To me the scariest thing is the lack of SI starting out. I gave up the quarterstaff early in favor of a defender weapon with SI -- less damage but at least the ghosts weren't sapping my experience.

It is also helpful to notice when my last Teleport Level scroll has burned up, so that I can start carrying Deep Descent. That was a bit frightening, especially when trying to dodge Dreads and hoping recall would kick in before they found me again.
