Well, I basically died to a teleport trap. Well, that, and lack of any decent stores or equipment. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the main part of the game is played as stairscumming. I stairscummed (more or less) for levels 4-16 or so, which I don't particularly enjoy. I know, I know... I shoudl play a race that is weak and thus starts our in a weak area. Well, that doesn't float my boat either, so pbbbt. The concept is certainly interesting, but I'm not so sure I like how it works out in the end.

Teleport traps in the wilderness? Honestly, that sounds a little strange. Who would bother to make such a thing?

Also, the lack of a decent town, along with having no starting gear to speak of (some races seem to have ego weapons, others normal), makes the early game (all I've played) tedious at best. Perhaps I'm missing out on an interesting game by not trying this out more, but I think I'll be shelfing it for a little bit at least.

Yes, there may be some balance work to be done. Druedain are the only one of the really hard races to get just an ordinary weapon - I figured telepathy would balance that out, but it makes them very hard to start. Agree about the town; I'm planning a complete revamp of stores, which will include making the small towns a bit more useful. And I'm undecided about the teleport traps in wilderness; they can kill, but they can also be useful, and kind of fun (or maybe that's just me).

Thanks for your comments; I hope you'll try a later version and see what you think then.

I tried this game as a warrior. Big mistake.

What's the closest FA Angband to a NPP Kobold Rogue? (Super stealth, good detection, fast advancing, preferably good with bows. Some kind of Assassin?)

And how do you find an actual dungeon to explore? I really, really hate wilderness ... spending all those resources just getting away from novice paladins and Crows just doesn't do it for me. It is just a huge pain to pick your fights carefully.

(Walking along the edges helps some, since there are only 1/2 as many monsters in detection range.)

Pete,

Rogue or Assassin, and Green Elf, Dark Elf or Hobbit. Experience per level is the same for all races and classes (as in O), and diving is more or less suicidal (also like O). A lot of the assumptions that work in V and NPP don't work here.
If you don't like wilderness, the news is probably bad - I'm trying to make wilderness an integral part of the game.
The first dungeon is Amon Rudh (see the map in the help), and it's shallowest level is 16.
Hope this helps, and thanks for the feedback.

Nick.
