Quaffing a previously unidentified !INT gave +0/33.
Found other !INT and a +INT helmet: many SP, more than HP.
Low HP makes monsters with launchers (like slingers) very dangerous.
Lacking basic resistances, only Wormtongue dropped a resist-something armour.
I need a defender or a piece of armour 'of resistance' and some !CON and +CON-something, if i don't find any maybe i will spend some exp in infusion and forging.
For now, i will stay with my spell level and mana points and will increment a bit wizardry and will focus my exp on defence (mainly dodging and spell resitance, and stealth).

Found the armour of resistance, dropped by an out-of-depth mature gold dragon.
Almost maxed INT and decent CON now.
I will delay investing in forging and continue to privilege defensive sklls.
Learned haste self at 2% fail, evasion and elemental protection at 0%, while wonder fires chaos, darkness and light balls and other wonderous things at cost of only 10 mana and is my main weapon.
I need a bit more hp to go deeper.

Now at level 43, power 61, 184 HP, 232 MP, 1186 score.
A mushroom scrambled my stats increasing wisdom and dexterity and reducing strength and constitution. Luckily dark-elves have intelligence sustained.
The low STR forced me to reduce my equipment.
Killed easily the three troll brothers together using haste, evasion, phase door, wonder and then the wands of acid bolts, but needed to quaff two !CCW in a row when hit down to 80HP.

Interesting - I've always wondered how people manage to get past the early levels with no melee or missile weapon skills; It's virtually impossible to kill anything with magic or devices at low level as you always have so little mana and the chance of failure is so high.

Level 44, power 64, 142 HP, 232 MP.
Found Phantasms and illusions.
A nexus vortex scrambled my stats again reducing CON.
The "heroic" dodging enhanced by the evasion spell saved my life several times.
I would like to go up some level, but the game doesn't let you reset the recall depth, so i think this char will likely die soon unless some lucky strikes happen.

@NotMorgoth: A dark elf with the Oath of Sorcery has 18/60 INT from the start, so you start with 6 MP and can fire 3 magic missiles at (IIRC) 14% fail rate. Usually this is enough to kill something, and, putting all the exp points in magical power , descend at level two with 15-20 MP, kill Grip or Fang and get your first score. The more difficult levels for me are those from 5 to 9, when you have to run from every group, or from monsters like a large kobold which sometimes requires 5-6 magic missiles to die. At level 10 usually i get enough devices (or money to buy some) to create my first backup weaponry, and from here things are much simpler.

Level 47, power 67, 335 HP, 173 MP, 1429 score.
Score increased thanks to Shelob.
Delberately let me blast from another nexus vortex and resolved the CON problem, but at expense of my INT (I thought sustain INT would prevent this).
My MP dropped from 232 to about 110 and i was forced to spend exp in magical power. A !INT also helped, and my situation is overall improved.
Began to spend exp in magical infusion.
I think i will learn forging to make use of the 18 chunks stored at home.

Level 60, power 71, 515 HP, 356 MP, 1429 score.
After being almost dead by an attack from two ancient dragons which confused me repeatedly, renounced to the blindness resistance in favour of confusion.
Killed Ulfang, Castamir, Lorgan and Itangast but no score progress.
Big exp investment in forging and infusion, but only a couple of attempts resulting in a shield of resist shards.

On 8.12.2009 16:45 camlost wrote:
Forging is more important than infusion. Also, you should be finding better stuff than copper chunks. In fact you have. Forging with copper is suboptimal, and even stops working after a while (trying to infuse a substandard piece of metal with too much magic is problematic). Try using your iron and steel chunks, even if you are saving up your runegold chunks for later.

I've found relatively little point in hoarding wands. The wands you are hoarding right now aren't end-game quality, so either use them as batteries (recharging + tap magic device) or offensively or both (I prefer both) or toss them. Just make sure to carry recharging.

You might carry a staff of teleport as one way of resisting confusion/blindness juggling, or maybe just more CCW.

@Camlost
I am substantially following almost all your advices.
Dropped all the copper chunks, made two experiments with iron and saving essences.
Dropped all the wands and using elemental ball rods.
Taken the teleport staff and increased the healing stuff, including some !Healing.
The major problem now are the nether attacks, from non-detectable monsters or hordes of hounds, and my HP dropped too many times below 100.

Level 71, power 78, 480 HP, 385 MP, 1553 score.
After a black "D" named Ji Indir Dawndeath reduced me at 5HP with a couple of nether storms i was forced to swap a +5CON ring with a resist nether ring, losing 25% of HP.
Harowen gave me some score points, and Kavlax +8Speed boots. Oher uniques proved to be out of my reach for now (huringwethil, Dwar, Draugluin).
Found Mordekainen's and Grmoire of wizardry (unuseful investment of 550.000 gold in the store until now).
Forged a couple of decent shields and gauntlets, but every attempt to obtain +CON failed.
My best score at Sangband ever (15 points more than the previous 1538), and near my all-variants deepest level (72).

On 14.12.2009 17:13 camlost wrote:
Just FYI, you don't need infusion to make stuff. You can forge randomly, and you'll still get quality stuff -- you'll just have less input into the final object.

Level 76, power 81, 494 HP, 389 MP, 1954 score.
Killed Scatha, Ren, Smaug, Maeglin and Saruman without much trouble (Maeglin without losing a single hp). All of them using 'wonder', still my favourite offense. Use of magical devices is rather limited.
Found Carlammas, which would give 81 more hp losing 45 mp, but being a mage i kept the mana amulet.
Found and forged some interesting armour, nevertheless i have only one source for the vital chaos, confusion and nether resistances and can't wear that +5CON ring.
Now i'm in absolute terra incognita after playing this game for years. Experimenting staves of power and wands of wizardry never seen before.
@Camlost: every time i add some point to forging i forge something, using the appropriate essences if i have them, or without otherwise.

On 20.12.2009 10:25 zakzakit wrote:
Level 81, power 89, 641HP, 412 MP, 2126 score.
Diving very prudently, no real danger.
Plenty of magical devices, but in 95% of battles no real need to use them.
Found a ring of speed +10, but no way to substitute the chaos and nether rings.
Used up all the chunks without attaining something really *good*.
Found lots of necromancy books, but no Raal's despite investing more tha 1,2M gold in the store.

On 21.12.2009 02:24 camlost wrote:
I would probably take +8->+18 speed over nether. Chaos is necessary for a spellcasting lock, but nether is just damage/XP loss (which isn't that bad in S). You also have teleport other, I expect.

I see neither _CMW nor _Heal in inventory, which seems odd. That's where I get the bulk of the healing for most of my characters.

On 21.12.2009 22:16 NotMorgoth wrote:
I find quest rewards are the most likely source for late game spell books, especially the last book of any type. My last necromancer got one Necronomicon from a quest at about level 75 but did not find another until DL 98 - and those were the only two I found all game.

On 22.12.2009 11:27 zakzakit wrote:
About the ring of speed, in the meantime i dived to level 91 (dump not yet posted) and found a ring of power which gives +10 speed and other bonuses so i took it discarding nether resistance, moreover i'm at 700+ HP now.
And yes now i'm carrying a staff of healing, but i underestimated the _CMW, i will try them.
Yes teleport other is one the most useful spells, most of the times when i'm down to about 100MP it allows me to take a breath and replenish mana.
My main problem are the summoner uniques, i succeed in reducing them at a few stars, but then usually i'm forced to flee or they disappear. But i'm still missing Raal's.
About quests, i usually take them, this time i decided so after some quest-takers early deaths. But probably it is a mistake.
Actually i found a Necronomicon, and probably other last books (not sure) but no Raal's. I hope to find it in the bookstore, after investing 1.300.000 gold in it.
I really would like to win my very first game, your hints and opinions are much appreciated.

On 22.12.2009 12:02 NotMorgoth wrote:
Camlost knows the game much better than me so he might have better advice; but I recommend that you do have rNether when fighting Morgoth. I'm not sure how much damage his nether storms can do, but in my last fight against him I took around 400 damage from one, with resistance. I'd definitely put it above rNexus, rShards or rLight, and probably also rPoison because you can get temporary poison resistance from a Potion of Resistance.

Finally got the Raal's Tome after a long time search. Obtained by Lungorthin. The total investment of 1,58MGold in the store was a complete waste: all the books were found or dropped.
Forged two very good items: the cap and the shield. I tried to force nether resistance in the shield with a couple of essences and succeeded.
In the list of known uniques there are 18 alive, so my way to mr. M. seems still hard and long.
Encountered Murazor and his death rays and i had to give up at 200 HP.
Maximized wizardry, stealth, dodging and spell resistance; began to focus on spellcasting to learn the last book.
Doubtful if it is necessary to invest more in magical devices, being able to use all of them at 0% fail.

Murazor almost killed, but run away at 1 star and i was unable to run after him.
Cantoras met 3 times, but i let him to summon too many, need to change strategy.

No use of the !life and the scrolls of mass genocide.

(I played the first time "The pits of Angband" in 1994, the "frog nows" release, when i found it in a "Libris Britannia" CD amidst other games like Larn, Nethack, Mag, Moria, e.a. and this is my first and only win).

Thanks.
Wizardry+magical devices+dodging+spell resistance is a really powerful combo in the endgame. In the final fight it was like having the globe of invulnerability. Morgoth was 4 or 5 tiles from me and the rest of the room was full of monsters in every tile, but they were not able to do anything i could not heal, resist or evade.
