(clevel:34, dlevel:37) Tourist power!

Since Tourist's skill with all weapons and Double-Wield can go up to 8000, they're surprisingly good at it.

Found the whip of Bolshoi very early on Lousy, and it, along with mutations for a beak and a scorpion's tail, saw him through most of the early levels, until Gachapin (Bolshoi was wonderful for taking him out) dropped Musashi, which gives you a bonus to your dual-wielding as long as its in your right hand. Most of the post-Gachapin, pre-Cloning Pits leveling was done dualing wielding Musashi and Werewindle.

While dual-wielding is going nicely so far, I'm looking forward to switching back to a single weapon now that Thorin is available (courtesy of the Cloning Pits), plus it would let him trade his gauntlets of Genji for those awesome randart gauntlets (+4 STR, DEX, and CON).

That cursed randart sword in the Museum is one of the scarier items I've ever seen. Not many flags so it doesn't look like much, but its nasty. While, yes, it has a slay (giants, I think, but I don't remember), the big to-hit and to-dam penalties make it useless in combat. It also carries the TY curse, which is quite bad, but what really makes it horrific is that its permanently cursed. Perma curse + TY curse means any character that accidentally wielded it would pretty much be done, regardless of level or power.

Rinaldo was kind of a pushover for the level 34 quest. When he died, Pokey got bloodcursed and statue-ified, but the summoned monsters were fire ticks and Kuokos, and the like, so Pokey survived the ordeal quite easily.

(clevel:39, dlevel:50) Songmaster is found! I think the original Songmaster would have much preferred using this superb weapon against the Serpent rather than that hazardous Death Scythe. Oh, and the PYEC is pretty cool, too. On the character screen the text is this neat bright green that I don't think I've seen used for anything else.

Dave, the ring of speed was courtesy of the Cloning Pits. The Cloning Pits went pretty smoothly (actually, it was a breeze until the very end when all of the regular monsters were cleared out, and the only thing left was an extremely sound sleeping Shuten-Douji. He required more healing potions to kill (4) than the rest of the Pits combined (3).), but it looked like the best treasure was going to be Winblows and the arrow of Bard, until the very last little un-IDed treasure dump (the Its) produced Thorin, Orcrist, and that ring of speed. Tried dual-wielding Glamdring and Orcrist, just for fun, but he switched to single wielding after that.

After that, failed Baphomet when Pokey accidentally went down a shaft instead of some stairs to enter the level. I saw who it was (IMO, he's a tough draw for that level) and I decided not to even try. Looking back, I should have at least given it a shot, but at least he's alive.

Old Castle started out really rough as Pokey's bad stealth woke everything up, and the Lesser Titans summoned a small army, including Fafner, before Pokey could even kill a single titan. Pokey teleported away, and then hunkered down defensively as both greater titans and the iron lich arrived at his hidey-hole at the same time. Using different tactics, Pokey thrashed all 3 of them at nearly the same time, and romped through the rest of the Castle.

What did he do differently? Better positioning helped some, as did his scroll of glyph of protection, but the real difference was the awesome power of "Grow Mold". At shallow depths, it creates sad yellow and hairy molds, which do little more than take up space. In the Old Castle, however, a large percentage of the molds you summon are Death Molds, which are buzzsaws if you try to melee them. Since the monsters aren't bright enough to stand back and use ranged attacks on them, the Death Molds had a field day and Pokey had an easy trip.

(clevel:41, dlevel: 56) While I haven't used every weapon yet (I STILL have never found Slayer, Grrrrr.), from those that I have used, I'm willing to argue that Songmaster is the best weapon in the game. Slay evil, vorpal, nice speed bonus, and great damage make it an amazing all-around weapon. Just ask the Yamata, which Pokey recently squashed. Its probably the mid-range unique I'm the most afraid of, too, but Pokey handled it without any problems.

Killed the GWoP with dual-wielded poisoned needles, and, for the 2nd character in a row, got the killing blow with less than 100 hp left. Pokey rested and then stood outside the Arena for a bit, with me dying to get my hands on another Create Artifact scroll. Eventually, the part of me that knew it was suicide to go after the Babble that way overcame the part greedy for the scroll.

I don't think its impossible for a Tourist to do, in part because I believe Victor did it with a great bow and a pair of rings of extra shots. I tried that route, using an archer, no less, and got schooled by the Babble, so I'm still not sure its the best way to go. Dunno what Pokey would enchant at the moment anyway, so there's certainly no hurry to figure out the best plan.

I think that was me, with Wytham, wielding Belthronding. I got really lucky though, because I got a *HUGE* crit on the Babble with my first or second shot that brought it down to like 1/4 HP, and put it in fear. As always, remember Fire Immunity and Reflection, and good luck!

Songmaster does indeed rock!! Is it the best weapon in the game? I dunno about that. I think Vorpal Blade is close (slightly more damage and an extra +22 to hit) but Songmaster has *Cold and an extra +3 Speed. Slayer gives +2 attacks but Songmaster counters with 9d8 vs. Evil and +30 to damage. Close again.

But surely Deathwreaker is much better. Versus an evil opponent, Deathwreaker is 14d8 with +28 damage, while Songmaster is a pitiful 10.8d8 with +30 damage ... Not even close ;-) (I am kidding of course, that is very close!)

Yeah, I guess you could argue that Songmaster is the best ... There are a few contenders though (Did I miss any?). The +5 Speed and Cold Immunity tend to throw the argument towards Songmaster, but its too bad the stat boosts are to Int and Chr ...

Hm... but there's more to a weapon than pure damage, at least usually when I play... Stormbringer has +2 STR/CON and also 3 useful resists... and then of course there's the Stick of the Halfheart, with it's insane 1D77 damage with just about every slay.

On 25.11.2005 04:54 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Well, ok. I agree that that Stick of Half-heart is the best weapon, but I was thinking of other than that one.

Deathwreaker? It does more sheer damage (81 damage/blow vs evil instead of 75 damage/blow for Songmaster), but Songmaster also has vorpal, which is worth another, what +4 damage or so? While ImmFire is certainly better than ImmCold, and Deathwreaker also adds some nice extra resists, IMO the combination of Songmaster's +5 speed and Deathwreaker's aggravate+no teleport make it an easy decision.

Vorpal blade is +22 to-hit over Songmaster, but it does quite a bit less damage/ blow against evil (62 vs 75), though that's before vorpal effects, and Songmaster has better side benefits as well. Stormbringer's +STR and +CON is nice, but it does a lot less damage than the other weapons, plus it aggravates.

Looking through the weapon list, I'll conceed that Grond is probably better as well. That 115 damage/blow vs evil is just amazing, and probably makes up for the weight, lack of vorpal and vampiric, and the various other minuses.

(clevel:46, dlevel:62) Accumulating scrolls of enchant to-him and to-dam in hopes of getting a scroll of artifact creation one day. Summon mold does not work in the Arena (counts as summoning, I suppose), so I'm thinking of going the archery route vs the Babble.

Mutations have taken a turn for the ugly. Grow Mold, Telepathy, steel skin, berserk, and spit acid (his best ranged attack, sadly enough) have been integral parts of Pokey's game, but Attract Dragons has started spitting out wyrms, which is bad, Hallucinatory insanity is striking much more often than I remember it going off with previous characters who had it, and he just picked up both puny AND albino.

Sigh. I think the good still outweighs the bad, but another bad one or two and it will be time to purge.

(clevel:48, dlevel: 76) Wow, level 76 is rough. No vaults, but Omarax, Hypnos, Ungoliant, Richard Wong, Y'Golonac, and Scylla are just hanging around in different parts of the map. Omarax is down, and Hypnos will hopefully soon join it, as Pokey needs his corpse, along with Ungoliant's.

On 26.11.2005 04:03 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Glaaki and Daoloth were there, too, it turned out, which was a real problem because Pokey's first look at Daoloth starting him hallucinating, and he kept hallucinating for quite a long time. Long enough for Richard Wong and Scylla to wake up and find Pokey while he rested. Scylla threw wave after wave of hydras at Pokey, while Wong summoned demons and kept stopping the time.

When down to ~350 hp, Pokey started teleporting away, but Wong stuck with him (I think, it was a little hard to tell with the hallucinations). Finally, I thought I had lost him, and started quaffing CCW potions to start getting hp back, when time suddenly stopped again and when it started, Pokey was dead.

On 26.11.2005 04:07 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Looking over the message log, I realized I left something out. Pokey was quaffing CCW potions when something attacked him. After it survived a couple rounds, I realized it might be worth worrying about, which was just about the moment it cried "Time!"

Thinking about, Pokey clearly shouldn't have blown most of his healing potions while fighting Omarax. Oh well.

Ouch! Damn Richard Wong! I swear, sometimes I risk having all of my stats go down to 3 against that bugger!

You probably are aware of all the following, but I'll mention just in case, with apologies if this is obvious. First is that Chaos resistance prevents hallucinations. The second is that if you must play without resist chaos, than Curing is a must. Stockpile potions or staves. Curing removes hallucinations! This last point is most important: Watch out for Hell Wyrms that Stop Time ;-)

But congratulations on getting a tourist very far! What do you think? Is this class winnable?

I don't think Chaos resistance stops hallucinations brough on by Eldrich Horror, though, and that's what he was suffering from. If rChaos actually does block them and I somehow failed to realize that, then in the future I'm going to bump up rChaos a notch or two (though its pretty high already). rChaos is actually why he was hauling around that blade of chaos of slaying as a swap weapon.

As for curing, yeah, that would have helped. I actually knew there were a couple potions of it on the level, but I only remembered generally where, and with the hallucinations I couldn't find them again. Actually stockpiling them is something I generally don't do, but really should. Hallucinating from Eldrich Horror is often my biggest hurdle in the Cloning Pits, and bringing in 4 or 5 potions of curing (as well as having them on hand for later in the game) would go a long way.

Winning with a Tourist is absolutely doable once you get to that stage of the game. Even if he didn't have Songmaster, he could have roughly matched his current damage output by using the aforementioned blade of chaos and Boromir. The hard part is getting through the early and middle game. You're stuck at 4 attacks, have crappy stats and a spellbook full of mediocre detection and resistance spells. A Tourist character with a powerful race (Beastmam or Balrog or something) to help him/her through the early levels, is tough but definitely doable.

Chaos resistance I think does prevent hallucination from Eldritch horror/sanity blast/whatever that is. Usually in the late game, the worst problem from sanity blasts is the "moron" mutation :(

But if you must go without chaos resistance, staff of Curing is often what I have to cure hallucination. I rarely venture into the Cloning Pits without chaos resistance...although some might try it to see what mutations they get :)

With any SP using chass that cant use antimagic you had to walkaround without telepathy and even then it was -> ZUL all the time.

Hmm looks like you already did die lol
