Got bored yet once again, and started a different build. Decided to try to win with Mage again, only Sexy this time. Starting up with a bit rough, and took several tries before I got anywhere (low HP, low damage, and impatience = many early deaths).

This one's doing decently now, thanks in large part to two items: randart Crossbow from Weaponsmiths, and Anabasis from ?oAcq in Ry'leh.

Started with Chaos as second school, but switched to Craft when 3rd book was in Mimic quest.

Gained to clvl 31 on Killing Fields as typical, but even with Fire Immunity and Haste and Stone Skin, I couldn't do nearly enough damage to kill the Maulotaur.

Woohoo! I picked up Panic-Hit and Magic-Resistance, which are probably the two most important ones for a Mage. Also, Berserk-At-Will is seeing a lot of use, because both my healing spells so far (Nature's Cure Wounds and Craft's Heroism) suck arse for HP/SP ratio.

Nice one on the offensive mutations. Does evil looking tentacles over-write elephantine trunk, or is it a potential 4th? At low levels, all those extra attacks can be a real life-saver, and is sort of blah in the mid-game, but in the end, the extra attacks just means more opportunities for something with elemental sheaths to zap/burn/freeze you. I'm always very sad to get to the point of the game where I realize my nifty scorpian tail is actually detracting value.

Finished up Old Castle, with minimal rewards for a rather difficult fight. Treader of the Dust was there, and Aggravation meant that various monsters bashed down the doors to the Raal's Tome room when I cleared out the lesser wall monsters. Fortunately, I had Passwall, and could manage those, although I had to use something like 7 !oHealing. And then I had to kill some 100's of rats.

The rewards: 4 copies of Nature's Gifts (finally! been waiting for this..), Padre (which was left behind), and Rilia (which was also left behind).

Farmed ancient dragons for a bit off some dragon uniques on Castle 58, and ended up killing Narse, Eibra, and Ancalagon. They dropped the item I was direly needing.. the Hell Collar! With it's RDark and RNether, I could swap out Thror and =oRNether for =oRDisenchant and Shiva's Boots, which allows Sting to Hurin!

Net effect: An increase in speed by 1, and an increase in damage by almost 200, for a measly -2 INT.

Considering I beat down the Great Wyrm of Power with Hurin, rather than a Poison Needle, I don't think it's much of a problem. ^^

I think the main difference might be Hell Collar (+15) and Anabasis (+10), which changes a lot. You weren't wearing the former, and I don't know how quickly you picked up the latter, so that might have been the difference.

Although, I did rely almost exclusively on the Crossbow and Mana Bursts in the early game.

Brand's crossbow is absolutely refusing to show this time around. That's a bit annoying. No Crimson or great randarts for the bow slot either.

And, I've apparently dropped to Evil because I started spamming Genocides and Mass Genos. 2% Fail on Herbal Heals is still pretty good for normal use, but prevents it from being emergency source.

I'd really like Nenya for ImmCold now, so that I can bring my potion stocks along.

Some thoughts;

There are way too many spell slots available to both Mages and Priests. I have something like 70 left, and considering I used everything I needed out of 4 schools (Nature, Chaos, Craft, and Death), that's way too many. Drop the number of spells learnable by 30 or 40, and then increase damage (or maybe set up two Magic Modes, "Normal" and "Maximized").

And another thing that I never really noticed before.. one can cast Heroism repeatedly for the continuous 10HP heal. Not super SP efficient, but better than nothing, and even better than Berserk at low levels (plus doesn't have the nasty Berserk side effect). I guess I didn't expect it because Mindcrafter's Heroism spell won't do that..
