Orangebeard has had a luckier time of it.
Got a Holy Avengenging Broad Axe from a forest troll which I was able to sell for 10,000 which made leveling up a lot more relaxed. Still, no shield drop yet and I would like a few more teleportation scrolls before I mosey South.

I've made it to Taur-Im-Duinath town! The surrounding area is very tame. I have a recall point to the wilderness where the Amon Rudh dungeon is supposed to be, but I didn't get a chance to actually step into the dungeon. I've set Taur-Im-Duinath as my current home, but my current plans are to forge on to Belegost so I can have a big town as a base of operations.

Excellent. Hope you fare better than Idril.

The staff stacking is an O thing - wands and rods are small and stackable, staves are bulky and not stackable. Vanilla (3.0.4 or 3.0.5) changed from no stcking to everything stacking; I think the O way is a reasonable compromise. But that's not to say I wouldn't change it given a good enough reason.

Thanks for the info, figured it was something like that. I don't mind at all, but then again I play characters who rarely tote around staves anyway.

Currently at Amon Rudh 17 and so far so good. It's quite comforting to be surrounded by dungeon walls... I think my characters have Agoraphobia, hee hee.

I just realized that I have been teleported by traps, but not by a monster yet. Just recently I was surrounded by Blink Dogs and I'm used to them bouncing me all around in Vanilla. This another one of those Oangbandisms or FAangbandisms?

Yep. There are plenty of monsters that do blink you (in fact, I recently lost an O character to phase spiders), but blink dogs only blink themselves toward and away.

Tengus, on the other hand, are a real pain for advanced races who don't want to leave the path to town...

Killed Mim and now I get to learn a new Specialty. I'm going to sleep on it, but I'm thinking I'll choose either shield mastery or fast attacking.
The fight with Mim wasn't so bad since I've had fortunate Black Market visits. Two times the BM had 10+ speed potions for sale and one time had 9 healing potions for sale. Luckily I had enough money to buy 'em all.
Also got lucky with Mim's disenchant... he didn't drain my sword, but my armour took some minor pain as did my longbow. I couldn't remember if Mim summoned other creatures so I made a hidey-hole with my wand of stone-to-mud. I needed two healing potions during the fight.
I guess I'm going to hang out at the bottom of this dungeon and cut some stuff up until I can find blind resistance and confusion resistance. At least in another CL I get resist fear for free.

Uh, thanks... you jinxer. :)
Yeah, about my equipment being better, I probably took a lot more turns to get where I'm at than you did. I cleared out level 25 around 15 times looking for res. Blind and Confu. My usual M.O. is to clear a level once and move on, but without basic resistances I find myself playing like the borg! I went to check how many game turns I've used up but couldn't find it anywhere. If it makes you feel any better I got the Borobab blues too when I saw Agha III make it to Belegost. I almost made a Druadan right then and there, but decided this game was hard enough that I'd probably die soon anyways.

I came across a weird level in Amon one of the 15 times I cleared lvl 25. It started with a quote... Something about "Proud warriors do battle here, and that nobody here is neutral." Or something similar to that. The area looked wooded, with little buildings thrown about here and there. It obviously was some kind of special level and I really really really really wanted to get inside one of those buildings but couldn't since I kept getting blinded and stuck out in the open.

Borobab, too, met that one. He was surrounded by Gaveronians and fled after 2 turns or so...
According to the game turn number is seen in Show Scores, Borobab has spent a bit over million turns. Surprisingly enough, Mengha is deeper than he is with only 320000 turns...

Found a cool nifty. Once you defeat Mim and go back to level 30 in Amon there are down staircases... if you take them you go to Nowhere town! Nowhere town is cool because no matter where you step you run into a wall and your invisible... presumably @ is stuck in a wall. Not to fear, because you can still use word of recall to get back to your home town. Once back to home town your word of recall won't work until you teleport back into home from the wilderness. If you made a recall point in Nowhere town it just says nowhere on your recall list as if you've never been there... presumably because it doesn't exist! I think this is cool! :)

Is the Nowhere town possibly related to the place I found (when one tries tele_level to wilderness or from wilderness to city?) Aparts from that a movement there caused the game (and the comp) to crash :(

Great. Leave you guys alone with my game for a couple of days, and now it's full of bugs.

I'm not surprised about the teleport level one; I knew there were serious problems with that, and they are (I think) now fixed for the next version. The down staircase from Amon Rudh 30 really shouldn't happen; given it did, though, Nowhere is the right place to go :) I'll try to get that fixed for the next version, which shouldn't be too long - just got some prettying up of the character dump and some other interface stuff to do.

The special level you saw is a themed level; another O thing. There are six, and they can appear a maximum of once per game.

As for Agha III, she died horribly after meeting a fellow druid who summoned vast numbers of spiders and ants. Lesson: never go into wilderness without a source of teleport.

Finally found a source of resist Blindness at level 44 of Nan Dungortheb. It's attached to my Broad Axe of Ginya which also gives me slay demon, +3 to speed, resistance to acid and resistance to fire. I'm glad I held on to my ring of see invisible, because now I need it. I lose an attack per round but my damage output is still pretty good with the increased damage die and att/hit bonuses.

Confusion resist (If I remember correctly from Angband, and if it hasn't been changed in FA ) from Thalkettoth, and definitely resist blindness plus telepathy from Mablung. My kit has been reshuffled to give more damage, and am passing on wearing the str + 3 ring to give 5 attacks a round and instead using the deadliness +15 ring at 4 attacks a round with Quarterstaff of Noldor. Waldern King of Water got away, and nearly killed me even with 90 resist Acid, but was able to kill lord of the gadavordians or some suchness, I can't check my ~ files at work but will post his name later when I get home.

The last few levels have been ridiculously kind. I cleaned house on the Elemental Themed Level. Smaug has been smote, among tons of lesser dragons, a few mature dragons and one Great Ice Wyrm. The best loot was a set of sandals +8 to speed and an artifact shield that weighs 33.2 pounds which will put the whomp on some baddies if I can grab the shield bashing specialty.
There were scads of stat gain potions so now I'm well on my way to maxing stats. The elemental level was about 2 hours of good fun. Not having monsters respawn is a slice of heaven.

Dropped from 47 to 63 in Nan Dungortheb quickkly and the monsters are still not much of a challenge. Took some time in the wilderness to set recall points in Nargathrond and Tol-In-Gaurhoth. Shamelessly exploited the fairly common continuos stairs to quickly drop to levels 62 and 60 in those dungeons hoping to come across a dungeon guardian. Also grabbed up some new artifacts, and hoping I can get some *ID* scrolls soon so I can figure out what my chain mail Rhothaur does ( I wonder if it is chain mail of arvedui renamed ) and what Long Bows of Ossiriand do. I've found 2, both of which had +0 to whatever it is that they effect.

Aw, you'll get there. Priests have a harder time of it I'm sure, but then again if it wasn't a muscle brained idiot I wouldn't know how to play it. I'm not using Randarts, because I've found Thalkettoth, so I guess that means the game has a chance for random artifacts to be created.

*ID* is too rare (IMO in O as well); I'll fix that. Looks like Bows of Ossiriand are broken somehow - they're supposed to be just like Bows of Lothlorien in vanilla, but +0 is bad.

The randarts are an O thing - you always get some, and there's no option to randomize them all.

With four big dungeons, I think Orangebeard's fast-diving style is going to be fairly common. So I guess that makes the continuous stairs a good thing.

Thinking of heading to Angband any time soon?

Nah, I wasn't heading to Angband till I cleared out the three dungeons, but if you want me to mosey over there and check it out I will right away, just lemme know.

I've come across a fair number of *Id* scrolls in the dungeon, mainly around 40 and deeper. I've yet to see one in the Black Market, however.

I had just taken out a Great Wyrm of Law, some Great Ice Wyrms and 2 Dracoliches. A fitting death for so much luck I was getting.

Oh yeah, when I started playing I noticed my Long Bow of Ossirand was +1 and it effected my Dexterity like a Lothlorien bow would in Angband. I dunno when the +1 happened,... ? Maybe it's because I found the bow while I was playing on the computers at work. For some reason I can't use the ~ functions at work like checking Artifacts and Uniques... it has something to do with 'writing notes to a file' or something... I have no idea but maybe it's not the code's fault at all. When Lahtonen finds Ossirand Bow I bet it has normal value.
