Cauchy the French Engineer was promising; I camped him out next to a Luminary Terminal and got bonus AC, Schooling, and Ego from mutations. The Knave of Hearts killed him. All my other characters died like dogs. Troglodyte Beastlords, trapped without free action by Baobhan Sith, instagibbed by the Black Dwarf, even a few chickens.

So I played Leibniz more carefully, staying close to town until I had free action. Slowly built my best set of equipment yet, got up to +15 speed (+25 with the Fogg gloves activated), big AC, etc. I was really worried about resists. In the end, it didn't matter.

I was digging through level 20, looking for the Quest chest. Something was mangling the terrain; I had to stone-to-mud my way through. Suddenly the Prince of Air and an automaton I'd never seen zapped in next to me. I opened fire with Forward Cannons on the elemental. So the Etheric Dimensional Phase Automaton crushed me flatter than hammered shit with two missiles in a row. Boo to that.
