Unfortunately I cannot afford both a whip and WOR, so I will take the first quest, go back using stairs and then buy WOR and dive for good. Perhaps I will then take quests whenever I return to town while diving.

Characters with 2 skills have problems with the practice penalities. All the time I have excess XP, unless I keep pounding on jellies and then waiting for them to regenerate...

Somehow I think it's the latter. I'd suggest grabbing saving throw. You'll have excess xp, and you'll really want it in the later game.

You might also want some disarming. It's obnoxious to have to deal with traps on chests and greater vaults without some disarming.

Also, 3 attacks at 1d5 (3d5) is not as good as you can do with a bigger weapon with 2 attacks (2x2d6, say). Of course, you generally can't afford anything more than a whip in your first go down.

A bigger problem are the practice penalties that hinder advancement with 2 skills... If I had any immediately useful non-practice skill to raise, it would all start making sense... Perhaps a little of Saving Throw and Disarming, just as you say? But it is such fun when it says:

You fumble with the lock, getting nowhere.

And then you apply a simple solution:

WHAM! You smash into the door!
The door crashes open!

If you have excess xp anyway...might as well spend it. You could always buck against the xp curve, but that just gets nasty.

This is a wonderful variant.

Finally I managed to kill him, but my CCW are finished and I almost kill the huge escort using the remaining potions of Slowness, but the three remaining Large kobolds switch places and one of them gets me...

Tough luck... Next time I will play Clubs+Throw+Save+Disarm with only the first quest. Most of my early XP comes from pseudoidentify, so by diving I have a chace to overcome the practice penalites, indeed.

I will most after I actually get somewhere (like level 7, or 10, if I'm lucky;). Cheers!
