1) You can't extract the essences from there. Essences must be found in the dungeon. They are created along with some monsters and items. You need a wizardry of 15 to find essences at all, and a high wiz. and percep. help a lot.

2) The damage you deal is proportional to the base damage of the weapon. You might want to start making beefier weapons like long swords, bastard swords, and 2-handed swords.

3) Once you have essences, you will be able to tailor your items to a degree . It's not guaranteed, but it's a start. Perhaps try to craft something with hold_life, eh?

4) You might as well sell the potions of essences, or throw them like grenades.

5) Wrestling and Karate deal a *ton* of damage, and increase your str and dex occassionally. They make great early to mid-game skills before you reach statgain and get good weapons.
