First time playing Angband in quite some time, trying the new features in OAngband. I've only had one close call so far, when ants got summoned out of nowhere and they destroyed my scroll of teleportation.

Mostly doing damage through traps, for example, setting a trap behind you and moving two spaces back is better than hitting the opponent with a melee weapon. In addition you can stand in a corridor and put two traps before you and that kills most people. Other than traps, I'm making heavy use of my sling, and throw Dethanc, which does tons of damage, when I'm reasonably certain I'm not in danger of losing it.

When ants get summoned, beastmasters are usually the culprit. Look for the yellow 'p'. The reason your melee sucks is the morning star you're wielding being too heavy for you class. Rogues get attack bonuses for lighter weapons and penalties for heavier ones.

Even though a 2d9 Morning Star is a nice find, I'd still sell it and wield Dethanc. You can use it's activation lightning bolt to compensate a bit for firepower.

Actually, I seem to have the same skill with the Morning Star as with Dethanc (both "Very Good".) Since the Morning Star is 2d9 (avg 10) and Dethanc is 1d5 * 1.7 (avg 5.1) I've decided to continue wielding the Morning Star.

Only problem right now is that I'm unsure of how to attack, I'm relying alot on my traps since I can't survive in close melee and my sling doesn't really do enough damage.

ThereĀ“s a weight cap level based to each class. An invisible to hit bonus is added to assassins and rogues if the weapon is below this weight, lighter = bigger bonus. And there is an invisible penalty to all classes that wield heavier weapons than the cap.
I think this bonus/penalty should be shown on screen...
I had similar problems playing elf ranger before.... till you find good dice ammo and good launcher, youll have to run a lot.
BTW, just trying O rogue too ;)

Hmm, even if it's invisible shouldn't it show up on the first screen after "Fighting:" in terms of very good, excellent, etc. even if the actual to-hit bonus does not appear?

Anyway, it's irrelevant since I found this nice defender weapon and did a big equipment overhaul, now I can change my rings of FA and SI to more useful ones and my heavy armor of resistance to Thalkettoth. Char is much stronger now after just a few finds due to benevolence of RNG.

Char is dead now (didn't get the dump). She was at dlv41 and decided to take on "Leon Marrick, the Vampire." He obligingly teleports in, I make a trap for him, he blinds me, then when I use CCW he wipes me out with a 2 spell combo.

Moral 1: Don't pick fights when you're already at a too-deep level.
Moral 2: When you're blinded and in a possibly dangerous situation, drink your !oSpeed before your !oCCW.

But then again, I kinda wasn't expecting the guy to be that badass. But apparently he was a mage type of player ghost and so was pretty deadly.
