Decided to try the artifactless challenge on this character.
As I see it, having no artifacts is problematic for 3 reasons: damage output, resistances, and speed. Melee damage output can't really be helped, but a pure Nuker should be OK, so I thought Mage. My race choice was down to Klackon or Skeleton or Vampire or Half-Titan, and I ended up choosing Skeleton for RPois and RShards.

Well, normally I'd be upset with a Mimic Quest yielding 0 artifacts, but in this case, I got 2 3rd level books (Death and Craft), so it's pretty decent. Unfortunately, I took Chaos as my first school, which means that if I switch to Craft, then I have 0 detection abilities. Hm. Maybe I shouldn't have sold those Rods of Door/Stair Location and Trap Location.

Btw Dzhang, why'd you bother doing vault? Or did you clear it for exp/loot? I mean you could just fail it to go do killing fields for exp if you wanted. On my berserker I failed straight to killing fields. But not for exp, for the life potion.

How are you going to get around using two rings of speed? The highest boots of speed I've ever personally found were 7, and they were dragon and nice. I guess if you get a solid cloak of the bat that could offset needing two rings of speed. I just find it hard to figure out how you're going to get enough speed (on top of the rest of the issues). The more I think about melee, the more problems it has. But you already thought that out it appears.

A Ring of Speed (+13) or higher is a fairly typical take for me by the late-game, so I was thinking that's about +20 Speed. That, plus if I end up with a School that gives Haste in some form or other (i.e. Ultimate Resistance), and it should be do-able. Elliot and I both about several winners with around that range of speed. Though I won't rule out the possibility of another Speed Ring.
But the other thing I was thinking was annoying was CON. My character's intrinsic limit is 18/110, with a -2 mod due to race/class/pers, that's 18/90. Even with a Crown of Might +3, that's still only 18/120. If I scum for the Resilient mutation, that's *still* only 18/160. So a Ring of Reinforce Muscle (+4) or Ring of CON (+6) might be necessary...
Hm, now there's an idea. I hadn't ever played the Weaponsmith class before, just because it seems so gimpy, but I suppose you're right in that it does lend itself well to Artifactless-play.
Though, if you really want to be strict about not using artifacts, I'd say you shouldn't be allowed to drain artifacts for their essences either, which makes getting Speed essence a PiTA.

I did Vault hoping to find some stat-potions, and also as a test to see how good my character's Superb stealth is at this point . I did find one !oCharisma.
Still not tackling Killing Fields. I can do 40 unresistable damage per turn several ways, but I usually want at least 100 to go in. Chaos Channels with its "Disintegrate" spell would be really sweet, so I'm thinking to wander around Castle to try to find a copy.

Hah, that's more just my personality. I'm kind of an all or nothing person. So if I'm going to cast I am going to only cast 1 magic realm. But as far as logic and actual class merits go, doing high-mage over mage isn't very wise, I'd have to admit.
Disintegrate is pretty neat as a spell. I had a high mage who got about 37 who used that spell a ton. I was just about where I was about to shift to rockets, but it was still like 4 percent failure.
On boots of speed... That newer guy who did calvary found 10, so they'd definitely go that high. But I wouldn't say you could depend on finding higher than 5-7. 12-13 on a ring of speed (though I recently found a 17, which shocked me). But as you said, as long as you can cast haste self, 20ish might be doable.
I'm amused by the idea you couldn't drain artifacts (as weaponsmith). Would you also consider selling artifacts and then shop scumming for good ego items a no go too then? :)
