First female character - wanted the extra gold to buy the second spell book straight off! Made the trip to Ephel Brandir during the first night, then leveled up in the Underworld - it is a necro's paradise...

Mim was relatively straight forward. He fell on the first visit to AR30, though I did have to teleport on a number of occassions after he healed up. I did run out of phase door, but decided to give it one last shot and Mim died to my very last spell point - sweet!

Major turning point has been finding Holhenneth for rBlind allowing me to begin diving in Nargothrond. Then I had the sweetest of finds... killed a few black oozes which left behind two unidentified potions - experience and augmentation. It worries me when the RNG gets like this...

OK, so let's imagine an amusing death for you. You find the demon themed level, and after an intense fight kill a pack of greater demons. After picking up their drop (including several high books, a ring of eregion and the necklace of the dwarves), and still with your HP depleted, you are blinked into a lava pit by a tengu.

Just had the closest of close shaves... was battling the Queen Ant with repeated Stench of Death's against her and her summons and I was only really paying attention to whether the red ants had burnt any of my spell books or not. When the Queen Ant died along with the last of her pets, it was only when I got my 'You absorb too much mana" message that I realised I only had 30HP. I have to be a bit more careful than that if I want to progress this character!

lol Nick - just seen your post! Would have been equally amusing for me to have died from absorbing too much mana in that last fight too...

Big hole now is nether, as a nether wraith took me down to 30HP! Man, those last 30HP are serving me well!

Still after teleporting it away and then a Death Drake and a Balor(!), I finally landed my hands on Mysteries of Utumno (identify spell at last!) and a ring of posion resistance (getting ready for Glaurung...).

Rogrog had dropped Mablung prior to that vault which really helped. It was the same vault that had put paid to Psi Lencer (and both contained Kavalax...!) and I'm sure the same fate would have befallen Psiren if it wasn't for telepathy!

You may not have RNether, but you've almost got light immunity...

Is there some significance to light immunity?

I think the RNG must read the ladder. I took the stairs down to DL50 and lo-and-behold Alex Cutler the *Nether Wraith* challenges me. I check out his biography and he's level 65. I was going to head straight back up the stairs at this point, but I decided to cast shadow mapping first only to find myself next to a dungeon city vault (what is it about DCVs? I've never yet seen a GCV in FA, but I get DCVs every few levels it seems). Anyway Alex is locked away in the central fort (along with another Nether Wraith for company). So as long as I don't stray to the other side of the city, I should be safe for now... here's hoping for a source of nether resist before I try to coax him out and teleport him away...

On 12.3.2007 12:44 si_griffin@yahoo.com wrote:
Lucky to be alive... not once, but twice did I not spot Alex creep on me whilst resting (the black tile for nether wraiths are not good for visibility!). Thankfully he only nether lanced me once during his double moves allowing me to phase door once and then TA him the second time. Two such attacks and I would have been dead.

Haven't had a chance to update the dump yet, but just cleared the Dire Wolves level. Finally got a little speed from a RoWarfare and up to CL42 - just one away from Genocide... :-)

Glaurung is down. He didn't bother breathing or summoning. I dark-balled him until he turned tail, at which point I only had 4SP left, thankfully one dark bolt for 3SP finished him off. His best drop was a shield of resistance. Great.

Took channeling, which means at CL43 I can now manage a casting level of 72.

That's funny about the Dungeon City Vaults. I've come across a goodly number of them, mostly around dl 25 - 50. I've only seen one deeper than that. I'm glad someone else is noticing them and it's just not me. GCV's crop up pretty often too, in my experience, just only at deep depths like 80-100... I've yet to see one shallower.

Funny about light immunity, that's a good one. At least you don't have to worry about the Phoenix. Well, the light attack anyway... :) I still have a grudge against the big B ever since he blinded me with scien.. I mean light.

No, no significance to light immunity - I just found it vaguely amusing that you had 4 sources of RLight. Dunno what it is about the DCVs - the generation algorithm must favour them somehow. Back in the days when I had characters that got that deep, I used to see a few too.

Currently scumming around for rNether at DL55. T-I-G doesn't really appeal without it. I could just genocide all nether breathers I suppose - infact that might be the plan as I'm too overpowered for where I am now which is dangerous as Psiren is getting overconfident and a bit sloppy. She keeps wading into vaults, pits and nests and attempting to just obliterate everything with little thought to her safety or what might be just off my little screen!

Elenwe does have rNether, but then I lose rConf from Thalkettoth, which I could replace by using Totila, but then I've lost both my sources of rShards and a whols stack of HP from Rog. Decisions, decisions...

Finally found a =oNR which will do as a swap for my =oPR for now.

Looking in my notes I'm quite gutted to see that I killed The Ickiness recently whilst diving down T-I-G - I must have nuked him in a darkened room. At least The Desperate Adventurer is still out there somewhere for when uniques get summoned...

Can't update the dump yet, but just finished stat gain. I've also found a randart cloak that has enabled me to rejig my eq. It had rLightning, rPois, rLight, rDark, rConf and regen. Therefore I've been able to trade in Thalkettoth for Elenwe and Haleth for the Shield of the Elements and my resist ring for a =oCON. This means I gain rNether and rSound, 150+ HP and 20SP (lost my encumbrance) at the expense of rChaos and 20AC. I only have single acid resist, but with the activation on the shield I get 80% acid resist and immunity to the other 3 elements. The beauty of this is I can ditch the =oCON and boots without losing any resists (does stability give you anything over straight nexus resist?).

Just met my last Necro attempt Psi Lencer the Lich in a vault. Dispel Undead soon accounted for his 900HP at a casting level of 77...

Nick, just wondered if it was possible to get randart jewelry in FA? I haven't seen any yet, so I'm guessing not. Have you done anything to balance the loss of the Elven Rings of Power in the end game? I'd always be wearing one (or two if I had enough speed without) in Vanilla or ToME.

On 15.3.2007 13:44 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote:
No, no randart jewellery - not a bad idea though... A few items got improved (notably the Necklace of the Dwarves) and added (Elessar, which isn't in O), and some of the item sets are now pretty powerful, but otherwise nothing really to balance the RoP loss. On the other hand, Bahman reduced a lot of the artifact resistances in O1.1.0 and I haven't done that, so I think the balance might still be OK. I'll be interested to see how you find it :)

Psiren came across her first GCV yesterday. Being careful to wake up as little as possible she opened the vault and teleported away the Serpent of Chaos in the first cell... Hmmm no treasure. Two cells further in... still nothing. It is only when taking off Mablung that she realises there are no objects until the central cavity. It is a chest vault, not a GCV - thought it looked a little more compact than normal! Anyway the loot in the middle looked tasty so taking her life in her hands, she worked her way through TAing The Defiler, Wiruin, Carcharoth, Calcollo Greencloak, Tselakus, Draugluin, Lungorthin, Feagwath and others along the way. She got drugged three times (no chaos resist), but survived only to find none of the loot was of any use at all! I was banking on one of the two bows being Belthronding and hoping that the crossbow might be Cubragol, but of course no such luck! Even the three chests were full of junk. Curse you RNG!

Going back to DCVs, I've just checked the vault edit files and a DCV can occur at any level, whereas most other greater vaults kick in at much higher levels - this explains why they crop up so much between 25-50 - the RNG has little other choice of greater vaults!

Nick, I'm not sure I've seen a greater wilderness vault yet - are they supposed to be that rare even with autoscum on?

I probably should reconsider the vault level restrictions - I haven't changed any of that since O, and the dungeon arrangements are quite different now.

As to greater wilderness vaults - the chance of a vault becoming a greater vault is 1 in (100 - level), so they are quite rare. I think that's right, because the should be very dangerous.

Must say that the bubble vault is a bit too easy for the rewards gained. Though the individual monsters are very tough, because of the bubbles you can wait for the monster to move out of LoS before opening each cell. That way you make sure they don't get a free move on you before you TA them.

I'm up to +41 when I activate Tulkas which borders on the ridiculous - my previous chars have barely managed half that speed! I only haste up for big fights - though saying that if Tulkas hasn't recharged then I don't bother and just wade in anyway! The necro spells at my casting level (max of about 83/84) and speed are making it a bit cheesy at present - my only problem is that I keep getting drugged!

Found Dor-Lomin this morning, which means I can thank Mablung for some excellent service and hang him up back home. I lose about 35SP to the encumbrance but gain 170HP and a boost to rBase which seems like a good trade to me. Also bumped into a Sky Drake, so Psi Lencer has been avenged. Very satisfying...

Currently diving down in T-I-G stopping for superb levels and to knock off any uniques that I detect on the way down to you-know-who...

Had a slightly close call... Attempting a vault on a superb level, I didn't realise the Emperor Q was within one of the rooms, he summoned greater Dragons, including Ancalagon, I used the staff of winds to leave the vault and then lay in wait for Ancalagon and friends. He then also summoned Ancient Dragons including a Wyrm of Balance who breathed on me - 600 points of choas damage! If I'd realised they were choas breathers I'd have genocided 'D's straight away! Anyway I then teleported to the other side of the vault (and genocided 'D's!) and the battle will renew afresh when I make it back through.

The question is do I let Vecna out who I can see on this side of the vault? He ultimately accounted for Psi - my last character to make it this far so revenge would be nice, but the Necromonicon spells would be much better for him... no doubt I'll risk him when the rest of the vault is clear!

Well the decision was made for me when I fell down a trap door... at least I'm moving in the right direction!

Now found Himring as a potential source of rChaos (but I'd lose sound and nexus) and a ring of Eregion (+5) with Shard resist - if it was a little higher I'd swap for my RoS, but I'll just avoid the Shard breathers for now! If I find Cubragol, I may swap it in.

Last night, Cantoras taught Psiren that she couldn't be so complacent. She was having the toughest battle that she'd faced in a long time when he summoned Vecna and friends. She had to banish evil and leave them for later. Then after the dump I swapped in the Swan shield. I find stat drains annoying, though resistance is probably more likely to save her life!

She then toddled down to T-I-G 85, which was... interesting. It was only a good level, so I searched everywhere for the down staircase but to no avail. Whilst I was aimlessly clicking on the screen to search unexplored areas she suddenly ran into a bunch of 4 or 5 Great Wyrms of Power (who had sneaked out of a Dragon pit) - thankfully only one breathed and it was something she resisted! Phew. She teleported away and genocided the lot. The search continued until I suddenly spotted Sauron! No wonder there wasn't a down staircase, T-I-G seems to have been truncated at both ends since I was last there!

Psiren lined Sauron up at the end of a corridor and then pounded him with Orbs of Death - unless he injured her, when she would use Vampiric Drain to heal up and damage him at the same time. She used one !oRM (and one !oHealing by mistake when I was trying to quaff the !oRM!) and he fell before he got to her end of the corridor. Psiren is now back in complacent mode again after that!

I then decided to set up recall points in the last two dungeons, neither of which I've visited before. Nan Dungortheb was a surprise as I was looking on the map for something saying 'Dungeon' but then just found myself there anyway!

Nick, on my travels I discovered that I can teleport into Wilderness and web vaults as well as into the void at the edge of Nan Dungortheb (which leaves me floating!). I can also genocide the inhabitants of Wilderness vaults, but not of web vaults.

There should be a staircase near the chasm somewhere leading out. I think it would work better if the staircase created underneath Ungoliant when she died, kinda like when Morgy dies. If the staircase didn't get created that would be interesting. I was able to get to Nowhere Town from the bottom of Dungortheb so maybe there is something broken down there. Did Dungortheb used to be deeper? Maybe that's it. Anyway, I've taken it once before and it brings you to the forest where you jump down. Darthonion? I forget. Good job killing off Ungoliant!

I then had to teleport again hoping to avoid Cantoras and friends.

My hitlist now consists of Gothmog, Morgy and... The Desperate Adventurer. If Morgy doesn't summon TDA I'll have to track him down later... :-)

EQwise I swapped in The Necklace of the Dwarves, but after the aforementioned vault I swapped back to my "oInt(+5) because I lose my 0% failure rates otherwise. Still no sign of the Necromonicon and I'm getting sick of seeing Raal's.... Grrrrr!

Which surely means I will die before I get there - probably to the Great Wyrm of Power I can also see. Actually I will probably defeat all the great wyrms and then the serpent of chaos will breathe on me before I can teleport him and the yellow centipede will deal the final blow. That would be a fitting end...
