First NPPAngband character worth posting partway through. Also first character to reach 18/90 INT. The boost to SP and reduction of fail rate from 18/40 (that my higher level vanilla Gnome Mage has) is HUGE! I'm really liking the Quests in NPP. It's much easier to find Artifacts this way. :)

Been getting some nice rewards from completing Moderate Quests. The last one would have been easy if the level hadn't been so full of monsters and uniques with escorts. It got a bit hairy at one point when I had 0 SP and 4 HP and was literally surrounded by Phase Spiders and Fire Hounds. I prayed that my staff of teleport would work, and teleport me to somewhere safe where I could heal and luckily it did! :)

I'm also really loving all the INT boosts in my current kit. I'm up to 18/110, which gives me only a 2% failrate now! The cloak (Holcolleth) that I just got is my first speed boosting item ever, so we shall see how that turns out.

Also, any comments are welcome. Right now I'm switching out the frost dagger and westernesse broad axe for whenever I need rCold. I'm going to need to get rConf and rBlind soon too. I really wish that I could find a !oINT so that I could wear my either rConf or Regen cap, but I'm sticking with the extra SP/smaller failrate for now. Any opinions?

(FYI... this is the farthest I've gotten any character in NPP, and about equal to the farthest I've gotten in V.)

Also, IMO rConf from Thengel is
worth it for you, mainly due to

the fact that quite many monsters
use spells that confuse you.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice! :) I just noticed that my new artifact Cloak provides resistance to Acid, so I'll also be on the lookout for a new amulet. Something providing Regen would be nice. *hint hint, winks at the RNG*

Found a !oINT on the Black Market, sold everything I had to buy it, so now I'm back to 2% failrate. The Moderate Quests have been giving poor rewards lately... well, at least considering my class and equipment. The Telepathy Cap would be nice, except I'm a Mage and can see any monster in the dungeon whenever I want. What I need is something with rBlind and rConf. I also could use a something "of Resistance", so that I could knock out all the resistances at once. The most recent quest reward was the Double Chain Mail of rCold. Again, it's a resist that I am kinda missing, but I can't wear it since it encumbers my movement. I would even take a Robe of Resistance over any of that stuff.

Also, I'm in town right now, and I've finally found one of the 5 special spellbooks, unfortuantely, I don't have 100k AU to buy it, so I'll just have to wait to get lucky later.

I just got done with a quest that took about 4 hours. All of the Maia (which somehow got logged as aiar... they were Orange A's) were resistant to all my magics. It would have been hopeless if I hadn't found that uber-Crossbow and a bunch of enhanced bolts. I also would have been toast were it not for my equipment INT bonus and the rConf on my helm.

The Metal Scale Mail of Elvenkind was a REALLY nice pickup. I got it from a Mind Flayer on the same level as the quest (1550'). I was hoping the extra resistance would be against blind, because that is my one gaping weakness at this point.

Anyway, my rant for this update is again on the quest rewards. At first I was hoping for an armor of resistance from the quest reward, but when I got the elvenkind, I didn't know what to wish for (so to speak). However, I was disappointed to recieve simply a branded weapon. The rewards were so much better when I was at a lower level, why has the value of the reward decreased as my level has increased? Where have the artifacts gone? (Or should they have not been there in the first place?)

Currently Statgaining at 1900'. I found a new artifact, Osondir... but it was just barely worse than my current axe of Westernesse, so I sold it and stuck with the +1 to STR/DEX/CON. I'm soooo close to 0% failrate. Still missing rBlind. Regen would be nice too. I also want to get rPois before I dive past 2000', so hopefully I find a source of that by the time I finish statgain and resume questing.

Found a second sword of Turin, which makes for a rather odd coincidence. Anyway, the Random Number God granted my wish for rPois in that sword, as well as Regen. I'm still looking for rBlind (rNexus, rNethr and HLife are next on my wishlist) but rBlind is the priority. With my newly acquired 0% failrate *beams proudly* if I could get rBlind and play wisely, Aingalant XI should go a loooong way. Right now my shield is doing very little for me, my amulet is basically convenience so I can see monsters before activating the Phial or casting Spear of Light. It would be really nice to replace these pretty quickly here.

Now that you have res_Poison,
you can dive below dlvl 39. Just be carefull with the blindness and get more !oCureCritical. I always carry around 25 at those depths to conserve Healing whenever I can. Just hang around and hunt for Ancient Dragons. Sooner or later they will drop a better shield and hopefully The Iron Helm 'Holhenneth' for both res_Confusion and res_Blindness. (With Detection activation to boot)

Also, more important than anything else right now is for you to work on your CON.

Good Luck.

Cure Serious will have to suffice then. You might want to spend some time around dungeon levels 32-35 to find more stat potions and Healing Potions and better rings of Con while you wait for more Cure Critical to show up.

RINGIL! I got this and I was in SHOCK! I'd heard people talk about it on RGRA but was completely floored when I found it myself... and at such a low level (it seemed to me at least) too! Dude... it's 2:30 AM and I'm so excited I don't know how I can sleep... but I need to so I can get up for work in the morning... *grumble grumble*

Downside-I need to find a new source of rPois
Upside-HUGE Speed and Melee boost! +15 Speed normal, +25 Speed unhasted. I feel nearly invincible when I haste myself, cast Shield and Resistance.

Question: Will I find a better weapon as a High-Elf Mage? I know according to Jeff Greene's "Artifact Power Rating" Ringil is placed fifth... but is it the best for me?

On 11.11.2004 13:22 anssi.ramela@myy.helia.fi wrote:
No. You won't find a better weapon until much later. Once your speed without Ringil is +25, then the Great Axe of Eonwe or the Mace of Disruption 'Deathwreaker' are better weapons due to Immunities/resistances/activation/damage.

Now, you should take it easy, go to dlvl 40. Your high speed should keep you safe if you are even moderately careful. Sooner or later you'll find a Ring of Resist Poison on the floor (item depth 40) once you have that you can proceed with hunting Ancient Dragons for stat potions. If you wan't to be extra careful, go to dungeon level 33-35 immideately and hunt Mature Dragons and Trolls for stat potions. When you have your constitution maxed you can safely dive deeper to look for items that help you get your CON total even higher.

Remember that you can replace the +2 INT ring with a ring of Resist Poison or Constitution.

Good luck!

Thengel is more important than
Hammerhand especially since it aggravates. Res_Blind is more useful than +3 Speed and res_Shards, IMO. Just remember to Haste often or all the time! :-)

Try to get some scrolls of Teleport or Destruction or Teleport Level. Since you can't be blinded or confused you can always read a scroll to save your self, but while you are stunned from sound something else you have 15 minimum fail rate on spells. Having some scrolls ensures your safety even while stunned. Once you have res_Sound&Blind&Confusion, nothing can interfere with your spells. That is your goal, once your spells are always 0%, you can only die to your own mistakes and really, really bad luck.

Good luck

Just been collecting artifacts. I started questing again now that I'm almost done with statgain at clvl 38.

I'm powerful enough now to take out nests and pits of "d"'s... well... one d at a time. They provide lots of good stuff. I'm now having to squelch even good equipment, since it's useless to me, and isn't even worth hauling back to town to sell. Speaking of selling, I'm really bummed that the armory is capped at 10k gold for selling stuff back. I want to sell my armors of resistance, but maxing out at 10k just seems like robbery. Is there any real reason that there even is a limit to how much you can get for selling equipment?

As always, suggestions would be appreciated. :)

Found my first ring of speed! (+5) Now I have to choose between +5 speed and +3 CON. The difference is 95 HP and +12 Speed vs. +17 Speed.

IMO, the HP is more important at the moment, so I'd wear the Con ring until you get your CON to 200 without it. But its nice to have one if you get a quest where speed is an issue. Once you are as fast as or faster than the monster, having more HP is alot better than having some more speed.

You can dive deeper since you have confusion, blindness and poison resisted. You'll get those last stat potions faster from hunting Ancient Dragons and you'll find better equipment faster too.

You can go ahead and sell those resistance armours, IIRC you won't get much more than 10K even if the shopkeeper had a bigger cap. IIRC resistance gets you around 13K at best. You can sell the gloves too, except maybe Fingolfin.

Just defeated Saruman. REALLY tough close battle, but it was worth it. My CON was reduced, knocking me down to under 600 HP (a 100 HP hit), and at one point I was down to only THREE hp. When Saruman got low on HP he would either teleport me away, or teleport himself away. I'd then cast teleport self until I landed in a place decent enough to get to him and escape the minions he summoned. For the start, I just melee'd him with Ringil (gosh, I love that sword) but then I found he would teleport me away before I got close, so I tried various magic attacks from Raal's... which I keep forgetting that I have. I eventually settled on Rift, find him, Rift, find him, Rift, find him. Just when I thought I had him, he telelported himself into a vault, and so I ended up cleaning half of that out while attacking him... hehe.

Anyway, it was worth it. Now, since he fell in a vault, I'm not sure what I got from him and what was from the vault. The two biggest things were Hurin's Axe and Gold Dragon Scale Mail. This is my first time wearing dragon scale mail, so I look forward to trying out the breath attack. :D It also happens that the previous armor I was wearing was Elvenkind, and I was only wearing it for the res_sound, so that my spellcasting would be perfect. Oh yeah! That reminds me! Diving down to get to Saruman (it was a difficult quest) I found Holhenneth, and the res_blind+res_conf was what allowed me to switch out the elvenkind armor I was wearing for the res_blind for elvenkind armor that had res_sound.

Anyway, now I'm at lvl 39, 2500' (halfway to Morgy :) and just passed 2 mil exp. I also have 1.2 mil AU, and probably twice that in equipment stored in my house. I'm also all maxxed out in stats, for the most part. The only stat that isn't maxxed is WIS, but that's at 18/91 and doesn't really affect my mage anyway.

Now, since I'm looking to dive further, should I perhaps wear the ring of res_nether instead of the ring of CON +4? Also, what are the pro/cons of res_sound vs. res_chaos vs. res_nexus vs. res_shards?

On 16.11.2004 15:36 wrote:
Wear the ring of CON, but keep the res_Nether ring with you as a swap.
sound is most important to keep your spell casting perfect, chaos is next since soon, big chaos attacks and Chaos Hounds will be more common. Nexus and Shards are pretty neglible in importance since they don't do big damage and the side effects are pretty unimportant. IMO your kit is at the moment as good as it gets from what you have now.

Top 25! I'm on page 1 of the NPPAngband Ladder at Lvl 41 with 3 mil exp! Yippee!

The last quest/dive was rather successful as I netted 5 Artifacts, 4 of them coming from Great Ice Wyrms. Thranduil is nice and I'm wearing it over Holhenneth because I have another source of res_Conf, and it takes care of res_Blind while giving me Telepathy. Now I'm not casting Dectect Monsters every step... now it's just every other step. ;) The Arkenstone and Evenstar are nice because they both give me HLife, which was a hole I had before. What exactly does HLife do? Either way, I can safely switch out either one of them since they both protect me from that. They also both have res_Lite which was previously a minor chink in my resistances. I'm still working out what my kit will be for my next trip downstairs, as I'm trying to juggle everything to keep my resists and have 18/200 CON.

I said earlier that the Quest was rather fruitful... well, this is true in that on the quest I gained 5 artifacts, but to be quite frank, the quest reward (Crown of Serenity) sucked. I've been taking only difficult quests and it seems that the moderate quests gave me better rewards (artifacts and such) when I was at a lower level than these difficult quests. (Though I did rather enjoy taking out Great Ice Wyrms with Ringil and Rift. :D) I'm going to take a moderate quest this next time and see what sort of reward it turns up.

Just found 3 more artifacts from a 'd' nest. Isildur's armor was better than Rohirrim's, and Belthronding was better than Bard's bow. These additions cover res_disenchant and res_nexus. The only things I'm missing now are res_shards and feather falling (both minor), and I use =oRes_Nether as a switch with Barahir's ring (which I basically use as a =oRes_Pois on steriods cause of the +1 to all stats.) Current kit at 41/2900':
a) Ringil
b) Belthronding
c) Barahir
d) CON +6
e) Carlammas (Evenstar as switch to Restore Life)
f) Arkenstone
g) Isildur
h) Colannon
i) Elvenkind (res_Chaos)
j) Thranduil
k) Cambeleg
l) Avarri
Unhasted Speed = +14

Any advice on how far I can safely dive with this sort of kit/stats?

you could go as deep as dlvl 98, as long as you are carefull and TP Away/Banish/Mass Banish/*Destruction anything threatening.

But if you want to stay at a depth where you can handle the in depth baddies, I'd say about dlvl 65. Really it's hard for me to say, I always have a gut feeling about these things. Anyway hangin out at dlvl 65 and hunting Great Wyrms of the basic elements should be safe since you have the Resistance Spell, Rift, and Raal's in general. I love Explosion.

If you take those *Healing* potios and always have Resistance + Haste active you should be able to Rift/Chaos Strike the Mouth down.

Also, remember that you can use Door Creation to prevent the mosters attacking you with ranged attacks while you heal your self with Cure Critical/Serious potions. It helps conserve Healing effects.
