First time playing unAngband. Not used to non-linear angband varients, so i think I'm doing pretty well. I did a bit of exploring , and got to a number of towns and dungons, but I think that I should stop that, and just play at one reasonable town. I tend to survive better when I do that.
A bit sad that I haven't found any real ego items yet, but what can you do.

On 10.6.2009 10:03 Bandobras wrote:
Un is famed as quite hard, so you certainly do very well for a newbie!

About ego items: tough luck, but you can still improve your current items, especially the sword, by dipping them in potions, mushrooms, etc. Also, try some throwing weapons (also coated with dangerous substances!) and carry them in the quiver so that it does not cost you backpack space.

Good luck!

Starting to find some better things, looked at some of the files to to figure out that i needed to have more str then size. Can't believe how much HP I have with this little con at lvl 25.

I'm surprised nothing crazy has come to kill me yet. I did have a scare with some invisable creature which was just completely kciking my ass. I couldn't even hit it while trying to get it to follow me. Thank goodness i had a tele staff. Almost killed myself trying to kill it.

I'm a bit currious about how stats work in this game. Do you just always increase them in this way, a few every few lvls, or are their actual stat pots eventually?

On 10.6.2009 15:10 Bandobras wrote:
HP are affected also by SIZ. Stat potions have only temporary (but big) effects, but you must have already seen a ton of them in the dungeon, haven't you? They also restore stats, IIRC.

Either the game got easier, or you are indeed doing very well, and using only half the tricks (the ones common to all variants)... Oh well, there are enough nasties ahead to teach you this and that while you run for your life. :)

On 10.6.2009 15:46 Schroeder wrote:
hehe...yes indeed. Nearly got killed diving too deep in isengaurd. Fortunately, i had enough consumables to wait for my WoR to kick in...

I've noticed the game crash a few times, suddenly, and without any prompting. I haven't lost anything important, but one specific incident, which happens right after this dump, is that when i try to < to isengaurd from fangorn, it quits. Hopefully, my dump can give some info, but i have no idea whats causing it

I've been having some trouble with ID. It seams like your *never* given enough...I'm so very very used to being able to buy as much as you want. And now, since I went to this one scary location, a lot of my former loving towns are much more scary. At least I still have Edthros. Fun place.

But just a question...what is petrification?? I was fighting something in there, forgot to bring hero pots, and i got feared, so i had to recall. At which point, I realized i was petrafied (couldn't move). Now I have resist fear, and I don't see a resist petrification thing anywhere, so idk whats up. I had to <> up and down, looking for a safe spot to rest off the petrification.

And yeah, game is getting much tougher, especially now that I made the shit hit the fan with evil coming to all the places.

On 11.6.2009 05:12 thorgot wrote:
I believe petrification is super fear, so you can't attack or move, and if you have resist fear you cannot be petrified.

On 11.6.2009 06:01 Schroeder wrote:
I have resist fear though, as can be seen from my C screen... And also, you *can* hit stuff. You just can't move.

On 11.6.2009 08:18 andrewdoull wrote:
Petrification can result from overloading fear - but can also occur independently (some monsters attack to petrify). I believe (but haven't confirmed) free action should help you for those...

On 11.6.2009 08:39 Schroeder wrote:
So my Inyare hath died. I'm fine with it. This varient was starting to feel a bit strange to me.
Tried to take on that nazgul agent at rivendel, but didn't realize how tough he was. Thought it would be fine, but i was obviously wrong. Threw some arrows at it, and was dead before i realized it.

On 11.6.2009 09:18 andrewdoull wrote:
Bit strange because it was more effective throwing arrows than throwing weapons? Or was there other issues as well?

On 11.6.2009 10:37 Bandobras wrote:
I suppose it feels strange when played as V. Especially with a non-V character, such as that, and in campaign mode. But let the hero himself speak... :)

On 11.6.2009 11:45 Schroeder wrote:
Oh, your suposed to throw weapons? Rofl. Well...ok. I usually didn't bother keeping throwing weapons.
But yeah, I figured out why I kept on getting feared and petrified. I had a disease which was doing it, even though I had resist disease. It nearly killed me too. I had recalled down, and I got petrafied and afraid, so i went back up. Something must have happened to my food, cus I nearly starved to death after I got back up. Had to quaff recovery pots for nureshment. After (game) hours of resting, i was losing health, and then i suddenly go unpetrafied, and ate some berries off the ground.

As you said, unang is *very* different from angband. Disease, different stat system, many towns... I might have been ok if i had just stuck to my V roots and found a good, deep, dungeon with monsters i recognized, but ah well.
