Well, i'm posting this a little early because I've never had a char with such a low strength survive at all. I thought "Everyone keeps mentioning Death High Mages, but I haven't seen one yet, so I'll make one. Hey, if Im a death high mage, wouldnt spectre be great with that?" Well, that's basically a -11 strength or so. I have a bunch of bonuses, and i'm at 4. Took me about 15 tries to get one off the ground - and it was due to an awesome find - perfect for him. The randart dagger with +2 attacks. The armour gives a nice speed bonus too - but I lose that as soon as I start picking stuff up.

Eh... doesn't Spectre kind of defeat the point? I mean, Death gives you "Wraithform" at the end.. I suppose Pass-through-Walls is useful for low levels too though.

Whoa... what the heck!? How did you pick up that many great items when you're Clvl 22 and Dlvl 23, with highest unique killed being lvl 22?

j) an Iron Crown of Might [0,+10] (+2)

One of those would be about average luck, and 2 I'd consider pretty great start. And you haven't even gotten the ?oAcq from the Arena...

On 25.2.2006 15:46 adamsherring@hotmail.com wrote:
most of those items were from the bm or armour shop. I scummed for about 400 game days when I had money. "Ray Storm" was a fantastic early drop that allowed me live at all. I forgot to mention that I lost the phial early on (not a bad artifact to lose), so I did the dark elven quest and got an ?oAquirement from that and picked up that armour. The gloves, hat, and shield were all in the armour shop, and the amulet and ring were in the bm.

After I got that knife and a bit of money, I saw some good stuff in the bm and gambled until I had enough. This char has the luck like my first char did at gambling. I got enough to buy something, and with the money left over, I "let it ride" and ended up with about 150k. After that, I decided to sit and scum the shops until the money was gone. And then it was. But the only reason I lived at all was the very early drop of "Ray Storm"

O_o Ok, I will admit that I did not notice the Day 428 the first time I looked.

How are you making so much on that gambling? The only thing I could figure out to consistently win at was Monster Arena, due to the computer's kind of messed up odds system. Everything else is pretty much the standard computerized casino games, which means no chance of winning in the long term.

On 26.2.2006 00:54 adamsherring@hotmail.com wrote:
No, the "In between" game doesn't have odds that equal the output. The output is 4:1, but the odds are determined by the first two dice that are rolled (you need in between. Or cards. or whatever). I've noticed that some of my characters are "really" lucky with it and some aren't. To make a lot of money on that one you need a good capital - maybe 8 times what you're betting. Basically you can generally make a little each time. I had one trip to town where I went and won 20 or 30k, went and bought some scrolls, went back, won 20 or 30k, and so forth. Its really lopsided. Of course, I've had chars who lose every time. But definatly, "In between" is the one to go with. The other events' payouts aren't even cloes to worth it.
This char has spent his time basically going back to the same level and grabbing stuff to sell, selling it, and gambling it to win or lose, then scumming the bm for decent items.
I knew that with 4 str (and I found out 88/100 life rating), he just cant survive without superior gear. I spent about 3 1/2 out of the 4 hours I've played doing that tactic. I Just cant rush this one. I'm not sure if its in this dump, but I just took out Jaian, and he dropped Anduril, so I have that to look forword to (im too weak to use it right now - effectivly, anyway).

Chance to win in between:
If two or three are the same, you loose. Chance for getting three different dices is 9/10*8/10 = 72/100

then you have a one in three chance, that your dice is the middle one, that's 72/100*1/3 = 72/300 = 24/100 = 24%

so the chance to win is actually worse than 1:4 a little bit. Or do I miscalculate here?

On 26.2.2006 07:13 adamsherring@hotmail.com wrote:
Well, I never went out and figured out the math for the actual stats on the "in between", but I do know that a few times when I gamble I get a better return than 1/4 (usually 1/3), but as always, the odds will prevail eventually. Sometimes I can get it winning on a streak(up to 150 or 200k from 20k), and sometimes I lose everything (60k to 0). But place that against the odds of every other game (which i've tried - almost as fast as dropping gold on the ground and walking away).
All I know is that the "In between" has the best payout/odds of all the gambling, I've tried the others, and all they do is lose money - i've even won top prizes in them. The odds are just too much of a longshot to make anything useful. But going into the "in between" gambling with a little capital can help you out more times than it will blow your money.

On 27.2.2006 01:08 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:
Hm... the rules say in-between is played with 12-sided dice though, but in practice it seems to be 10-sided.

Chance for three different numbers on 12-sided: = 12/12 * 11/12 * 10/12 = 0.764, and 1/3 of that for winning is 0.2546, which is slightly in your favor. Maybe that's why it got changed to d10 sometime between Kangband 2.8.1 and Hengband 1.6.2

When I booted up an old winner to test this though, it seems that I don't actually win. Betting 1 gold and letting it roll for about 3 minutes, I ended up down about 50 gold (I had my eyes closed as I rolled, and stopped randomly, so there shouldn't be any selection bias). I do seem to vaguely remember Lucky characters having better luck than expected playing slots too.. thouh this could be just coincidence from my one lucky character who did so.

And I disagree about the evaluation of the other games. Monster Arena is very much skill-based, and if you know all of the monsters strengths and weaknesses like the back of your hand, you can win pretty consistently.

Got bored and started playing entro again. Have two chars to go back to - this one and a balrog magic eater that may be promising.

Was touch and go until I found Zantetsuken - so I could finally melee some guys. Found several other goodies and did the cloning pits.

Check out 'Battlemech' - I'll be wearing it as soon as I can find something with rShards (I can switch out my armour for Arduvi, but then I lose rConf)

Found Hellfire tome - no Necronomicon yet.

Some questions though - Quickthorn's damage output is higher than Zantetsukens, but is the "sharpness" of the katana worth it enough to keep it? The damage output is about 75 higher.

And how am I supposed to beat undead creatures other than melee? Anyone try this with a Death highmage before? I can't use vampirism true (which is fantastic on everything else) on them so I've stopped at the Greater Balrog (I have no clue how i'll beat the iron lich)

Anyway - thoughts and help are welcome and appreciated.

The obvious answer is not at all. If the last book doesn't contain any undead killing skills you might be out of luck. Isn't death the only realm to get genocite? Well then that would be the undead handling spell for your lategame then.

It has been shown that high mage using melee as the main damage source is possible, but that for sure isn't the only way. Earlier in that character you said how everyone was talking but not playing death high mage. Well, I don't think you are really playing death high mage either. You're playing a very weakened warrior with some support spells. At least that's what your equipment looks like:

a Calcite Ring of Damage (+21)
The Torque of Boromir (+0,+16)
a Set of Leather Gloves of Slaying (+6,+7)

So as I usually try to play as close to the class as possible... My suggestion would be changing more to the way of the mage. Should you decide to do so, there are several options available, for example bigfoot or sting, battlemech and +cons ring.
Vampirism true seems to do enough damage as the main damage source until you find the 4th book and the hellfire spell gets available. You would also have to carry high powered rods to use the drain mana spell on. You can regain 50 mana from one rod of *balls.

If you want to continue on the way of the warrior, Slayer should beat both Zantetsuken and Quickhorn?!?

Yeah seems like genocide is the way to go. Although you could give it a shot in melee when you get Vampire form.
As for the damage of sharpness, iirc it's easiest to add another 1/6'th to the multiplier (as there's a 1 in 6 change for x2, and if that succeeds another 1 in 6 chance to increase that to x3, etc).

I'm not high enough level for genocide - so if I abandon melee right now I have no way of dealing with undead & demons. Slayer *could* do more damage, but I wont find out, as it's too heavy for me to use. Vampirism true does kill just about every living creature for me, which is great, especially for the uniques. It makes them real easy to deal with.

I *hate* when that happens to a mage ...
