Levelling up a bit first can help - although it's easy to die. This character gets a bonus to hit for being in a forest (like the level immediately north), and can improve combat further using Bless. Going north, finding a path back to town, finding something fairly easy then killing it and running back to town will get you a few levels fairly quickly.

If you enter a wilderness level at night, _all_ the monsters will be asleep. You will always enter the level on a floor grid, and there will be a paths of floor grids connecting all the paths off, so following the floor grids south is a good strategy.

And yes, being lucky helps. Expect to use up a few characters getting one started.
