After my level 16 Balrog Warrior mage (Chaos) died surrounded with Mongbats, I decided to change realm and go more cautiously, this time with an Archon.

Right now I'm level 14 and I'm going well (I know, I'm noob :P).
My enchanted bastard sword has served me well for a while but I'm considering a change for a two handed sword (3d6)

Anyone has tips so my guy survives longer than his ancestors?

Also, how come almost nobody plays warrior-mage? It's my favorite class with assassin and rogue.

If you plan to use meele, and it looks like you do, try to make sure to get more starting blows. 11 dex is way to low to get 2 blows, even with the lightest weapons.

Lucky isn't a very good choice. The increase in drop is not really noticable and especially if you are new you really don't want to have even worse starting stats.

As in all variants, you'll need escapes to counter getting surrounded even if you have spells. Getting staff of teleport should be very high on your list of things to do.

I never tried Warrior-Mage, sounds too much like a jack-of-all-trades. I prefer specialized classes, but that might be only me

On 9.3.2007 03:08 megabibo@hotmail.com wrote:
For escaping, I usually manage not to get surrounded, I always use detect monster to evaluate the situation first. I also have a few scrolls of phase door (wich saved my life a time or two)
Do you know a way to increase my dex?

As for warrior-mage, I like it because I don't like using a mage (too much relying on non-melee combat) but on the other hand I got bored of all my warrior character and got them in risky situations just to put some action in.
Also, arcane magic has some nice spells like detect treasures, phlogiston and detect monsters and at the same time I can use a magic realm that's more fun (Daemon or Chaos)

On 9.3.2007 06:21 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Hm, odd... I never use Staff of Teleport much--they're too expensive to use early, and later on ?oTeleport is more safe (due to lack of fail rates).

The one thing to really keep in mind for Warrior-Mages is that you can switch realms whenever, and you really should use this to maximum advantage. That means:

Starting early with Chaos, for Magic Missile and Mana Burst. Switching at some point to Nature of Detection. Switching at 20's to Sorcery for Haste, and then switching to whatever you find your first 3rd level book in.

On 9.3.2007 21:56 megabibo@hotmail.com wrote:
Yeah I saw that I could switch realm but I didnt do it because I wanted to know, when I change, do I keep all my spells from the previous realm?

Hmn and I still don't know what happens with my Holy avenger mace and how do I update my dump...

I bought a staff of teleportation, along with my potions of speed and detect monster spell, I can evade most dangerous attacks

Here, it seems that I was just inexperienced with maces because after smashing a few enemies my to-hit with my holy avenger is +15...

Now, I think this is my best weapon, if you see one in my house that is better than the one I have right now, tell me.

I found a holy avenger broad sword.

Around floor 8 I killed wormthongue, avenging my previous character. I also killed Lagduf the snage (along with dozens of orcs...) but the immense ammount of enemies forced me to retreat without taking Lagduf's corpse for my collection...
I'm starting to use potions of heroism much

Ok, I finished the yeek cave (And I had to sacrifice a few things of my inventory to get all the items out of it...)
Now, me and my holy avenger broad sword (Man I change weapon every week :P) are going out of the town. I am now at the lower levels of the orc cave.

Are there other towns that are not shown on the world map? Because right now I only see like 3 or 4 of them and they are like really far away (where wilderness will be too dangerous for me)

On 10.3.2007 23:41 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
There are a total of 5 towns: Outpost, Morivant, Telmora, Angwil, and the one up in the mountains (I forget the name). Walking to them (except the one in the mountains) is pretty safe as long as you always follow the road. Water squares are huge hazards.

Hate to tell you this, but you possibly just fell for one of the early-game traps. Boldor's a pain to pain to kill for low-level characters, the rewards (Ring of Light and Dark Resist) is near-worthless, and you actually want to keep him alive so the Serpent has a chance of summoning him. Usually people head to the Angband dungeon when they complete the Wargs quest.

On 11.3.2007 02:08 megabibo@hotmail.com wrote:
I met Boldor randomly and I just killed him, he was not too hard so... Its just the swarms of orcs that forced me to retreat
For the water squares, I saw that after almost getting killed by a cyclop 2 squares away from the town...

I now killed the yeek boss and I'm in the orc cave, I see that not many people in the ladder actually gone there so maybe II should just head directly to angband...

I moved to a new city and started exploring angband.
I have a new pet that I am training, it was a lemure and it has evolved into a nice homonculous.
I will try to go down really cautiously in the dungeon, always staying at floors where I don't risk anything.
