(clevel:20, dlevel:12) Ok, I know I was going to take a break, (and I still am, probably starting this weekend) but I really did want to run a follow up to the Imitator I did a while back, so I decided to do that first.

Beastman, of course, because its pretty much all I play, and decided to go for either Harden to the Elements, or Chaos Patron, whichever came first. Patron showed up on the 5th or so try, so that's where he's going. Didn't try for an Augmentation at clevel 2 (though Chardhros is big on those), but got one at level 3, anyway. Haven't gotten another one yet, though.

Too early to post, blah, blah, blah, but look at what Doom Quest 1 provided! A randart shield with +4 speed AND an amulet of reflection AND the crown of telepathy (not true telepathy, but close) AND his first capture ball, an item of huge value to Imitators. Plus, he made level 20 during the quest and Chardhros gave him Resilient on that level-up, so life is really good.

(clevel:26, dlevel:24) Sometimes the RNG just gives you a big "thumbs up". That doesn't mean it won't kill you later, but for whatever reason, its clearly in a good mood that day.

Got a ring of FA from the BM, which allowed getting the scroll of acquisition from the Arena. A quick trip to the Dark Cave netted Galadriel's Phial, so the Dark Elven Lord quest came next. It produced a nice longsword of pattern which replaced the broad spear of prism he had been using. Plus an un-IDed ring sitting on the ground proved to be rPoison.

Vault was a breeze (no hounds! I can't remember the last time that happened) and Ishikawa Goemon was there as well. Cost potions of speed and healing, but Goemon went down, producing the Super Katana! Ooh, Sting vs. Zantetsuken. Tough call. The BM produced the ring of damage right after, which made Sting's extra attacks more valuable. Sting has SI and FA, so it was the winner, and saw Copycat up to the Dark Elven Sorcerer in the Arena (need more speed or a better ranged attack to take him on).

Ulwarth was the piece of cake dlevel 24 random monster and Robin Hood was tagging along with him. One of them, dunno which, dropped the Soulsword! Wielding it, he has all resists covered except rLight and rBlindess and the offense to take on the Cloning Pits.

A couple potions of resistance would be nice before trying that, along with maybe 5 more potions/charges of speed, a few more healing potions, and, ideally, 20-30 more points of AC. I'd say the odds of me waiting until I've got all that stuff before trying it is maybe 20%. Isildur+a staff of speed would be really handy right now, probably handy enough to attempt the Pits.

Used the Soulsword briefly until I realized he'd have to swap his rings to get FA and rPoison, so he's sticking with Sting for now.

The dlevel 38 monster proved to be Jack of Shadows, just about everyone's favorite "toughest unique for its level" candidate. Since Copycat did indeed have rDark, he stuck around long enough to try a staff of starlight on Jack (didn't hurt him at all) and for the fun of imitating one of his darkness storms back at him. Jack doesn't have rDark, it seems, so imitating Darkness Storms back at him could be a viable strategy for defeating him... for a character with healing to burn and speed of +20 or better. Neither of which apply to Copycat.

Heading into the Cloning Pits now.

Chardhros has gotten his stat-granting act into gear. 3 more Augmentations between levels 21 and 30. Might have to get rid of him soon, though I love magic resistance and Resilient.

Cloning Pits done. Went smoothly until with only the Dagons and Gachapins left among the bottom monsters, the last Dagon summoned a pack of Bykhee and they started chain summoning more demons, topped by a Lesser Balrog. Final kill count of Bykhee was higher than the final fire ant kill count.

Stupid Bykhee drained his STR from 18/18X down to 18/30, cutting his damage output by over 25%. Plus, mopping them up took resources, and he only had 1 potion of speed left for the Gachapins. Got lucky and managed to kill 2 while the potion was still running, but the 3rd summoned a bunch of hydras and got away. Wasn't sure how I was going to kill it with a max average damage output under 200/round, no haste, and no resistance potions for doubled rPoison.

Expected to painfully whittle it down with crossbow and melee, a star at a time while occasionally fleeing and mopping up hordes of hydras, but got a break. The Gachapin teleported to the far right side of the middle hallway, behind the last two Ultimate Dungeon Cleaner guardbots (which were somehow still asleep). The Dungeon Cleaners are higher level, so Copycat took off his stealth gear and ran around in the Queen Ant's old room until the Dungeon Cleaners woke up. The Cleaners then beat the crap out of the Gachapin until it was at 1 HP. He then tunneled through the wall and flew over the chasm, attacking the Dungeon Cleaners until the Gachapin landed a steal attack and teleported itself away (didn't want to kill the Gachapin and have the Cleaners clean up the loot). He then backed across the chasm, picked off the cleaners with missle weapons, and hunted down the 1 HP left Gachapin.

Awesome haul: Nain, Isildur, Anarion, Thranduil, Mook, and Iron-Ball, plus some randart armor and various other interesting pieces. First staff of speed, too.

(clevel: 37, dlevel: 56) Lems isn't so bad when you've got a Hell Wyrm along to tank for you. Killed Dionysus, Hastur, and Strygdwallir on that level as well, and Sleipnir was also there and was nearly dead... and then it was gone. Banished by a Lems earthquake? Dunno. It was just gone all of a sudden. Odd.

Anyway, Dionysus dropped Aglarang, and Lems dropped Sacred Knights, the ring of speed (and Haste!), and Caspanion.

I'm now doing the usual mid-game mental gymnastics of trying to cover all the critical resists while getting full value out of the nifty equipment he's picked up. Providing rNether, rChaos, and rDisenchantment makes the Soulsword awfully hard to put down, but he has multiple other choices with better damage output.

The Iron-ball is the most intriguing. (25d4) plus wicked criticals does amazing damage. Not enough to use it with those huge penalties, perhaps, but a Samurai or a Craft magic user with Mana Branding could really shred with that thing (lets see, 62.5 base average damage times 3 for a *GREAT* critical times 5 for lightning eagle is 937 damage. Wow!).

After much pondering, I've decided on swapping in Nain, Caspanion, Anarion, the ring of speed, and Sacred Knights for Soulsword, Isildur, the randart shield, the ring of rPoison and Heroism, and the amulet of reflection.

To-hit drops a bit, but overall damage should be up (on average. There are a zillion different match-up combinations that work out in various ways), AC is up slightly, but Reflection is lost, and he gains +6 speed.

On 25.2.2006 03:27 elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Oh, and he loses rNether, but gains rDark. Seems like a bad trade-off, but Jack of Shadows has been popping up all over the place and is a major threat without rDark.

Finding Jack of Shadow's cloak or the Palantir (or another usable item with ESP) would allowing swapping the crown of the magi with rNether for Thranduil. That's the current objective.

(clevel:39, dlevel:60) After grasping the wyrm breath scumming trick and using it to one-hit kill the Arena greater titan, Copycat went out and got a Venom Wyrm (definitely a poor substitute for the Hell Wyrm, but but better than nothing against the upcoming greater balrog). Using the two of them as necessary, Copycat ripped through the Arena monsters up to the Fenghuang.

Had the easiest fight ever against the Reaver. First move, successful double-revenge firebreath, second move, regular firebreath, and that was it for the reaver. It got just one more and used it to curse.

The double-revenge opening did fail against the Shambler, but the failure didn't cost the imitate, and the Shambler used the move to just step forward, so it wasn't a problem.

Followed that up with close to my easiest ever run through the Castle. Made sure he started with two memorized fire breaths (doesn't take that long to get them in the yeek caves), teleported until he was in the room with the greater titans, fried them both, and then ran through the rest of the monsters. Toughest random monster was a Durahan, but nothing really slowed him down. I was kinda hoping the Fallen Angel would use invulnerability so I could copy it, but no such luck.

Castle loot was terrible. Only items worth keeping were Boromir (which was nice) and some mushrooms of restoring. No other artifacts, and everything else was sold. Even had Go-Go already, so just a scroll of acquisition.

The scrolls of acquisition and *acquisition*, read in R'lyeh, produced the Glaive, so things are good.

Ran into a nice vault on level 64 with a (4d5) longsword sitting in it. Unfortunately, Dworkin, Bleys, Caine, Habu, Bast, a GWoL and a Star-Spawn were there, too, along with various other monsters.

Killed a bunch of dragons, Dworkin, Bleys, It, and another unique I'm forgetting, plus battered Habu, but couldn't put him away. That cost Copycat pretty much all his supplies, but he was only half-way through the vault. Tthe Star-Spawn was asleep, but sitting on the sword and attacking it without supplies seemed suicidal, so he recalled.

While the lost sword proved to be Excalibur (double drat!) he managed to pick up Frakir, Julian, Incanus, and Tetsu-Geta of Flame, so it wasn't a complete loss.

(clevel: 45, dlevel: 72) No, not dead. Just progressing slowly.

His pet Great unclean one (currently in the capture ball) has been a huge boon. Copycat was fighting a Cthulu unique (the level 70 Spider one) with the unclean one helping out, when Copycat had to run and heal. The unclean one stayed put and kept slugging it out with the unique while Copycat healed. By the time he got back, the unclean one was still at full health, while the unique was down another star. That's a helpful traveling companion.

His early mutations were (resilient and resist magic), but its been pretty much downhill since then (moronic, joint ache, and silly squek). At least nothing really bad has come up yet.

Found cloak of Jack of Shadows, which is wonderful, those randart gauntlets with rDisenchantment, Fingolfin, and, best of all, Ringil! Things are really looking good, though it will take a little more thinking to figure out his new best equipment combination.

Upgraded (IMO) from the Great Unclean One to a Wyrm of Many Colors and have been enthusiastically imitating its various breath attacks. Totally destroyed a Sky Drake with acid breath attacks, which was fun, as those things are horrific under normal circumstances.
