Okay, I had worse things also chasing at me (Nighthawk and some invisible creatures that wouldn't let me run away) and everytime I tried to phse door out of there I just got stuck in another group of monsters. I hear that Munzy III is ready to adventure. :-D

Dunedain are basically humans on steroids (they start out with higher stats) and have their Constitution sustained. High-Elves have See-Invisible intrinsically, so next time you'd be able to see those pesky invisible creatures.

Also, Warriors tend to be easier to start with, especially for the early game. Lately, I've been playing Mages, which are really hard to start out, but once I've gotten them going, they seem to last through at least 2000'. (I'm relatively new to Angband too... so I haven't gotten the chance to take my Mages any deeper than that... hehe :)

I like the balance of fighting/magic of the ranger because I use the heck out of detect monster and detect traps/stairs/doors. I tried for a while with the mage and while it was nice to gain the spells sooner I ended up in melee so often (my type of play I guess) that Ranger just makes more sense. As far as different races - I liked High Elf and Dun but didn't like that they have an experience penalty. My current Human Ranger, Munzy VIII - http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=3783 , has rings of See Invis and Infravision. :)
