good bye Mim! a !ofSpeed and a !ofHealing is what you are worth you loser.
Actually he was a piece of cake compared to Leon Marrick, who forced me to quaff quite a bit more potions and had me around 100hp more than one time.
By the way, for some weird reason Leon Marrick doesn't appear on the killed uniques list (using ~)
He does appear amongst my notes as you can see.
Neither of the losers dropped anything valuable, but i cant complain of my luck, since i found this really cool sword (see invis, free action, resists and decent enough damage for now) early on (900' i think) and also a perma light source with illumination (couldnt *id yet). Not to mention finding 10+ healing pots at the BM 3 times.
This is my first serious attempt with this variant (I played another Warrior until lev10 with the first version) and i really enjoy it. It adds really nice twists to Oangband, which is already a decent variant to begin with.
I will probably move to the next dungeon now, and scum stat gain a bit.

Only the standard uniques appear in the ~ list, but 'player' ghosts (from bones files) appear in the notes.

There are actually 3 dungeons that start at the level 30, so you can aim for any or all of them.

It was a looong way to Nargothrond and took quite a bit of supplies. Fighting on open ground is not fun for a warrior. Even usually harmless packs, like low level hounds can pose a deadly threat.
Either way, I am there now, but stat gaining is not going well at all. Auto-scum actually makes it harder now, undead pits and such are no joke.
I lack speed, confusion and blindness resist so I dare not descend any deeper now, and i am not making much progress at my currenth depth. Guess it is about time for something very lucky to happen.

oh, actually, i do have blindness resist (racial bonus). but anyhow, confusion is the big threat.

I'm running a warrior and a rogue at the moment, and the wilderness is so much easier for the rogue with detect monsters (although it still misses clear hounds).
Confusion is a real killer (don't even go NEAR a hummerhorn without RConf).

Good luck!

Frustrated!
I cleaned a vault carefully which was guarded by Eol and friends (it is not fun if you dont have +speed), and before i could grab most of the treasure i accidentally stepped on a trap and was teleported out of the level. Still i got this artifact armor that i cant *id* yet (maybe i will BM scum for a scroll) as well as another one sitting in my house. I hope that at least one of them gives res confusion...or maybe poison...and +10 speed...

btw, what is up with stat potions? i have spent quite some time below 30' and all i have found was a few !of Charisma

Stat potions are rare at 30, then more common at 40. I found quite a few between 40 and 45 with Ara.

coming home after clearing an elemental war special level. a painful chunk of my utility gear was destroyed (among them 3 scrolls of *id* that i found on the special level, and which i need _badly_), but the reward was rather nice. a big chunk of xp for the ancient Ds, a cloak of aman and quite a few stat pots. poison res doesnt show on the dump yet because i cant *id* the cloak but a !of self knowledge revealed it, and i am quite happy about it. with some more speed i could start diving seriously now. That Doriath weapon really is a blessing, been carrying it since early game.

and finally i can activate my shield for complete elemental immunity. also that first little +1 speed is there...lets hope that there is plenty more to come.

Gillette has done quite a lot today. Pounded a greater titan in melee at lev41 having a natural speed of +1 (of course he used a potion), cut the throat of some OoD uniques (good bye Adunaphel), cleared some vaults, and also a U and a D pit. (U pits at this depth are cool. very rewarding and not risky at all if you are careful)
but of all his achivements the one that leaves me the most satisfied is finding boots of speed! Only +4 but still...speed! finally. lets dive now...Morgoth I am cooming!

minor update after clearing a few more vaults and pits. I wonder what is really cool about that artifact staff Kevlar (other than recharge not eating it up, just draining it dry on failure). All it seems to do is magic map and detect. (that would be cool if it was a rod not a staff...)

Yes, that's it - but it maps possibly several regions, and detects traps on the whole level.

coming home from an insane level with 1 smal but very packed and 2 medium size vaults. It featured 5 uniques at least. Adunaphel and Thuringwethil has been slain, but a pack of time hounds rendered me weak enough that i couldnt beat Calcollo Greencloak (he is nasty!), and thanks to him Evil Iggy and Draugluin got away as well. There must have been more treasure, but i really had to teleport level in the end.
Still i got some new options...
I could use the serenity helm and robe of permamence to gain sustain all, more poison resist and most importantly hold life (it really sucks without it at my depth). but i would have to give up res shard and telepathy...i think i would die without the latter very soon, but i am not sure. too bad all my sources of resconf except for that helm are armors...i could even use a ring of res conf now.

rest in peace Gillette.

wooo. wait. it is not "a serpent of chaos" , it is The Serpent of Chaos. I figure it is named after the boss of Zangband and it was 15 levels OoD. how evil of you RNG to throw him at me when i was convinced the vault was clean. prolly should have seen him with telepathy...my eyes were a little too fixed on the findings.

No, actually just a serpent of chaos, but no more pleasant because of that.
In my experience, O (and hence FA, because they are almost the same deep in the dungeon) is the most consistently hard variant. You're still a chance to die at any moment, and not just from uniques. If you look at the O ladder, there are as many dead at level 50 as winners, which is a bit scary.
Compare equipment with my best O character, BTW - remarkably similar...

indeed, very hard. after beating Steam (which is supposed to be difficult) with a dashing hussar, i started to feel rather confident with warrior types, but looks like O introduces my fighters to a whole new level of challange. I really adore O's melee changes, finally i have a good reason to use big bashy weapons instead of pocket knives. I think i will give the new O release a shot now, than try something different in FA.
