Totila does about as much damage as martial arts when it was at 3 blows/round, and defintely more at the current 4 blows. However, martial arts can set a monster into a confusion lock, so Cuddle is alternating between the two depending on the likelihood of monsters casting or using confusion on him. My assessment is that martial arts is a little inferior until level 20, and much better until stat gain has progressed some. It is also much more forgiving as respect to stats-- At one point, strength was nexus-scrambled down so that Cuddle only had 2 blows/round with Totila, but Cuddle was ok because he could go to almost entirely martial arts.

One of the nice things about martial arts is that one can fight some monsters that would ordinarily be out of one's league. Quite a while ago, Cuddle went down the stairs and was looking straight at Lorgan, Chief of the Easterlings! Ordinarily, I'd have aborted that level immediately, but since Cuddle was on the stairs, Cuddle decided to give it a try. Lorgan got confused, and never got out if it. Similarly, Cuddle took down Lokkak, Erotas, and Ulfast-- at the same time-- by taking advantage of martial arts confusion. It was like a cheesy HK action flick scene :)
