Ah, second try came along much better. Eorlingas was found in Mimic's Treasure Quest, and Arvedui was just now found in Dark Elven Lords. Quest for Q was damn annoying, but finally managed to kill him (was afraid I'd have to abandon due to lack of food and SeeInvis).

Progress is grinding to a halt as I start the evil evil stat-gain part of the game. The fight on dlvl 24 against Alberich disenchanted Eorlingas and Arvedui somewhat, but they're still in decent shape. Note that I actually bought Staves of Speed from BM this time! ^^

*Groan* Going really slowly now. Only found 1 stat potion so far in Castle, which turned out to be DEX (which I am already near max, having a self-cap of 18/70). Went and did Killing Fields for 3 character levels and then abandoned when the Warriors of the Dawn got exhausted. Hm, what to do now?

Finally bit the bullet and changed realms when I found the 3rd Nature Book. I started with Death and kept it there for Resist Poison, but I stupidly studied some other spells early on for the xp of casting it the first time. Gyah. I'll be pissed if I end up running out of spell slots.

Cloning Pits went very easily, despite the relatively sucky Stealth (Very Good), thanks mostly to the toughest of the random monsters being only an Olog. Found lots and lots of 3rd level books, and even a 4th level book (Five Aces), so now I can switch schools more freely if necessary.

Something swapped my stats, and now I'm stuck with really low DEX (though, I coulda sworn I had RNexus from Arvedui or Shiva's shoes at all times). On the flip side, Barney breathed chaos on me, and gave me +4 CON! Awesome!!

Brian, if you're reading, the Warrior-Mage is probably the single class that needs the biggest change. Why? Because my first character in Heng, before I had any idea what I was doing, was a Warrior-Mage, just like a bunch of other folks. Yet, I've probably played just 1 since then. Why? It all comes down to 2 reasons: #1 - Arcane magic is by far the worst school in game and Warrior-Mages get it as their primary school, and #2 - there isn't a reason to play a Warrior-Mage over a Ranger. I mean, sure, Warrior-Mages can indeed get all the spells in their 2nd school, something Rangers can't do, but that's FAR more than outweighed by: A) its their 2nd school, so their fail rates with those level 50 spells are never going to be any good, B) Ranger's have Nature as their primary school, one of the best 2 or 3 schools, and C) Rangers have the kick-ass backup offensive option of being the 2nd best archers after actual Archers. Rangers are just as good in melee, FAR better with missle weapons, and solidly better (IMO) with spells. What's not to like?

IMO, you should make Warrior-Mage's primary school Sorcery, not Arcane (or totally revamp Arcane to make it useful, but simply switching it is probably easier), and then make them a bit more useful in melee. I mean, c'mon. WARRIOR-Mage, right?

Very good points, Elliot. As a further strike against Warrior-Mages, the Old Castle Reward is the Charmed Pendant (which, honestly, pretty much sucks), whereas Rangers get Bard. Possibly upgrade the reward to a new non-weapon artifact with +STR and +INT?

The only nice thing I discovered about Warrior-Mage that I didn't really fully utilize the first time around is Convert SP to HP, which heals clvl HP for clvl/5 SP, making it possible for Warrior-Mages decent healers without having to take Life school. Still, this is a bit weak though, because usually one can just quaff !oCCW for similar effect. Possibly upgrade to clvl*2 HP for clvl/3 SP?

Honestly, I think if you implement the two changes I proposed (improving Convert SP to HP and improving Old Castle reward), Warrior-Mages will be a quite competitive class. Even with the slightly gimpy Convert SP to HP, I'm still pulling a lot of mileage with Phase Door + Convert combos and killing monsters by attrition.

Don't forget, Rangers cannot pick Life, Craft or Crusade as realms, while the Warrior-Mage can. Just being able to pick Life or Craft are 2 reasons I would play a Warrior-Mage and not play a Ranger. Life Healing beats Nature's herbal healing hands down in my book (66% better fail rate and nearly half the cost). Craft requires no comment :)

But Rangers are a stronger class, I agree. They actually fight better then the Warrior-Mage and shoot much much better. Nature kicks butt , too.

I would hope we keep the class, but perhaps Dave's changes would be good as well.

Hit Clvl 45 off a Great Storm Wyrm pit in Dragon's Lair, and found a good number of artifacts. Practiced Wall of Stone and Poison Needle until those got up to par. GWoP kindly fell to the first Poison Needle swing, but the Babble was much harder than expected:

I went in with +24 Speed and about 850 HP (traded out RoDisenchant for RoConstitution, RoDamage for RoSpeed (only +3 *cringe, but better than nothing!)). Cast Resistance and detect monster before I break open a wall, and was able to do pretty well... until I failed Wall of Stone 3 times in a row... Babble blinked into LoS the second time, and started Psycho-Spear + Breath Logrus. At about 100 HP, I knew that move could easily be my last.. options were 30% Fail Wall of Stone,, 3% Fail Phase Door/Teleport, 41% Fail Herbal Healing, or taking a step *towards* the Babble and hoping its paranoid AI triggers, and it blinks out of LoS for a turn.

After a lot of thought, I elected to go with the last option, and VERY fortunately the AI obliged, so then I was able to Wall the next turn with little risk.

Artifacted the Diamond Edge on Ryleh 80, results are in screenshot. Probably 6 or 7 out of 10 on a 10 point scale, but dammit! I was really really looking forward to Force-Brand with a 7D5 weapon and tons of SP! Argh...

If I had known from the start it would take that much resources, I probably would have said screw the ring and go for Chemist/Unicorn. The battle went to 6 stars fairly quickly, using only 3 !o*Healing*. But then Archliches and Reavers got summoned, so I Phase Doored and tried to Mass Geno. It took a couple tries, but I managed to get most of the dangerous ones. Then, stupidly, I figured I'd save on potions and rest to restore my mana instead of quaffing a potion. When I get back... Ring was back at 8 stars.

And then it KEPT on alternating healing itself at 2/3 stars and Mana Storming.

Gyah, that was really not pleasant. Now I need to scum for another 20 *Healing* if I want to take on Chemist.
