You've got to dive faster, even as a priest.
DL 2, CL 7, 360K turns is a recipe for failure.

At that turncount, you should be at dl 30, and cl > 20.

Try a different class--like Ranger!

I'm using the version that comes with Ubuntu; I wonder if it's showing the numbers off by a factor of ten. Do people really dive ten times faster than I do? I made three treks to dl1 first, then one to dl2, then one from dl2 to dl3, then one from dl3 to dl2 to town. I think I did another run to dl1 for cash once or twice. Not that it matters much, but I've been down to dl3, I just reset the recall depth with the last ?WoR. I rest fairly often, but not fanatically.

Turncount is time ticks (10 per turn at normal speed.)
And yes, people go down much faster. It is easier.
Rules: don't explore everything and don't try to kill everything. (Run away often!)
Start with a melee class and 3 or 4 blows from main weapon.
(With ranger this may be only 2 blows.)

DL=CL is a good model to start out with, up to around dl 20.
At dl 20, you should try to have the basics:
* Free Action
* ?Phase Door x10
* An Escape (Staff of Teleportation minimum.)
* some defense against confusion, etc. (10+ !CCW)
* 5 ? Recall (sufficient to avoid losing them all to acid & fire)
Also need:
* some form of Detect Objects, Traps, and Doors.
* Decent damage (to_dam enchantment) from weapon and bow.

Then get to dl 30 ASAP, where stat potions are native and ego items are common. It is much easier than messing around at shalllow levels.

BTW: If you see any scroll
s of escapes in the BM, buy them. The best ones make completely reliable escapes. (No chance of death.) Keep a few, and stash the rest at home.
These are:
?Teleportation
?Deep Descent (use these first!)
?Teleport Level
?*Destruction*
very rare:
?Banishment
?Mass Banishment

PS: you will find a lot more (and more valuable) loot the deeper you go. At dl > 10, basics like enchantment and CCW/CSW become easily affordable.

Well done! Your life would be a LOT easier if you carried ?Phase door.
If you can jump around indefinitely, Bullroarer and other uniques with no distance attacks can't touch you. You'll probably want better missile damage. Until you get plenty of mana and a reliable Orb spell, Priests pretty much need to rely on missiles.

PS: don't waste time enchanting a sling. A +7 longbow does ~30 damage, while the sling only does ~20. And the ammo is a lot lighter.

Thanks for all the help. I didn't know priests could use bows. I assumed they couldn't because arrows are edged weapons. I'll trade in my sling and iron shots for a bow and arrows next opportunity.

Yeah, longbow makes a huge difference. But only with plenty of ?Phase Door

On 5.1.2010 01:46 Pete Mack wrote:
EDIT:
And you may want to carry !Hero, as well. Buffing (with blessing spell and !Hero) can make a big difference. And you can't fight if you are afraid.

Ran into what I guess was an orc pit, but I assumed it was a unique plus entourage. Got tired of picking them off in small groups, but still went up a few hundred XP.

Protection from Evil should help a lot vs large groups of orcs
