed that assumption to tame this quylthulg. Later I read about another player who used Symbiosis to tame a Death sword from a "safe distance". Thus I learned that adjacency is not necessary to Charm Never-moving. But I forgot, or I never knew, that I could use '*' to target a monster for Charm Never-moving (as I do when shooting arrows from a bow). Instead, I always line up the never-moving monster in one of the eight primary directions, clear the path between my character and the never-moving monster, and Charm Never-moving in that direction.
