Ironband. 3rd character. My death was caused by basically not ever detecting and getting breathed on by some exotic breather unique.

It felt hard but appropriate early game, extremely easy midgame, then there were 3 powerful uniques all at one level. I killed the dwarf one, had to run from Uriel Queen of Air or whatever and got killed from 2/3 health by Sythsyxxths.
I think that if the regular enemies gave more challenge, it would keep me on my toes. I like the ranged traps tho. I had a run in with a time trap and it made me really run around drinking unID'd potions hoping for restoration (which i luckily got).
All in all, this is a very fun variant devoid of shop scumming, having to stop diving to go sell things and all that boring stuff.

Nice effort! Yes, I too expect to be kept on my toes a little more as I descend, and I agree with your summation of the early game.

BTW, Uriel is on my "don't even try to fuck with" list in ironman modes. The other elementals I'm mostly not too scared of, but she is frickin' savage. Nice to see that fleeing is necessary when uniques gang up on you. I always love the counter-intuitive idea of running to safety, _towards_ Morgoth...

Your stats seem a bit crappy for a character that made it 2/3 way into the dungeon, but maybe I'm not equating the new system correctly.

Grrr, 4th is no good for me, I have to go play this now.

Not sure what possessed you to fight a big chaos breather with no resist and with <400hp. Greed? Or didn't you know how nasty his breath was?

Hey, thanks for the feedback.

You died to one of the nastier new uniques, not to be messed with lightly.

(Would you have been better off with the vampiric warhammer?)

I have never really played vanilla, and my highest character in Zangband was only about level 26 or so. So i had no idea how powerful i was supposed to be before uniques like that were dangerous.
About the dragon, I didnt even get him down 1 star before he killed me, so I dont think a weapon swap would have mattered.
The reason Uriel is so dangerous is she has lightning storms which do HUGE damage even with resist, she is fast, and she dodges most attacks.
My strategy for taking out most uniques was a potion of speed, barkskin (temp +30 AC !!), bless, and heroism or berzerk if i had it. I would do so much damage that it wasnt even fair and i could usually kill the unique and half the summons before my speed ran out. This only didnt work well against some of the dwarf enemies which disenchant (i killed them, but my stuff got crappy), and the aforementioned powerful uniques.
For crappy stats, I wasnt that lucky with artifact or armor drops, so i had very little +stat items. For a very long time i was dual wielding = of +accuracy. I was waiting for a slaying ring so i could hit stuff and still do damage but it never came.

Also, when should i consider it worthwhile to cast detection magic? I never did, which may have contributed to my downfall.

On 1.12.2007 00:42 daven_26d1 wrote:
Reading your comments, not detecting obviously got you jumped on, but lack of experience probably got you killed. If you come across a big breather unique, like a dragon, its usually smart to have >450hp (just a general rule of thumb) unless you are sure you have resist for its breath.

Anyway, detection:-

In the early game you have detect animals. Because mana is scarce, its not worth using too much, so you can have SP for stuff like bless. In this variant, I mainly used it to keep tabs on where the dogs had run to when I hit them hard. However see breeders below - all of the early breeders class as animals.

However, later on detect spells should be cast regularly, as they are really cheap anyway. At the very least, you should detect (monsters if possible) when you enter a floor, so that you can spot any problem monsters or packs (good for spotting breeders so that you can seek them out before they start spawning). Likewise, dangerous uniques can then be avoided completely in a lot of cases. casting a few times more as you reach different parts of the floor also helps. If there is nothing around that will give you any issue, trot about and kill stuff, only bother with recasts when something dangerous may have moved position, or if you have spent a lot of turns digging or something - a nasty may have turned up.

Detect traps, clearly you should try to blanket the whole level with, but no need to recast in the same area. This saves food and light as you dont need to use searching mode. Trapdoors are horrible in ironman mode, and not landing on them is a good way to do better.

Detect evil, while not as generally useful as detect monsters, does have the extra power to detect invisible evil creatures, like ghosts. If you have it use it either when you become aware of an invisible monster nearby, eg hear smeagol, or get "it touches you" message:- for the ghosts, may give you a chance to attack it, with smeagol you'll usually want to get away from him if you cant see him, but it helps to know which way to go, or if you can spike him in a room.

Its also a better-than-nothing substitute for detect monsters as used above, if you dont have that one.

detect objects is a luxury a lot of the time, but it can help you decide if a vault is worth going for or not, also if you are in a rush to get food or light, it becomes invaluable... when deciding a floor is to dangerous to stay on but are not in immediate danger, it can allow you to see if anything is nearby that you should grab first.

Not that I'm sure if Smeagol is even in this variant...
