All right. Reading too many of Chris's Hengband updates finally did me in.

While I did beat Hengband with several classes, I never played much with Entroband, so I'm giving it a try with a different Hengband class (for me), the Mirror-Master.

This was my 2nd attempt. I've had a few year break from *band, so I'm really rather rusty and slow. But in some ways my forgetfulness of the game has made parts of it fun again. Plus the new class doesn't hurt.

Just got level 30. Saw my first artifact (outside of randomart sling) at the 600' quest drop from some pushover or another, Thranduil. Nice not to constantly need to cast ESP now.

While artifacts have been rare, resist-ego items have not been. I've had all the basic essentials for quite awhile now.

This character had too many close calls to remember--one as low as getting to 4 hit points. Was clearing a rather tasty-looking greater vault in the Orc Caves when Scylla decided to pop up and melee me for a round. Was sure that was the end, but somehow I survived. Teleport away put both Scylla and a AMHD on some distant part of the level, and I was able to get most of the stuff from the vault outside of a couple little sections requiring more digging than I had charges on my wand. Didn't miss any legit artifacts, according to the Artifacts Seen list, thank goodness.

This guy's first break came during a dark elven lord pit at a fairly early depth. The mirror-master's "magic missile" is a light spell equivalent, so I couldn't help but make every effort to clear the pit despite the lords' speed advantage on me. Down pretty much every heal and almost every teleport means, I still got lucky enough to finish it. That's been this guy's story so far.

Kinda getting a little bored, so I figured I'd upload my best mirror-master before I make a stupid mistake. Still, Angand still hasn't lost its apeal to me. I guess after 15 years or so of playing this thing (though I take a few years off here and there), it probably never will cease being fun for me.

What a wonderful story :)

Good luck, I never did figure out how to play a mirror-master, so good for you!

Well, gained a few levels pushing further into the Angband dungeon. Was getting a little boring, so I decided to try and complete the Sting quest. I went in with 7 potions of restore mana, 3 healing, 20 cure critical, two staves of speed, and assorted teleport devices. Keep in mind this character has no melee ability against anything nasty. He was around 350 hit points before picking up Sting, and my plan was to blip around the various four rooms, hoping not to wake anything too nasty (as I recall, the real nastiness in The Vault are mass summon monsters, if you're unlucky enough to get them). Well, I managed to make a dash for Sting pretty early. Here's who also was guarding the Vault:

Sty (named "U", can passwall but not a problem since The Vault only has permanent walls), that Body Builder unique ("P") who can do a nasty sound breath ("Body cutter!"), a death knight (mass summoner #1), a Logrus Master (#2), a Crypt Thing, and the Queen Ant.

Well, the way this character survives is by depleting his mana pool (or nearly so), standing on a mirror, and then regaining it about 15 points at a time with his level 30 mana regain ability (only works on a mirror). Fail rate was about 20%). So I needed to stay hasted the entire time, make liberal use of the teleport away Mirror Master ability, and just make a stand in one of the 4 rooms, eventually clearing everything.

Another Logrus master was summoned during the rather epic battle. It took every restore mana pot I had, every cure critical, and all 3 heals. I managed to get down everything. I could have cut early with Sting and run, but what's the fun in that? Plus I was desperately after some intelligence items. Well, didn't net much besides level 33, but it sure was fun.

Needing a break for a bit. Hopefully I'll find those intelligence boosts soon and be able to do a little more ass kicking. Using the early shard ball spell is getting pretty old--there's a better ray spell that I can use soon, but at 20 mana a cast and a 15% fail, it's just not the best option yet.

My next move will probably be attempting the quest monster at 1800'. I got lucky and found a stack of 6 staves of speed in the BM, solving my haste problem for awhile.

Just a little update as I call it a night for playing. Got level 35, and a scroll of Acquirement at 1900' (I think, anyway) netted me Indra, which besides granting imm. to electricity, gave me my much sought after +3 intelligence. Spell fail for my Seeker Ray is at 2% finally. Only problem with that nuke spell is that it is a beam of mana, so bye-bye treasure if you keep using it. Mana pool is a little more respectable. I hope the fail rate for my mana regen ability can go down some more--15% is very annoying mid fight. Definitely need more int, but potions and booster items are pretty hard to come by. Interesting enough, my luck with resistances continued, and I now have everything covered. This saved me when working in the corner of some nasty vault an off-screen Doom Drake decided to make its full hit point presence known and drop me to 46 hit points.

So, the close calls continue but he's still going. Sitting at 1900' is boring me to tears but there's just too many nasty uniques to risk diving any further--if the level reads special, I'm going to clear it or die trying, for the most part.

Slowly trudging up levels. Finally found a single potion of intelligence and it didn't even boost me to the next mana/failure rate tier. The game is being excessively stingy with int items and those are what I need to make this guy fun to play. His main nuke spell is at a 19% fail rate and costs 30 mana, so unique battles are a mix of praying for successful casts, phase dooring away, regaining mana (14% fail rate ability, about 15-20 points a tick), and returning. This works for the most part unless the unique is faster than me (Malekith or whatever his name was). I fought that particular unique at least three different times, with him constantly healing every time I dropped him to 4 stars or so. His double moves, mass summons, curses and nether balls were all rather scary. Finally got him though. Dimension door will really make this guy fun but that spell is at a 60% fail and it's also very expensive, so who knows when I can use that. Here, int items!

Well, the slow roll continues.

Finally got another intelligence boost when I got level 40, so my main nuke is now at a 7% fail rate, which is glorious. Mana restore is at 12%, which is getting a little less painful. Still can't dimension door with its fail rate of 50%ish.

While I can't find intelligence potions to save my life, constitution pots have popped up a few times, so this guy's got a fairly decent hit point pool for his level.

Had a bit of scare when I ran out of staves of speed--beating on Heng/Entro 2000' depth+ uniques with +2 speed just wasn't going to cut it. I spent some time blipping from town to town hoping I'd find some, then gave up and just used all my enlightenment potions on the Anti-Magic cave, at 2000'. Still no staves of speed but not having any speed boost slowed my already slow game to a crawl. Fortunately after 6-7 more level clears, a stack of staves showed up again in the BM. It's pretty obvious from the day count on this character that I don't mind letting the BM and such restock. There's a nice little inn rest for the night feature in Heng that restocks the stores for you. I try not to overly abuse this, but for something that's absolutely essential (speed higher than +2 at char. level 40), sometimes it's necessary.

I'm feeling like my next stop is the Cloning Pits. Haven't done it in awhile, so hopefully memory kicks in and I don't do anything stupid. This guy is starting to get fun.

Well, the Cloning Pits was a success. No real scares except that every fire attack cast at me seemed to eat one of my staves of speed. Went in with 5 and came out with 1.

Besides the very useful quest reward, also netted Caspion, which while encumbering gives me a nice +3 int boost (1% fail rate for main nuke!). With Eowyn as my weapon, I'm walking around at a +8 speed and still have all resistances covered. Could have more hit points with a different arrangement, but this seems to max my int, speed, and resistances the best. Will be nice to finally ditch all those resistance rings but they're still necessary at the moment.

Considering doing more quests, namely, Doom Quest 2 (the one with the Iron Liches) and the Castle. Going to take a little break before attempting any more, but barring stupidity or a ridiculous vault somewhere, this guy should be able to keep going.

Finished The Castle and Doom Quest 2. Some mass summon chaining craziness in the Castle, but I never quite ran out of resources. The big game changer came for me in Doom Quest 2, where a Scroll of *Acquirement* lying on the ground netted me the Light Crossbow of Brand! Bye-bye useless res. chaos random artifact sling! Well, I had to do some major equipment juggling to get it all to work, but in the end I gained over 200 hit points, lost 1 point of intelligence (still 1% fail rate on main spell), lost about 25 max mana, but have everything covered, including see inviso, which I apparently lost when I stopped using Sting (though I didn't notice, because the ESP mirror-crafting spell also grants see inviso).

Out of quests I'm comfortable with, so I'll probably just power dive to the bottom of the Anti-Melee cave for a bit, maybe match that depth in Angband, then when I get bored push on to 3000'.

Going to stop signing my name at the end of these things, it looks goofy. :)

I was making fairly steady progress--didn't have any problems offing any of the uniques native to 2500-3000' or so. And then I hit this vault at 2450' in the Anti-Melee cave. I'll try and upload a screenshot of part of it (I haven't gotten close enough to see it all), but zipping after me from it were Brand and Julian (who were both fairly easy kills, and lucky no TY curse), and now Shuma-something or another, some really nasty beholder type who my 200 or so damage super rays barely phase, meanwhile he's bolting me with Psycho Spears, Hand of Doom, etc, and even double moved on me despite my +24 speed. I'm thinking I'm out of my league with him. I could just destruct him, but then there's the problem of the rest of the vault: just glancing in there showed me Godzilla, Tiamat, and a dozen other uniques I'm fairly sure are native to 4000'. Of course I can't handle missing everything by leaving, and I'm pretty sure *Destruction* in Heng/Entro destroys artifacts too, though if I haven't *seen* them (found them) I wonder if I'll miss them permanently. Anyway, I'm certain there's some ridiculously good stuff in there. I'm guessing this will probably be the death of this character, but hopefully if he's to die, I can grab a few trinkets along the way.

Almost level 45... experience gain is pretty steady, esp. killing uniques 1000' or more out of depth.

Damn this level is going slow. Not only did the vault have a bazillion impossible uniques, but the level itself was full of them. And of course, summoners chained other summoners, and overall it's been quite the nightmare. Still, netted two levels out of all the chain undead/dragon killing, and I still have barely put a dent in the vault.

Just beat Hastur. Was fighting that Champion of Chaos "h" guy (he can mana storm and he's quick) and had him down to 1 star, then he teleported away, and there was too much nastiness thorughout the level for me to find him to finish him. I'm out of all regular heals except *Healing*, so if I get low from a breath or two, I need to rest somewhere which means everything else heals. Swapped out my +2 int/hold life amulet for a +4 int amulet, and so far it's been a good choice. Plus nothing can hit me in the Anti-Melee Cave, so with reflection up from the Mirror spell I am pretty safe from life draining.

At this point in the vault, Tiamat isn't too far away. She's native at 3500' and can summon Ancient Dragons, as well as breath for nasty amounts. If my speed manages to hold, I might give her a try, but really, the best thing I could do at this point is just try teleporting everything away (that I can) and loot whatever's in sight. The problem is that a lot of things I'm running into resist teleportation (Elder Vampires, Dracoliches, Demlich, etc) and of course anything that summons something has to summon one of these guys. I'm rapidly running out of resources here. Still, fun level despite it being a fair bit stressful. Another update maybe later tonight, but most likely tomorrow.

Let's see... what uniques did I forget to mention from that super vault? Ungoliant and Locke the Superman to name a few more. The really nasty stuff was concentrated in a fairly difficult to reach place of the vault, on either side, though they were all awake and slavering to kill me. So once I cleared the vault of the relatively easy stuff, I just stood in the middle and read a Destruction spell. Turns out there weren't any significant artifacts in the area that I destroyed, so I was able to reach the farthest edges without being harrassed. Netted 2 levels and the Wizardstaff of Gandalf (which I'm using as a swap weapon at the moment. Maxes my int, but leaves me with light as a resistance hole).

Nothing terribly special to mention with this update--just haven't had much of a chance to play today or yesterday. After I finish this 2500' level, I'll probably hang a bit at 2500' then dive to 3000' in Angband.

Just a minor update. Next one will be at level 50, barring stupid death.

With the Gandalf wizardstaff, I'm at a 0% dimension door fail, which is pretty nice. Starting to play a little bit around with the Binding Field nuke (it does 522 or so dmg, but requires a bit of set up). Got to be careful while swapping out Sting, since it leaves me without resist light. But so far things are going well. Outside of that crazy vault level, things have been a little boring.

Could really use a decent cloak and gloves, preferrably with resist shards, light, or both.

Just picked up Crimson from a Great Ice Wyrm. No good gloves or cloaks to be seen thus far.

Cleared a vault with an OOD Amberite or two. Beat Azrael as well which is always satisfying. Finally got an ego cloak, though it cost me some stealth. Still hoping to improve both gloves and cloak slots. At least now I have light resistance plugged--when Azrael summoned *two* Sky Drakes while 2 Ethereal Dragons were in tow, I knew I couldn't play around with the light resistance hole anymore.

Taking a break again. Hopefully some more time to try again tonight. I think I'll stay at 3000' for a little longer, then take the plunge to 3500'.

Ended up having some plans cancelled on me this evening so it's back to the Mirror Master. :)

Dove down to 3500', and had a pretty lengthy battle with several uniques on the level, including but not limited to: the Dreadlord whose name I can't spell, Ger-something or another, Strongman of Amber, Tiamat, and a bazillion undead and dragon escorts, among other things.

Netted several nice pickups: Bullseye, decent stat cloak that I think is unique to this variant, Fingolfin gauntlets, and Thorin. Juggled my kit around so now I'm walking around with max int and con, plus two immunities and all resistances filled. Still have crappy speed for this deep (well, certainly for the uniques at 4000 and deeper), and both of my ring slots are wasted with resistance rings. Hopefully there's some uber piece of kit out there that can let me wear a speed ring or something.

Just a little update. Took a detour from Angband and power-dived to the bottom of the Graveyard. Vecna started off annoying with a mass summon of an Archlich and some Black Reavers, but after a little work I managed to get him alone in a nice room for a Binding Field wash (does 555 dmg a hit, 2% fail or 11% if I'm moronified, and requires 2-3 strategically placed mirrors to work).

He dropped the Trident of Wrath, of course (native drop for Graveyard clear), as well as Soulsword. Might be able to use Soulsword but I still can't quite max everything with it just yet.

Nightly update. Dove to 4000, since I wasn't seeing too many uniques at 3500' anymore, and frankly I was getting bored out of my mind. Just recently beat the Mouth of Sauron and Uriel. Everyone who can chain summon (that is, group summon other group summoners) definitely annoys the heck out of this character. I just recently got a Staff of Destruction, before that, just had to deal with everything. Hopefully this eases the burden of beating some of those above mentioned monster types.

Kinda hoping for the Jewel and I'm not sure what else... some +int/high resist armor to replace Caspanion. Oh yeah, and being higher than +14 speed. That's a definite character killer waiting to happen (Unicorn, anyone?).

Whew. Mid greater pattern vault (I'll upload a screenshot shortly). 10 uniques in there: Fenris, Ansalom, Draug, Oremorj, Tulzszha, Mephistoles, Godzilla, Klingsor, and Atlas. Fenris, Ansalom, Orem, Tulz, and Godzilla down. Godzilla could have fairly easily killed me with his superior speed to mine (still only +24). I've a feeling tangling with Mephistoles (incredibly quick) with my speed will also prove potentially fatal. Going to try and destruct him if I have the option.

Diatribe dropped off of something, doubt it's much use for a caster, but we'll see. Still have a fair amount of that vault to clear. Fortunately the battle between Oremorj and Tulzszha left Oremorj at 1 star. He still had a huge cohort of Cyberdemons that saw plenty of use of my 11 rods of teleport other, plus 2 scrolls of genocide.

Still going, though unless the speed problem fixes itself soon, I don't expect a winner here.

If the speed is _really_ bothering you, why not do the following:
ring of light and darkness -> ring of speed +9
palantir of westerness -> phial of galadrial
This will leave you lacking light resistance, so maybe carry your ring as a swap. Really, with your massive pile of hp, lacking light resistance is not a big deal, though you will want it for the likes of Raphael and the Unicorn. And you can just cast telepathy ...

And I *do* expect a winner here!! Good luck!

Self-fulfilling prophecy, I'm afraid.

Screwed up tonight. Was dealing with a massive chain of undead summoners, and somewhere else on the level (4400') was Sauron, who summoned specials, which included a lovely reunion with Shuma-Gorath, as well as Loki and a couple other fairly nasty uniques.

At some point while dealing with all the undead, a teleport landed me in the big room with Sauron and all those uniques. I was at around 800 hit points/1000+, but I don't think my semi-invincibility was up, so after a dispel magic hit me (dropped me to +17 speed), a huge list of attacks followed that ended in a -50 hit point death.

Definitely could have been more cautious. Ah well.
