Bah. Disturb options suck. Had to hold shift+dir to run anywhere at anywhere near a decent speed due to having so many spiders, and hence missed all the "you're hungry. you're gonna die" messages. The "Weak" right out of the way in the bottom left of the (bigscreen) window in a dark colour didn't help either...
