The normal rate of food consumption for a speed 0 character is 20 points per 100 turns. The file xtra1.c suggests that being invisible requires 10 more points per 100 turns. (Invisibility from praying to Melkor costs 15 points per 100 turns.)

Thus the Ring of Invisiblity that Bireld wore increased food consumption by 50% and certainly contributed to his death.

I typically did Fire Arrow spells of 1 mana each. I might not remember well, but I recall that I tried spells with more mana, in attempts to cause more damage, but that this did not help much because 1 mana was sufficient in most cases. (This dump is of a character that never went deeper than Barrow-Downs 3, so that might explain why.)

I also put skill points into Runecrafting, trying to increase the power of the spells without increasing their mana. I would put 50 into Runecrafting, if I ever had a character live long enough. However, I do not recall any effects, positive or negative, of adding skill points to Runecrafting.
