Just getting back into *bands after not having played them much since around vanilla 3.0.6. Never played much O back in the day either. So, taking it slow and carefully.

Found a ring of Free Action at 1000 feet - feel a lot more comfortable heading downwards now that I have that.

Oh, and Phial of Galadriel, I almost missed - I didn't have enough money to get Word of Recall both way, so was diving down through the dungeon, got a fairly boring feeling at 100 ft, and was just about to head down the stairs when I saw it lying on the floor in the room just beyond the stairs.

Found my first vault at 1000', which yielded 2 or 3 artifacts (Totila, Argonnath, Pauraegen - have only seen a single scroll of *identify* all game so far, which I used on Argonnath. Wielding Totila regardless, as even without bonuses, it does more average damage than my previous weapon. Waiting on the gauntlets, as they impede spellcasting, so not wearing them until I know if they give something worthwhile. I think they might not have come from the vault, but from a random unique on the same level.).

Also, were three side rooms I couldn't get into, as I had no way through granite. Going to have to start carrying a pick, I guess, as it seems Rogues don't get stone-to-mud in O?

(And as I'm not really caring about the turn count - I'm in the Comp to participate, not trying to end at the top - I town scummed a bit hoping for an *identify* scroll, but no such luck - ended up spending my money on a ring of deadliness instead.)

Dead, killed by a to me previously unknown monster (Serpent of the Brownlands). Had just got my first stat potions. This was probably my go at this save file - I like variety too much to give same variant / race / class another go.

Felt like this character's worst problem was lack of resist blindness - anytime Ibdun I got into trouble, it was almost always due to being blinded. Lots of more monsters causing blindness than what I remembered (or has O made it more common?).

Monster AI loves to blind and confuse you and there are several monsters that chain blind you (black scorpions, nrulings, those serpents). If you get tired of O's cruelty, try FAangband in "angband mode", it's like O but not as barren.

On 27.2.2017 01:30 unic wrote:
Yeah, both Black Scorpions and Nrulings had already gone on my list as monsters better avoided. But first time encountering a new monster, it's easy to get surprised.

FAAngband is on my list of variants to try, but next up is either sCth or whatever the next comp ends up being.
