Sorry about not having 'notes to file', but I can't play at work with them turned on. I miss them. Sniff.
He is named Andelune for the wine I've been drinking while playing. HIckup, fifth cup.
Here is a list of stuff I've noticed and would like to mention:
I love the pretty colors at the beginning of the game. I like pretties.
I love the new in game map feature. That absolutely r0x0rs my b0x0rs for wilderness travelnessessess.
While messing around with a high-elf assassin seeing if I could offer any advice for Bandobras I came across Shrada as the weapon seller in Gondolin. That really made me feel good. Thanks Nick. Since then I've run across Gilette and I can't wait to barter with Cuddle. Shrada of the Golden Flower huh... is that golden flower hallucinatory by any chance?! :)
The whole '0' shopkeeper who takes your order is a really neat concept. I placed an order for some TL scrolls and some others and the TL scrolls came through. I placed an order for some speed potions so I hope they show up soon.
I'm sure I've run across more cool things so tomorow maybe I'll remember them... probably not. Heh.
On 31.5.2006 03:38 nckmccnnll@yahoo.com.au wrote: Glad you like it. I had a lot of fun with the shopkeepers.
Have you had any problems with ordering? I came across a weird bug yesterday where I couldn't cancel some of my orders, but then came back later and could.

Coincedently, the ones that wouldn't go away were the ones that came through or were just about to come through. Maybe it means they can't be stopped because it's too late to cancel the incoming inventory? I'm going to do more experimentation with it later.
Uh-oh, bug report: First time FA has crashed on me. I was in west belierand 11 (swampy) and I was in the lower left corner and noticed my speed was changing from -3 to -1 (I was carrying a lot of equ to sell making me heavy) between water and non-water squares, which I assume is supposed to happen. Then I sensed or saw a petty dwarf rogue that was also around a lot of water and he moved toward me and then the game crashed. Luckily I had just saved the game using crtl-s and reloaded just a few turns before the incident. I decided to redo my actions and the same thing happened. The petty-dwarf rogue would move and the game would crash. I checked my monster info and it says that petty-dwarf rogues move quickly. My guess is that it is a speed thing, since nothing else in the swamp seemed to have any problems. So uh, if you're currently in the swamp save the game often and have some sort of teleport handy!
On 31.5.2006 17:45 HallucinationMushroom@Yahoo.egg wrote: I've noticed I can order in any shop and at my home using 'o' like I would in the travelling merchant shop. I have to admit, it would be kinda cool to be able to order from your home... kinda like ordering pizza! :)
I came across something I feel lame even mentioning because it's so little, but I thought it might be helpful to you: On the new in game map, one space east of Ossiriand town doesn't give a purple current location and reads forest danger level 2 but the game reads danger level 7. I'm in a hurry to get to Belegost and Khazud Dum or I'd keep heading east to check on those areas too. North of that spot is fine, as are the other directions around Ossiriand town.
To counteract the bug reports, I remembered something I ran into last night that was cool! I was fighting a druid and he shapechanged into a white ant! It was so cool! That'll really keep me on my toes later 'cause who knows who might turn into what.
Also, listing out the average damage values frees up the litter around my desk of calculations of damage values on post-its and makes my windows calculator useless once again, not to mention keeps me from having headaches. Thank you!
Oh, and about the shield bashing: I gambled that a short-term dexterity boost would make it easier to get more attacks a round earlier increasing my initial survivability. I would definitely choose shield mastery if Druadans didn't have a -1 to dexterity.

Found Alebeard the Tipsy in Khazud-Dum. I'm not sure you want old Alebeard churning out weapons and armor. Heh. For a large discount you can pay him with ale and wine since he's probably too drunk to cross the street!
Mistakenly sold a Broad Axe of Gondolin for 5,000 instead of 25,000. Doh! Well anyway, I was able to stockpile lots of goodies and the ring of skill +17 is super nice coupled with my 1d12 cutlass of slay orc. I hope it helps me get lots of criticals.

As for ordering - that was just slack on my part, I think. I never considered the possibility of trying to order in another shop. Without looking, I'm guessing the home is skipped for restocking, so no pizza I'm afraid.
The map problem would be that the tiles don't form a perfect grid, so if you laid out all the wilderness sections (as the map tries to do) some would overlap. So the current level is being overwritten. I didn't check for that, just hoped it wouldn't happen :)

The real treat was a couple of rooms south of Mim, where some orcs and stone trolls were sleeping. One of the stone trolls coughed up a pair of Birkenstocks of Speed +5! w00t!
Now hasted with these sandals and fury, I should be able to get up to triple speed during any major fight.

The (+32, +32) is rather nice. I think I carried Anduril as my ringwraith and other disenchantment monster weapon. Now that I can't fall down a trap door to Nan Dangortheb there isn't really much point to staying down there... :). Knocked off Orcobal the mighty, a player ghost and Khim along the way. I'm thinking that a narrow focus will give better results. I'm kicking myself for not replacing the Amod Rudh point with Ephil Brandir but at the time I thought that maybe the wilderness would prove too tough and I would need a good dungeon to sploit for stuff.

If this is some well known thing that is lame to use let me know, it does feel a little slippery. I've decided that I won't be using the double/triple blessing/berserkstrength/holy chant thing after all. Deep down it just feels wrong, and I can't betray my own gut, it's the only thing that keeps me alive.

I'm really pushing it not having confusion, blindness or poison resist. I'm kinda in a hurry to get to Nan Dungortheb... I'm really looking forward to all the changes there and the main reason for playing 2.0. I'm too o.c.d. to pass up Nargothrond on the way, however.

Currently falling down cliffs and sliding down avalanches in Nan Dungortheb. I must say this is the first time I ever actually felt like I was in any of my angband characters' shoes before. I can almost feel the pebbles grinding beneath my feet and the overwhelming oppression by the thickness of the forests and the horror of being stuck in spiderwebs. My telepathy only sporadically picks up the many denizens and I find myself being hunted constantly. I kinda regret not coming here first since it would've been much more intense than now since I'm too powered up to be in any real danger... for now. I'm spelunking as fast as I can to get to more dangerous sections so I can enjoy this section more... it's really well done. I've changed my gear around to better immerse myself in the environ and to actually role-play a little. Cheers for 2.0!

I was dashing toward the edge of the cliffs looking for a safe way down when the Nexus hound that was chasing me took advantage of my hesitation in just jumping down willy nilly through a chasm and 'rose me through the ceiling'. This level teleportation took me to Nowhere. I was able to recall home but once there my recall was a little glitchy. I had move down the path to Thargelion 11 and recall back to Belegost and now my recall is working normally again. I was tempted to make a recall point of Nowhere since Nowhere town rocks, but was afraid it would crash my game permanently. Should I defeat Morgoth with Andelune I am definitely retiring there.
I've found out that scrolls of teleport level do this as well.
I also found out that when traveling to Nan Dungortheb from Dorthonion that if the passageway down is too close to the southeastern or southwestern border of the screen at Dorthonion you will slide down the avalanche to be encased in permanent rock. I think this is kinda cool since you're supposed to have recall when you go to Nan Dungortheb anyway. If you were foolish enough to plan on picking up some recall while down in Nan Dungortheb you would starve to death if you had no form of teleport whatsoever.
I was able to use a teleport scroll and everything was okay.

If I try to move it asks me if I really want to jump down the chasm. If I use a turn to just stand still nothing happens. I tried dropping an item and it indeed fell through the chasm and I couldn't retrieve it. I've yet to see any monsters floating on top of a chasm either. A few levels down at 68 I racked up a bunch of artifacts by clearing out Great Ice Wyrms, Ren the Unclean and a nightcrawler which took me by surprise.
Rearranged my setup and was wondering at the data displayed by my weapon values.
Balli says I'm doing 141 against its slays and 65 against other monsters on average per blow. I have a deadliness value of 182 and when I calculate using the help menu formlua I get 38 average per blow for average monsters. 4.5 x 2.82 = 12.69 x 3 = 38.07 Is the damage displayer doing some gymnastics behind the scenes? Like perhaps Druadans have a certain affinity for axes/polearm/sword/hafted or accounting for fighter bonus or putting in likely critical hits?
The Stormhammer is showing 156 for its slays and 56 average damage per blow for other monsters. For throwing it says it does 573 and 223, which seems impossible. I think something is wrong with the damage displayer but I don't know enough about the damage system or coding to figure it out myself.

She wasn't so bad since I went back to my Himring kit that double buffed poison, nether, dark, the elements and had resist chaos. I had just found a potion of resistance so poison was actually at 90% resist... The things I was most worried from Ungoliant. If she had a killer nexus, sound or disenchantment attack I woulda been the toast. I only had to use one healing. The exit out of Dungortheb was shown to me, the screen said... but I recalled out since baddies were creeping in on me so I'm sorry if I missed an opportunity of some sort.
Ancalagon, who I met at Dungortheb 79, was a totally different story. That guy was real tough and actually dropped a bunch of artifacts when he died. I'm eyeing the Axe of Durin for its chaos resist.
Did I say my nerves are shot? I didn't even do my shopping yet.

My gas mileage is relly hurting because off all this stuff I'm carrying, but I can leave behind enough to pick up artifacts if I need to. Still have holes in disenchant, nexus and sound. Trying to get to the bottom of Gaurhoth but I keep finding pretty dragon pits or sparkly vaults. I like pretties.
On 8.6.2006 22:54 HallucinationMushroom@Yahoo.egg wrote: Whee look at me I'm a dragon. Rar!
The balance dragon scale mail is just what I needed for resistances and armor class. I only have a hole in nexus now. Plus it looks cool walking around in dragon armor, no?
Is there any reason I shouldn't be in dragon form? I can tell it messes with my stats a little, plummets my stealth and boosts a.c., and all those things are good for me. Am I going to be able to read scrolls and drink potions without fail and adventure normally?

I'm using Angrist for the damage it is wreaking. reaking? Wreeking? I'm using it for the wig it rips out! I've had no luck finding artifact weapons, only armor. The +4 to int really is nice since I can actually activate all those rods now, but its the great bane of almost everything that really does it for me.
On 9.6.2006 00:28 Bandobras wrote: Wreeking, I like.
The dagger also increases your DEX by 4 and grants you confusion resistance (the same in O and FA). Still, there is something fishy about that weapon...

They required the activation of valinor for element and poison resist, a potion of speed, a couple of scrolls of holy prayer, several stabs with the dagger and a potion of healing and one activation from Nargothrond each. I've yet to even taste a *healing* potion. Three travelling merchants can't be wrong, so they must be yummy. The rod of portals coupled with recharge scrolls were really useful in hunting Sauron down when he got down to 2 stars, the old dog! ;)

I did one last shopping run and picked up a massive amount of holy chant and protection from evil scrolls and just read them all. I don't see the big guy yet but I'm looking for him. On 9.6.2006 18:18 HallucinationMushroom@Yahoo.egg wrote: Winner!
I've already picked up Morgy's stuff and moved to town and bought out all the wine and ale they had for a big blowout. Every townsperson will be drunks tonight!
He was much tougher to bring down this time. I needed 7 *healing* and 3 life potions along with about 4 or 5 healing potions. He dropped me down to around 450 three times with the help of his friend Omarax, and did around 300 points of damage a turn on average. He also summoned Qlzzlyzpup (who lahtonen obviously named) and the Emperor Quylthug which were too stoned too move or do anything productive. I don't see how Shrada survived without *healing* or life... oh yeah, now I remember... dumb luck! Of course, Morgoth was carrying Cubragol to boost his speed. I wish I had a stockpile of *id* to check out the cool treasure. I pulled in this victory at 1,983, 929 turns. That's not so awesome but it roxors my boxors.
The only thing left for me to do is to go back to Nowhere Town and have the citizens erect a statue in my honor.

Did he try to drain your Ash staff? If he would, I'm sure you would club him to death. And now you just stabbed him to death, like an Assassin, with your dagger that _does not_ give nether resist not even slay undead (unless I'm too drunk for source-diving).
Cheers!!!

I was quite tickled to note my ash staff was unsullied, but almost all my rods were drained and my staff of destruction. Luckily I was able to recharge my destruction staff to obliterate all the crap that came to see the prize fight. I almost ditched barahirs ring for another ring of speed +5 when I found Earendil's shield, but I got attached to the double poison and nether resist. It also came in handy slaying Cantoras right before I took on Morgoth too.

I was able to get myself out of the permanent rock by reading a phase door scroll and now I can rustle and bustle along with all the other nowhere town villagers. The three stores and my home I cannot enter, it says 'you see no store here', which is really quite awesome. I'm like in a twilight zone/david lynch type place. At least the drunks are still drunks. On a funny note, I still have protection from evil even after walking all the way from Belegost to Nan Dungortheb to read the teleport level scroll which got me here. By the way, don't read a scroll of teleport level while in Nowhere town or the world will implode. :)

Nice win; I've requested it be marked as such, and 0.2.1 will have a _foolproof_ method for detecting winners from the dump (the current method involves the character notes...). The whole dead or alive thing with Sauron I has been fixed, too.
Maybe you should try a mage now :)
On 10.6.2006 04:39 HallucinationMushroom@Yahoo.egg wrote: Hey thanks for the green. Yeah, I really wish I had notes for this guy... there is something at work that messes it up. It's probably something simple like folder access rights or something.
A mage? Sacrilege. I'm on a mission to beat Morgoth with a shovel in regular angband. I'd try it in your variant but it'd be extremely agonizing to try with the low damage dice and all. If I actually pull that crap off or when I get tired of trying, I'll probably go with a rogue or assassin next. Yeah, a dwarven assassin. Yeah. Yeah thats what I'll do. He'll be the loudest assassin ever. I'm digging it already. No no angband first, with the shovel. Then the loud assassin. Yeah.
