Well I say it's about time I had another decent start. I just traded ranged firing weapons. That was a pretty easy decision. My only problem is weight. I drop one of each spellbook when i reach the level I am going to stay at for a while as well as some of my potions to create an "emergency stash" and keep from being slowed. I need to reach stat gain and find some !oStr badly.

Well I barely had enough for both (61k) but I got a little Int Boost and a Str boost as well. I had to sell some of my !oCCW, but I needed both and was so close. I just had to make one trip down to rebuild my stock. I have found a scroll of acquirement, but I'm not sure if I should wait or use it now... I still need the basic resistances and I'm past 1000'. I could use some more statgain potions, but I have a hunch those won't be falling regularly for a few more levels.

On 23.3.2006 01:11 Isaiah4110 wrote:
Wow that was a rought quest, but not because the worms were hard to kill. I was able to beat them easily with my crossbow. All the other monsters that kept spawning between my quarry and myself made me run out of supplies. Frost Ogres and the like. It was definitely worth it though as I finally got my first Artifact with this character, Cammithrim! I also got a couple more levels and made some money off all the drops from the Ogres and Trolls. Even with those gloves though this character has a weak set of defensive equipment. I could still use more strength (like that's going to happen) because the crossbow is so heavy. I'm not sure if I should take another quest or hang out around this level and cautiously descend while hoping for some better drops.....

Focus on Con and Int (and Str). Also, be on the lookout for better rings (con, int).

Not a bad start. Crossbow is your main weapon (outside of magic), always keep a good stock of bolts with you.

Look to upgrade rings soon, and melee with more resistances. Nice robe!

Keep it to 2000'. You have a better chance of getting an artifact there than at 1000'. If you get junk, you can still sell it for cash.

And your character is strong enough to start stat gain, so long as you use that bow for offense. (!Hero or ?Chant would help.)

Found and bought a potion of Costitution from the Black market for 30k and the ring of con +3 for 4k. They give me a nice HP boost. I've also gained a level. I wish I had some of the dundgeon spellbooks and maybe some more artifacts... Any recommendations as to how deep I should dive?

I'd say you may want to have rConf before you start statgain (in the 1600'-1800'), because of how NPP bumped up dragons, but you would probably be alright if you kept your stock of !CCW high and are careful to TP out ASA things get hairy.

I've found a lot fo artifacts now as well, but I haven't found a single piece of equipment with confusion resistance. That's what's holding me up. I've cleared out a couple dragon pits and I found power drakes could actually do me some damage. I attribute that to my lack of confusion and chaos resistance. Now that I have fully raised all my stats to the maximum base level (18/100) is nexus resistance really necessary?

Grats on Raal's. Nexus isn't "necessary" right now (IMO), but it is still nice to have, as nexus can still do some damage to you, and any time you can reduce damage it's nice. That said, it's probably one of the lowest priorities though (I think).

I find it strange your sword is poison branded, yet does not provide resistance to poison. Hmm.

Wear The Metal Brigandine Armour of the Rohirrim. No contest. You have to have rConf if you want to be that deep. Plus, with rConf + rBlind + 0% fail rate... you are nearly immortal if you play wisely. TP/WoR out of any situation the instant it starts to get dicey. Now that you've spent so much time on this character, nothing is worth dying for.

Other minor bonus of Rohirrim is that you get a bit more STR and DEX, as well as rSound (not so minor). You only lose WIS and CHR sustain and Hold Life. Not that big a deal. Stay away from life drainers. TP if they start to drain you, then WoR back to town and restore your XP.

You *NEED* rConf.

There are some other marginal things... but I'd say you can sell these with little to no regret.

Also... do you really need all those rods of recall? You have the spell, don't you?

And you might want to think about better ammo. Higher base quality, possibly a brand. Unless you're having no trouble dispatching uniques as you are.

On 25.4.2006 17:37 Isaiah4110 wrote:
Although it says my depth is 2050' I've actually been hanging out at 1950'. I haven't had any difficulty with any of the uniques I've seen yet. I did come across a ringwraith when I was all out of !CCW and ammunition so I didn't give him a try. I think the recall spell is in mordekain's escapes because I don't have it yet, so yes, I do the the recall rods, though probably not all 6.

Since I have Elendil do I need to keep the Phial?

Collannon, an amulet, and some better shoes would be really nice finds right now, but I don't think there is anything besides my armor I could switch out right now. I have been debating the use of Rohirrim for a while.

On 25.4.2006 18:22 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
Wise choice on the ringwraith. And yes, Collannon and new boots would definitely be nice.

If you don't have the spell then you might as well keep all 6 rods... if they are taking up a slot right now, it's not going to do any harm if you have as many as possible. I don't see you having a problem with strength right now.

re: The Phial... idunno... I always have a hard time selling it, just cause it seems sentimental for some reason. I'd sell those 8 things I listed first, then if you have 9 more uber awesome artifacts or whatnot then weigh selling the Phial again.

My general rule of thumb when I start finding lots of artifacts is to try to keep everything that would provide another option for a kit, since you never know what *REALLY* awesome artifact you might find that you'd want to use, causing you to shuffle the rest of your kit. But if you get something like a shield of resistance, then you can know to sell it because Anarion is automatically better because it adds the sustains.

I actually like amulets of Regen, just because it means that I can usually regen faster than most other enemies. When fighting a difficult enemy, I like to stone to mud an 8x8 square in the wall (or find one built-in that works), speed up, then just run around until I regain enough HP/Mana to shoot another few bolts at him. Then just repeat until he's dead. Usually I can work it to where I recover faster with regen, whereas without it recovery is usually too slow. Of course, getting regen in your normal kit is optimal and would replace the amulet automatically.

Amulets of Trickery or... some elvish artifact amulet (don't remember the name) are really nice to have, but I've taken regen (possibly stupidly) over those when I felt like I needed it. Sometimes I'll just carry both amulets around to switch out as necessary.

But seriously, use Rohirrim. It's no contest in my book, especially for how deep you are. You'll find hold life somewhere else soon enough as you begin to dive deeper. Because rConf is really the only thing keeping you at 1950'. You could probably hang out around 2400' or so... maybe deeper.

I haven't checked out the dump in detail, so I post this just to answer the last question.

The encumbrance of your movement has only one effect :
You get 1 SP less per lb (if I remember correctly) above the armour weight limit.

In other words (and this I *am* sure of), "encumbrance" is not a consideration at all unless you're a low-level character with very few spell points.

As a mage, gloves without Free Action or a DEX-bonus are different of course. They should not be used ... naturally.

Mage 30 lb

If a mage (for instance) has a total Armour weight of 40 lbs, he has 10 less SP.

From me:
You might want to drop down to around 2500' and see how that feels. Cubragol (and the Arkenstone) start showing up about then. If you find you can't clear levels down there then maybe go back up a floor or two and search for hold life. Or, you could hang out around where you are and hope Evenstar shows up (it starts coming up around 2000'). I think rings of resNether start showing up at 2000' too.

There was a Hydra nest there with 9, 10, and 11 headed hydras in it so I found the nearest stairs and fled the level (it was a tiny level too). I made 2350' my recall depth.
