This is my first character to get past the first few levels. I've been keeping a running log that I hope to upload later.

Angband 3.0.5 - Gnome Mage Nunu XVI: Episodes I-VIII

9/21/2004 AM - I am Level 12 at 250'... both Lagduf and Wormtongue
are present on this level.

9/21/2004 PM - I just killed Lugdaf the Snaga. He dropped:
a Tulwar (2d4) (+4, +2)
Leather Scale Mail (-1) [11, +3]

Many of his orcs have been spread out, but a blue worm mass has taken over the room Lugdaf started from which I suspect has a couple good items in. There is also a room full of clear worm mass just south of Lugdaf's room, unfortunately they are poison resistant and I don't know how to kill them all.

9/22/2004 AM - Right now I am working on leveling my Gnome Mage up so that I have enough SP to take out Wormtongue. I've been having a bit of a problem with him, as I run out of SP casting Fire Bolt by the time he is halfway dead. Also, Magic Missle hardly appears to damage him at all. I suppose if I could find a potion or scroll that regenerated my SP then I could take him out. I'm also going to try using different spells (Lightning Bolt, Stinking Cloud) to see how that works.

9/22/2004 PM - I decided to hold off on Wormtongue and took my lewt
back up to the town, dropped it off at my house (so
gold couldn't be stolen from me) and went back down.
I'm having real weight problems and need to find
something that ups my strength. I dived down another
level, to 300' (I'm level 14 now) and have found a
room that has a ton of monsters in it. I'm going to
level and then try to take them on.

9/23/2004 - I just beat Smeagol at 450'. He dropped:
-A Lead-Filled Mace of *Slay Troll* (3d4) (+1, +7)
(+2)
It increases your strength by 2. It slays trolls.
It speeds your regeneration. The only problem is that
even with the +2 to STR it's too heavy for me to
wield. If I can manage to hold onto it until I can up
my strength by 3 then I will be able to wield it, but
until then it's going in mothballs at my house. I'll
soon be needing to start acquiring the resistances.
After that comes the stat gaining. :)

9/24/2004 AM - I've just found the Phial of Galadrial at '500! My
first artifact ever! I got it off of Grishnakh. I'm
now level 20. I think I'm going to stick around '500
until no monsters cause me to retreat... but we'll see
how patient I am. I just have to keep reminding
myself... "slow and steady wins the race"... hehe. :)

9/24/2004 PM - I finally decided to dive another level, down to 550'. I picked up a couple decent magically enchanted items, and since it slowed me down so much I decided to head back to town. I want to keep diving so that I can start taking out the easier uniques, but I want to wait so that their drops will be better. I seem to keep running into Wormtongue and Broda right now. I am just slightly worried about how hard they will be if the surrounding monsters are more difficult also. If I have to teleport out of the battle... I could teleport into a worse place.

9/26/2004 - Well... I'm official addicted to Angband and my little
gnome mage Nunu XVI. I played for most of my free time
this weekend. He's now level 26 and I'm at 900'. I've
only got one artifact so far, the puny Phial of
Galadriel, but it's nice not having to worry about
light and food (satisfy hunger spell). I would have
died long ago if it weren't for that. My issue is that
my Word of Recall scroll got destroyed somehow, and so
I'm stuck down in the dungeon, too stubborn to lug all
my junk up almost 20 dungeon levels. I'm just hoping
to find a word of recall scoll somehow. If I get too
bored and get down to 1000', then I think I'll break
down and just take my most important lewt up with me.
I've found an armor of resistances, and so that
combined with my innate free action and helm that
protects me from light/blindness. The only problem is
it is rather heavy for my weak strength (8 with a +1
to STR ring), so it drops my... something a bit. I
know it drops my SP by 1 for now (from 50 to 49).
Anyway, I'm good to go down another couple hundred
feet, but I'm just playing it safe for now.

My side quest/goal right now is to hold off on killing
Wormtongue until at least 1000', hoping to get an
artifact, or at least an ego-item from him. *prays for
westernesse dagger or something*.

My mantra: "Slow and steady wins the race".

Use stinking cloud at low levels when magic missile isn't damaging enough.

You may want to hand around between 300' and 500' for a while killing lots of orcs. Keep only rings, amulets, wands and good/ego weapons which give good money to weight ratio. With enough money you can buy a ring of strength or intelligence if it comes up at the black market.

Buying a ring of protection would help your armour rating, then you could sell the shield which is a lot of excess weight.

Thanks for your input. :)

I've been going deeper because I've been able to handle it pretty easily. I've been using the "cast spells, teleport away, rest, return to fight" method and it seems to be working quite well. I changed my mind, picked up my stuff (I had a bunch stashed in a room on the level) and started heading back to the surface. At 800' I had a scare though. An Umber hulk kept confusing me while novice rangers surrounded and pounded on me. I almost ran out of mushrooms of cure confusion, and got all the way down to 3 HP, but got lucky with a "good hit" while confused to take him out. I then realized (idiotically) that I still had a ton of potions of CCW (and I'd even picked up one of healing) that I'd forgotten about. I quaffed a couple of them then took out the rest of the novice rangers. *phew!*

Anyway, I figure I shouldn't be seeing anymore Umber hulks as I ascend the dungeon, since they are native to the 800' level that I'm about to leave. Side note: I'm only about 2000 EXP away from level 27. :)

A couple questions: Does anyone know a good site that has a spoiler on what each of the spells actually do? I'm still rather noobish and clueless with regards to spells (and much of the game), especially since this is my first Gnome Mage character to make it past level 5. (Other side note: My previous best character was a level 12 Half-Elf warrior who dove too deep too fast and met an untimely demise, so that gives you an idea of how big a jump this character is for me.) Also, this site is nice for looking up artifacts, but I can't seem to find anywhere that talks about the ego-items, can anyone help me out there?

9/30/2004 AM - So my little gnome mage has been working his little way through the great big dungeon. I made it all the way down to 950' now, and I'm ALMOST level 27. I've also just found a hard leather cap of seeing, which give me the same stuff that my iron helm had but weighs less. As a result, my armor weighs less overall and my movement is unencumbered by it! So... score! I've got all my SP back! :).

9/30/2004 PM - I just leveled to 28, and found a Holy Avenger Lance... but it's a pity my puny gnome mage can't wield it. I've been getting so much stuff on my trips down to 950' that I haven't been able to bring myself to drop down another level with all the stuff, cause I know I would have to leave a bunch behind. We shall see what happens on my next time down.

Nothing huge going on. I've descended a couple levels deeper. Getting kinda bored at these levels. I want to just jump down to stat gain levels, but I know I need to take my time, as sometimes even at this point I have to watch myself to make sure I don't get into any hairy situations.

The only real thing of consequence that has happened since my last update was finding a potion of Charisma from a Ranger at 1000'. The message I recieved when quaffing was rather funny... hehe. I'm now level 28 at 1050'.

On 2.10.2004 21:19 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
I found a Robe of Resistance with a high bonus on it in the town so I sold my Leather Scale Mail of Resistance since the Robe is a LOT lighter and weight is at a premium. Now level 29 at 1050'. I've had a couple close calls at this level which almost turned into YASDs... but I managed to escape. Nunu XVI's got some tricks up his magician's sleeve yet... hehe. Anyway, that's discouraged me from diving further, even though I really need better drops.

Found a few more stat potions. 1 Charisma (that upped my Charisma by 2!), 1 Strength and 1 Dexterity (though the last 2 were found on the BM). I wish I could find a potion of Intelligence so I could get my spell fail rate down to 4%.

Time to try something else then.

Suggestions:
- hobbit warrior
- kobold paladin
- elf rogue
- half-troll ranger (18/50 str)
- hobbit priest (use a longbow!)
- half-orc mage (melee + spells)

On 2.2.2005 21:43 barlowguy18@yahoo.com wrote:
Thank you, those are excellent suggestions. I shall be trying those for my next characters. :)

Also, I want to try a Dwarf Mage... I know it's not recommended, but as of now I like mages better than priests, and the intrinsic res_blind is something I want to check out. :)

On 2.2.2005 22:04 urmud@urmud.com wrote:
In that case I'd strongly suggest half-orc mage.

- res_dark and a cap of light makes you safe from hound blindness

- high strength, decent hps

- enough int to cast spells properly

13 str and 18 int worked best for me
