I should have kept up the scumming...that's the price I pay for pressing my luck. At least I had the foresight to back up the save just before descending to dlv12--hopefully I can kill Saruman with this "dishonorable" character, if only to learn how to best go about fighting him next time I'm down there for real.

Also, the only speed-giving items I found throughout the game were amulets of trickery, which unfortunately didn't give resDark. A good =oSpeed (or Cubragol, or boots of speed) were almost required. +20 speed monsters are not to be toyed with.

Of course, I realized all this in bed, just after my mage was finished off. On the brighter side, with my Amulet of the Magi equipped, I was only 2 points away from 18/200 and 0% fail rate. With some more time, that might have been attainable...

So off I go to try again.

I considered the Hammerhand/Trickery combo, and I almost went with it-- but unfortunately I'd be without resFire, and Saruman's fire storms would be far more unpleasant. (Granted, I was already being reckless by going down there in this condition, but anyway...)

As for spells, I dug a long corridor with Stone to Mud and then shot the big A and his minions with Rift and my wands of Drain Life. Haste Self and Resistance were put to good use, but Shield didn't really matter. I also teleported away a couple of uniques, but unfortunately not the Balrog.
