1. Max depth I think is your recall depth, so if you recalled out of level 8 and said yes to 'reset recall depth', it would give a maxdepth of 8, even if you had been deeper previously.
2. There is never a reason to clear a jelly pit (which is I assume is what you found - lots of js, ms and ,s), particularly not at low levels. They ruin your stats and experience and give almost no drops.
3. Dungeon level 11 at character level 23 is incredibly slow. Dive deeper, you will die a bit more but a) you'll get better equipment and b) you'll learn what to avoid.

Ahh. That explains it with regards to the recall stuff. As for clearing the jelly pit, I made a mistake :P It debuffed all my stuff, and it hurt :P The bigger mistake though was not knowing later on that the Banishment scroll would hurt me that badly.

Also, diving quicker/deeper.. I'm trying to figure out what a good pace is... or is that just one of those things I should learn by trial and error? :)

Once you get stats maxed there you can go deeper, but after level 39-40 you can get killed in one turn from a Drolem/Ancient Green/ Ancient Multi-Hued Dragon (AMHD). Those begin to appear at level 39 IIRC.

After that it's about how you feel. I tend to hang around at level 50 to find some nice items. But again, it's all up to you and your playing style.
